I have to make the comparison with the first fully ripe Madeira on my head. I remember it a little better than the subsequent bottling, but not clearly. Of course, €90 isn't a piece of cake, but it knows how to please!
Young Kilchoman aged in sweet casks is just a good combination. The smoke and sweetness complement each other perfectly. I don't know yet whether I'll buy the bottle again for €90. Before I tasted it, I was pretty sure that this 4-year-old malt would not actually be worth the price for me.
Admittedly, I'm no longer so sure. No off notes, no sharp alcohol, nothing metallic - of course no excessive complexity. Nevertheless, in my opinion it offers more than many 8-10 year old Islay whiskys with an applied finish that can be bought at a similar price.
So if you like smoke and sweet wine, you should try it here at least once.
    • Nose
      87 87
The Madeira is right in the nose! Coupled with the youthful, alcoholic freshness and the smoke, I'm quite taken with the first nose. The 50.0% Vol. are quite noticeable. The fruity sweetness covers the smoke at the beginning, but it knows how to assert itself.
Pickled, exotic fruits, a spicy sweetness and young pine needles. So far, the Madeira casks go well with this still young and wild malt!
    • Taste
      88 88
Here, too, the malt comes across as young and wild. However, the alcohol is better integrated than the nose would suggest. The 50% vol. is well chosen. Once again the fruity sweetness of the Madeira wine wins the race against the smoke and dominates the first impression. However, the smoke is by no means weak!
Juicy, slightly bitter oranges, pleasant spice, pickled peach, plum compote, raisin pickled in rum - accompanied by the classic cold Kilchoman smoke.
    • Finish
      87 87
Here the cold smoke dominates for the first time. The malt loses a bit of the juiciness it had at the beginning and becomes a bit dry. The finish is surprisingly long for 4 years, which the malt certainly owes mainly to the Madeira casks and its smokiness.

For the most part, I'm not a fan of Kilchomans. I find their flavours usually aren't quite as developed as they could be (too young) and the peat too ashy. I have, however, liked their 8+ year old malts. This one, I found to be a better than the average Kilchoman, so fans of Kilchoman may like it.

Mint leaves, peanut shells, blackberries, vanilla pods, latex gloves - all run over by a diesel truck. Plus, lacquered floors and a full ash tray.

Good but smoke overpowers anything else. Don't feel any Madeira influence
    • Nose
      85 85
Strong campfire ash smoke and peat, salt, quite oily, black pepper, slight creamy sweetness. Don't feel any fruits, peat is very prominent but pleasant
    • Taste

Punchy cigar ash smoke, oily, some herbs, sweet then very dry
    • Finish
      86 86
Long, salty, tobacco leaves, ash, wood

Heavy smoke with a kick of tobacco ashes. Also prunes and ripe pears beneath a blanket of balsamic vinegar. It is very much its own thing and not half bad.
    • Taste
      83 83
Punchy and raw from the neck pour. Initially it feels more like 60 % than 50 %. It is young and feisty with more ashes, some mint and lemon peel.

Much of it fades away quickly, but the ashes stay with you for a long time.

Delicious, unctuous, oily, coal/Creosote, soot,… savoury,… the madeira cask a perfectly behaved accompaniment. One dram of this per session is easily enough, but it’s one I’d certainly want to revisit. Great stuff, another Madeira-influenced winner. On a side note, if you haven’t tried Madeira, let alone a flight, what are you waiting for? It’s quite an insight.

A clear islay whisky that is young and sharp, masked by the higher alcohol percentage (50%), time and a few drops of water do this whisky a lot of good. A very neat whisky for 5 years and for the lovers of Kilchoman certainly worth the 89 euros.
    • Nose
      85 85
Just in the glass a medicinal smoke with a predominant alcohol smell. After 20 minutes caramel, grapes, dates.
    • Taste
      87 87
Tart, smoky, oak, distinctly young. opens after adding a few drops of water, cassis, caramel and grapes.
    • Finish
      86 86
Medium long finish, smoke and high alcohol aftertaste, slightly oily.

Kilchoman is the eighth active Islay Distillery since 2005. Soon there will be the first whiskys from Ardnahoe, then Kilchoman will be one of the established representatives of the island. Kilchoman has a wonderful Islay style with a strong smoke - but Kilchoman has not managed to build up a range of mature whiskys in more than 15 years. And so one special bottling appears after the other and none has matured. If there are older whiskys, they are utterly priceless. This whisky is also no more than five years old, but costs more than 90 euros, even though 17,000 bottles were filled. That's rude.

    • Nose
Smoky whiskys have an unbeatable advantage: the smoke overlays the young aromas and therefore these whiskys work without proper maturation. If you then add a strong wine cask to the finish, which captures and softens the stark smoky aromas of young whiskys, the result is a whisky that is easy to drink. Here, too, the smoke suggests complexity and the wine tones give sweet and mild fruitiness in the background.
    • Taste
This is Islay, wild smoke, strong alcohol. Despite the 50% vol. definitely water. The alcohol is fizzy and bitter, it needs to be appeased. This is also a sign that this whisky is not mature. The Madeira contributed a slightly sweet wine gum note that is nice but also has a metallic bitterness lurking underneath. The fruit aromas cannot develop, and probably have not developed at all. The smoke keeps the taste together, without it there would be little that makes this whisky stand out.
    • Finish
The whisky is five years old - where should an aftertaste come from? Of course the smoke stays - but where is the wood, where is the Madeira? Some sulfur also flashes through hidden, which is probably also covered by the smoke.

This whisky lives on the smoke. Other Islay whiskys do this too – they cost €35. This Kilchoman is a cheek, it's immature, it's wasting Madeira casks and it's massively overpriced. With such bottlings, Kilchoman unfortunately slides down on my list of favorite distilleries.

Hart met my expectations, but not exceeded now, nice smoky malt, whose youth flashes every now and then
    • Nose
I warmed the glass well in my hand and a nice gush of red fruit/berries hits you straight away, strawberries, cookie dough, a pinch of cinnamon, creamy, vinous, suddenly slightly tart green apple, oak, bread crust, not at all from the smoke so intense, malty, again bread, ash, sour, coffee, sometimes it still comes across as a little young and rough
    • Taste
Sweet, oily, clear smoke, strawberry, very sweet, chocolate, but dark, therefore also dry, cinnamon, even sweeter on the second sip, more fruit, now really tasty and intense, also a bit dirty, which I like
    • Finish
Malty, dry, dark, shisha charcoal, so when the tobacco is empty and you draw a little pure charcoal, always fruity on the palate, lasts a long time

It's better than the 82 points I get here, but I really find the nose so uncomfortable that I can't rate it higher overall. Without personal aversion, the 85 P is certainly good.
    But not on my shelf.

When pouring with a distance to the glass and sample bottle, first a pungent note of bacon, then unpleasantly overripe, overcooked vegetables in the glass. (Roughly toward Deanston.) Behind, cold smoker.
With more heat and time, fewer vegetables and more (smoked) fish.
    • Taste

At the end of last year, the Kilchoman Christmas Tasting took place (online), at which this Kilchoman Madeira Cask Matured was also tasted in addition to Kilchoman Machir Bay, Sanaig and the Club Release 2021. My brief conclusion was: "Very tasty! A few bottles should be stored there.” When the whisky slowly began to tumble into the German shops, I rubbed my eyes in amazement: around 95 euros? For a five-year-old Kilchoman? With a circulation of 17,000 bottles? Yes, kiss my ass (here for once without a mitigating *, because I meanwhile - sorry - find this behavior really crap).
Well, then it stays with this one sample. Conclusion here: very tasty, but absolutely overpriced.

Blackberries, blueberries, black currants, cherries and plums fill the air, all wrapped in fine peat smoke. This fruit note is extremely tasty, not a trace of youthfulness. Warm tar paper, pepper, salt, savory. Some nougat and marzipan, vanilla and caramel.
    • Taste
      88 88
Very pleasant start, the 50% is perfect. The tongue shows once again that Kilchoman really doesn't need to be afraid to bottle their whisky relatively young. Warm peat smoke, a compote of blackberries, wild strawberries and blueberries, nougat, marzipan, milk chocolate and toffee.
    • Finish
      88 88
For such a young whisky, it has a comparatively long finish. The berry mix still on the tongue, delicious peat smoke that is not too intense and not too weak, nougat, marzipan, slightly salty.
