I like some Deanston, I like some Tobermory and I think Macallan is hopelessly overrated and overpriced. So here's the worst of all... unbalanced, boring, unrecognizable, you can drink it - but you don't have to. Too bad, the key data complain too tempting.

A beautiful composition of Deanston, Macallan and Tobermory with a multifaceted load of red fruits. It is very soft and rounded with a finely adjusted, old-fashioned sherry aroma. But no trace of smoke - 23.10.2021
    • Nose

Noticeable alcohol that bites the nose, tobacco, leather, red berries, cherry juice, raspberry, fine roasted aromas, marzipan
    • Taste
      88 88
Watery texture, juicy, berry fruits, soft, the alcohol is very well integrated, the barrel tingles relatively late, oak, walnut
    • Finish
      87 87
Long and tart, unsweetened tea, no sweetness for me and completely on the woody side

Very tasty and delicious aroma profile. Unfortunately almost a little too smooth and bordering on a watery impression in the mouth. So unfortunately a bit expensive for what is offered.

It's at perfect drinking strength, but presents a challenge in all the best ways.
    • Nose
A subtle meaty element at first, as well as lightly smoked paprika powder, tobacco and old leather. It quiets down after a little while and settles into notes of apple peel, plums, pralines and almond paste. There's a touch of bung cloth and copper as well.
    • Taste
Slightly drying. Whiffs of hemp rope, smoked almonds, tobacco and menthol, this is not what I expected, but a pleasant surprise nonetheless. There's shoe polish as well, accompanied by milk chocolate, crème caramel and toffee.
    • Finish
Some liquorice, oak tannins and cranberries. Finally a touch of resin. Medium in length.

Very nice, complex nose, well matured, nice chocolate and fruit aromas on the palate. Almost perfectly integrated alcohol.

At the beginning citrus fruit, apples, slightly tart. Honey, fresh wood. Slightly sulfur, caramel, chocolate. Fine spices later.
    • Taste

Soft, sweet caramel chocolate, some cherry, vanilla, caramel
    • Finish
      89 89
Medium-long finish, fine malty and spicy finish, dark fruits, tobacco, chocolate. Well integrated alcohol.

had high expectactions. werent fullfilled. price of ~140€ is not really justified in my mind, tastewise. but nevertheless its definetly interesting.. in a weird way. up to 100€ and I propably would have grabbed a bottle.

its a bit like with the gone old pulteney 17 bottling. initial thoughts are "you can not like this" but it grows on me. this combination of salt, fruit and bitternes is strange, but somehow attractive and definetly not common or mass appealing. it shows character altough being a blend.

pretty closed. noticeable alcohol, it takes some time to get beyond that. behaves younger than the printed age, blind I would have sorted it rather around 18 years.

malt, herbs, a salty pulteney note, winegums and some (salted) plums, cherries and dried fruits. blackbread with jam. tart, spicy oak. a dry sherry note.
    • Taste
      87 87
salt, pepper, red fruits and a sweet (actual quite interesting) herbal note like in the bowmore 18, but much more expressed. traces of ash.
    • Finish
      87 87
      long, alcoholic, powerful.

the fruits turn into a very longlasting salty bitterness.

    • Nose
softly smoked cherries, roasted almonds, kellog's smacks.
    • Taste
sherry soaked fruitcake, gingerbread, gentle ledaig smoke, a pinch of black pepper and slightly hot.
    • Finish
dark chocolate (85 %), orange peel, campfire, cranberries.

A blended malt from The Maltman, 23 years old and labeled as blended with Macallen, Tobermory and Deanston whiskeys. There is nothing on the label about the casks used - but the color suggests a sherry influence. Proper age, sherry and Macallen - that promises hype. Released in autumn 2021, it is still readily available in early 2022, which could also be due to the price of €135 and up. The alcohol content is 45.8% vol. not high. Since this is supposed to be the natural strength, the angels had already claimed a fair share and at least one of the barrels probably needed to be bottled urgently.

    • Nose
In the nosing it is clear that sherry is involved. There is a strong sherry note that has matured well. In addition to dark fruits, there are also chocolate and nuts, some of which are coated with a layer of spices. The aroma is not immediately captivating, is bulky and has a maritime-tart aspect that could have come from the Tobermory. Or even from a cask that had to go… There are fruits present in the aroma, but they remain hidden behind this note, which also contains aromas of leather and dry tobacco. There is only a little sweetness, even after smelling it for a long time, the whiskey remains spicy, thyme and cough drops are added and a dry bitterness.
    • Taste
It's also dry in the mouth, lacking the oiliness I was hoping for and it flows a bit feebly, although the alcohol is definitely there. There is also a certain pepperiness, which maybe comes from the wood and makes the whiskey dry. There are only a few fruits, here too spicy notes dominate.
    • Finish
The aftertaste is dry wood aromas with a slight bitterness, which is not yet disturbing. In addition, there is dried sherry in the glass with a touch of Maggi spice.

Anyone expecting an elegant, settled sherry whiskey due to its age and the magical name of Macallen will probably be disappointed. It is a good whiskey with interesting aromas, which are more dry with tart spices than sherry-fruity sweet. The whiskey cannot meet the expectations that are raised due in particular to the one distillery and the age. And so the asking price is too ambitious.

This is not an elegant duke, but rather a grumpy lord who was in the sheepfold with the tweed suit and then carried some dusty firewood into the hall - but then developed his own harsh charm.
