Very nuanced nose, nice balance between on the one hand Sherry, with a nice fullness, red fruits, blood oranges, caramel, a hint of earth and leather, and on the other Bourbon, with a drizzle of white fruits and stewed vanilla. All solid thanks to a light peat and a controlled woodiness. Intense on the palate, white plums, red grapes, spices, paprika, nutmeg, cinnamon, and a beautiful, complex, fruity finish that sinks into a moist, spongy earth, rich and black, full of humus. Coal. A shade of lemon.

Easy drinking, balanced but leans on the sherry, delicious almost bordering a dessert dram for sweetness.

Haven't had this in ages before trying this batch - it's interesting and tasty. I can definitely see why this has disappointed some people in comparison to the 15 and the 12CS. The palate doesn’t really live up to the nose in terms of richness and complexity.
    • Nose
Fonky. Slightly sour earth, lightly industrial, some dried herbs, even a little farmy. Old books. Musky mango, pineapple, coconut husk, roasted apple, a hint of raisins, and grape tomato. A bit lactic - cheesecake. Creamy milk chocolate, manuka honey, salted caramel. Farmier with time. All of a sudden, cardamom, along with cola and graphite.
    • Taste
Medium texture. Soft orange, pineapple, rich caramel, lightly salty on the arrival. Moderate tobacco, oak, light peat, more mango and cola on the development. Farmy again. Slightly syrupy fruit, plus bittersweet citrus rinds.
    • Finish
Medium, earthy-rich. Lemon tea, chocolate fudge. Worn leather, lightly earthy, and a hint of peat smoke.

  8. Kegelbogen scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

Of course, for 300€+ I would not recommend this bottle to anyone. With a good aroma and average taste, this is just a drinking bottle and it is unnecessary to make a cult out of it.
    • Nose
      89 89
Lots of berries and typical Spring traits. Dust, leather, gentle chill and a little prunes.
    • Taste
      88 88
The body is liquid and after such an aroma it will immediately disappoint. Light peat, fruit and berry sweetness, pleases the chill that has been preserved from the aroma. In general, a very good balance.
    • Finish
      87 87
Short on light sweetness and peat.

  9. Petitcham scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

A lot of airing: soft and moderately rich body, the effects of sherry cask, the complexity, the cucumber and melon feel, the balanced spicy taste coming up from behind, the feeling better than the previous 18 years

instantly recognizable.. the idiosyncratic Springbank signature of apples, cinnamon and dunnage funk is sweeter than usual here.. this one drinks more like a 15.. only in the longer after-taste i am reminded of the extra time in the cask.. smoke returns strongly in the finish, with quite a bit of tartness.

  16. Archer scored this whisky 90 points Connoisseur

What a beautiful and calm 18yo. While I've occasionally felt that he could use a little more than his standard 46% in previous batches, I find it just right here. And 50% sherry / 50% ex-bourbon proves (once again) to be the optimal cask composition for Springbank. A really great whisky.
    • Nose
Very fine, very pure - the Springbank DNA shines through crystal clear in the nose. Hesitant at first (as is so often the case with the 18yo), the aromas gradually build up, starting with subtle raisins, grapes and pieces of peach. Yes, you can tell the 50% in the sherry cask, but the resulting aromas are not intrusive at all. Salty, mineral, earthy, a hint of smoke, a cold campfire, lemon zest, green tea. The maritime note is becoming more and more evident, beach grass, dry wood, damp sand. In addition, marzipan bread, cinnamon and coriander.
    • Taste
Yes! On the tongue as well as on the nose, it makes an impression that is as fine as it is pure. The edges are sanded and polished, but by no means boring, but appropriate to the age and resting in itself. Maritime, mineral, salty, very slightly smoky. Less sherry-heavy than in the nose, the bourbon casks involved in the maturation ensure a good balance between fruity notes on the one hand and vanilla-caramel notes on the other. Here, too, the idea of a warm evening on the beach, the sand slightly damp, the campfire just smoldering.
    • Finish
Long, slightly smoky, mild spiciness, very subtle fruit sweetness. Dry wood spreads more and more, the mineral note finds its climax in the finish, salt on the tongue, pieces of smoked peach.

    10cl samples

    Nose

Quite fleshy, umami, gravy, subtle sulphur, oranges and orange peel, leather, chocolate.

The taste is unfortunately a bit weak and diffuse. The 46% feels more like 43%.

In the finish it becomes clearly oaky-tart with hazelnuts and walnuts, chocolate, light sulphur. Departure rather medium long.

After the 12 cask strength batch 23 rather disappointing.

    Color: amber
    Great whisky
    • Nose
Sweet scent, strawberry tart, blueberries, very light earthy peat, ship hold, chocolate 80% cocoa, very light sulfur
    • Taste
On the palate it is very creamy, dense, panna cotta with berries, lemon chocolate, salted caramel
    • Finish
Long, meaty, grilled finish, barbecue sauce.

I did this Springbank 18 (batch 2021) back to back with the batch 2020. I have to give the edge to the previous batch (2020).

This batch (2021) is another proof that Springbank 18 is a sure shot. However, the batch 2020 had a better texture, it was oilier.

The taste of the batch 2021 is great, it is just thinner than the previous batch.

    • Taste

Creamy and intense, spicy and warming, the lemon zest is now becoming more of a ripe grapefruit, further salt and ashy smoke, espresso and tobacco
    • Finish

Still spicy and powerful, too bitter for my taste, some ash can also be found here

  27. Chris_V_Swan scored this whisky 90 points Expert Junior

    Powerful.
    Complex.
    Ripe and round.
    Exceeds my expectations.
    Compared to the 15 Springbank.
In fact: in comparison, a clear step forward.
    • Nose
      Clear spring bank profile.
Now, after 18 years of aging, more balanced and slightly more cask influence.
A massive, multi-layered variety of aromas flows out of the glass, which is super interwoven.
    • Taste
      Intense, oily, mouth-filling, pleasant.
You can chew it for minutes.
A new nuance is always emerging.
Great. Aromas and flavors unfold in waves.
      Exciting.
I went with the attitude that it was an overpriced hyped whisky that failed to live up to expectations. That's correct in a way, it exceeds my expectations.
    • Finish
      Very long.
Interplay of light smoke, oak, oil, shortbread and a little dried fruit.

Expectedly good release, bringing together a little bit of everything to satisfy the widest possible range of people. It is good to drink such whisky in a friendly company during a conversation - you will not be left alone with it.
    • Nose
Dried fruits: prunes, dried apricots, raisins, red apple, some dates. Thick and silky with a touch of sealing wax.
    • Taste
Sweet, with a slight inky bitterness, full of dark dried fruits.
    • Finish
      Sweet, lacquer, medium length.

First, let this one breathe for some time - it will reward you!
    • Nose
      90 90
There are lovely notes of dark honey along with dark berries like blueberry and bramble coupled with orange peel. There is something chalky and earthy to it - a bit like the floor of a dunnage warehouse. Additionally the whisky feels quite herbal with rather light hints of sherry (despite the pretty dark colour) and a subtle note of peat smoke.
    • Taste
      89 89
Theres's a certain freshness of hay and a mix of squashed dark berries mixed with shredded orange peel along with an old, dusty leather suitcase that belonged to a smoker. It's slightly dirty with dry but not overpowering notes of sherry, leaving room for the distillate to shine. The texture is slightly oily and the 46% feel like the perfect strength for this malt - even though I would love to try it at cask strength.
    • Finish
      88 88
The malt is medium long and warming with some more sherry in the finish. The light peat, a slight dryness and some chalky notes make for a complex, gentle and fascinating dram that's definitely fun to explore.

    • Taste

Wonderful balance between the Bourbon and the Sherry components which accentuates the distillery character in a very sophisticated way. Absolutely well proportioned relation between the coastal aspects, leather, nice dried fruits, subtle smokiness and the wooden influence of the sherrycasks.

Fruit and dark chocolate. A bit like those filled gingerbread hearts. Perfect ratio of sherry and bourbon notes.

On the tongue, then super-spicy and hearty and great oak notes from the bourbon barrel (on the side of the tongue with a certain dryness and bitter notes). In addition, the fruity sherry then increasingly towards the finish. Despite only 46% nice “crisp” but not “fresh”. Well, I have to say: Chapeau!
