This is an enjoyable Ben Nevis from a new independent bottler. This 1996 Ben Nevis Single Cask (# 1473) from The Whisky Jury shows an appealing sherry cask influence, but still retains some of the special Ben Nevis characteristic (barely). But the aromatic, tropical elements that my favorite Ben Nevis bottles have are very faint at best, and gone by the finish. The ABV while controlled is definitely on the more dominant side, with a fun, prickly cinnamon ginger note throughout the palate. A delicious dram overall, and I can’t wait to see more releases from this promising independent bottler.
    • Nose
      87 87
Sultanas, stewed plums. Gentle sherry influence, but not overwhelmingly so. Cloves, light Christmas cake, honey.

Halfway through the bottle: Sweet in-season melons, more sultanas, plum jam, sherried, but balanced.
    • Taste
      87 87
Medium-thick, oily mouthfeel. Cinnamon ginger on the front palate, but it’s controlled. Just a fun, prickly spice. It stays through the mid-palate, but starts to ease into a gentle fade by the finish. Intensely aromatic, tropical notes. Plums, raisins, but kept in check with notes of old leather, wood.

Halfway through the bottle: It’s sweeter now. The intense aroma that hits you during the front palate is reminiscent of layers of stewed plums mixed with almost mango, tropical elements, honey, it’s still very controlled. Balanced by that ABV, the ginger, musty, old furniture, oversteeped tea giving you a tannin effect. Dark chocolate (80% cacao).
    • Finish
      84 84
Long. Fading cinnamon spice that just leaves you with a nice gentle warmth. Fading plums, sultanas, with dusty dunnage and old furniture & leather. More bitter dark chocolate.

    • Nose
A full nose and very mature. Pronounced scent of the sherry barrel. Barley sugar and some waxy notes. Peach, pineapple and orange marmalade. Takes some time to reveal everything.
    • Taste
Strong oak entry with sherry character, showing walnuts, spices and herbal notes. Pepper, ginger and oak. With a drop of water, the fruit notes come out more..
    • Finish
Medium long finish with oak, a little vanilla, walnuts and mandarin.

    Nose:
Coffee, chocolate, toffee, but it's not too heavy to overwhelm everything. And this is one of the few BNs that I have encountered that smells excellent, citrus fruits mainly blood oranges, and the surprise is that it has the smell of rouge gouache, which is very pleasant. And everyone has a good balance with each other, and there are many fine aromas waiting for you to discover.

    Drink:
The mouthfeel is creamy, with plenty of orange juice gushing out, the acidity is very real, followed by mango, lemon tea, Wow, which is very good, but a bit extreme, I would prefer the smell.

    Overall:
I got four BN-1996s from different Bottlers together with Gene and blind tasted them together. This is the only sherry barrel, and I think it is also one of the few excellent sherry barrel BNs. It is very Interesting, would be a very good template, and have a lot to look forward to after opening the bottle.

An excellent sherried Ben Nevis, rich, not too sweet and slightly dirty. Very good selection... again.
    • Nose
Honey, candied oranges, dried figs and raisins, white peaches, gooseberries and other red berries strike first. Follow leather, damp earth, tobacco leaves, coffee, hints of camphor and a touch of chalk.
    • Taste
Punchy and rich. Tropical fruits, between juice and nectar, spices and dark chocolate. Red fruits syrup. Walnuts, mentholated notes, herbal notes. Leathery and earthy notes.
With water nose and palate's aromas are more blended but not less rich and tasty.
    • Finish
Long, chocolate, walnuts, liquorice and lingering earthy notes.

On the nose we have pine cones, eucalyptus, orange marmalade on burnt buttered toast, lemon shortbread, honey and black pepper. Less dirty than other sherried 1996 Ben Nevis, more clean and classic in terms of sherried highland profile, but somehow still quite unique. Quite musty on the palate, with marzipan and wood spice, a little bit of earth, banana and vanilla, mixed once again with eucalyptus and some candied ginger. Orange peel and clove, cinnamon, burnt brown sugar and herbal smoke on the finish. High quality Ben Nevis, as always seems be the case with these 1996 casks, however perhaps for me a little sharp, and the wood a little loud, both on the palate and finish, but the nose is a standout.

Rather fan, shame not to have nabbed a bottle release price.
    • Nose
The nose is surprising, on barley sugar and blood orange, leather and black fruits. A touch of acidity.
    • Taste
How good on the palate, intense, concentrated and warm. Blood oranges and fig cream, black cherry syrup, caramel. Slight floral freshness at the end of the palate before relapsing into the dirtier.
    • Finish
Long finish on cola, chocolate and slightly astringent coconut.

Great! The characteristics of the classical Ben nevis peach taste are transformed into an aroma similar to candied oranges by the sherry butt.
The comfortable aroma and taste are displayed. The overall structure is a bit similar to the performance of some old glenrothes sheryy butt in my stock.
This should be regarded as the best performance of American oak sherry matured whisky! (if it is really white oak)
    • Nose
      91 91
Candied oranges, melons and fruits, ripe fragrant grass, a little caramel, a little white peach hint, coffee, icing sugar, lemon tart
very classic clean sherry aroma I guess it is beautiful American white oak
    • Taste
      90 90
Very comfortable, very sweet, oily, balanced, orange lollipop, sarsi candy, chocolate
    • Finish
      88 88
The ending rhyme is medium, and the delicate sweetness emerges

N: dark fruits, almonds, marzipan, sweetness, floral, dirtiness present, dusty leather
P: beautiful texture, full body, creamy, dark fruits, old sherry, figs, a bit of vanilla and caramel, oak spice
F: sweet dark chocolate, cocoa, fades away nicely
Dark Ben Nevis. Very strange, its has some irritating notes that are at the same time so alluring, you just want to spend a time with it. It's really heavy, can't imagine to drink more than one dram, but perfect for a cold winter eve. 8/10

    Cola!

Wait... Another Ben Nevis from The Whisky Jury? That's already the fourth! But... the previous three were excellent, so I’m not complaining. And it's Joeri’s '2nd Anniversary Bottling', so let’s indulge him. The big difference with the previous releases is the cask type. The three Ben Nevis that Joeri selected earlier were all refill hogsheads, but this time he chose a sherry butt that yielded no less than 354 bottles at cask strength. Notice how the font of the official bottlings were subtly incorporated into this label. You have to have the guts.

Very sweet and deliciously sherried nose on red lace candy, blood oranges, gooseberry and melon, a cartload of dark, liquid honey and a beautiful touch of – do not laugh – cola! Then Café Noir cookies, soft cloves, hint of saffron and chocolate with praline filling. Boy oh boy, this is another belter.

Oh, my! On the palate, it offers much more than what the nose already promised, really. Nice and oily and sweet, but with a nice, warm spiciness. Think cola, fig jam, orange marmalade and even a hint of red fruit. Slightly drying maybe, but I’m already having too much fun to be bothered.

The finish is long, warm, dark, sweet and drying, but oh so satisfying.

I was able to busy myself with this glass for half an hour, it’s that complex a Ben Nevis. And still I felt my glass was empty too soon.
