Another excellent batch of Big Peat that's a little more subtle on the nose but just a powerful on the palate as you'd expect.
    • Nose
Some wet pebbles and ozone as well as salty sea spray. These coastal influences are followed by sauerkraut, golden syrup and some pickled lemons. Somewhat ashy. It's fairly light, more so than I'm used to from Big Peat.
    • Taste
A spicy arrival with plenty of cracked black peppercorns. The mouthfeel is pretty oily and there's obviously plenty of ashy smoke, but also some leather and fresh tobacco. Finally a touch of apricots and honey.
    • Finish
Lingering fruits, but mostly green apple now, accompanied by ashes. Medium to long.

A successful and recommendable bottling for the price. A tasty and honest Islay malt.
    • Nose
maritime; Seaweed; cold smoke; earthy; some tar; fresh citrus notes; plus a fine sweetness; a touch of vanilla; delicate herbs
      - Tasty honest Islay nose
    • Taste
creamy; ashy smoke lines the mouth; maritime notes; earthy-mineral; Tar; Tobacco; fresh citrus fruits
    • Finish
spicy; delicate citrus notes; ashy smoke

It was my first Big Peat and I was surprisingly confused what I have got for 50 EUR. Very good!

Douglas Laing Big Peat Christmas Edition 2021

At the end of the year, Douglas Laing fills its popular Big Peat as a special edition in cask strength and in a special Christmas design. This year's Christmas greeting from the island of Islay contains single malts from the distilleries Ardbeg, Bowmore, Caol Ila and Port Ellen.
    • Nose
Smoke, coal and ash with earthy, leathery notes.
    • Taste
      Smoky and extremely sweet.
    • Finish
Long finish, becoming dry, smoke and a delicate sweetness remain.

What the nose promises also keeps its word in terms of taste and finish! Diluted it to about 48-50%. You get a relatively simple whiskey that knows how to convince due to its intensity. He does what he offers excellently. Definitely not for people who prefer whiskeys that are moderately smoky at most. The current price of around 50 euros is extremely fair.
    • Nose
cold ashy smoke, behind it a strong citrus note, sweet, mineral stone (including lime), salty maritime notes, some herbs and grass, a very delicate hint of vanilla
    • Taste
Strong ash smoke, clear citrus note, sweet, spicy (pepper, salt, some chili), tingling on the tongue, very oily, slightly malty, walnut, again very delicate notes of vanilla, some honey, mineral, clear maritime notes, beeswax, creamy
    • Finish
medium-long, campfire smoke (with a tendency towards medicinal smoke), citrus notes, mineral-maritime notes, some tobacco and leather on the palate

Big Peat Christmas Edition 2021, Blended Malt, 52.8% alc. Bottler: Douglas Laing. Expansion: Bourbon barrels

Nose: Maritime smoky, brackish water and wet rocks on the beach, seaweed. Combined with coal fire, ashes and machine oil, it smells a bit like a forge on the beach. Behind these clearly smoky aromas there is a subtle sweetness, a little vanilla and lemon cake, a little nutmeg.

Palate: Quite a creamy start, despite the high alcohol content. Lots of peat, some tobacco and leather, vanilla and citrus fruits. Wood ash, sugar syrup and a little apple.

Finish: Long and here the smoke lingers even more intensely, and a pleasant sweetness continues to mix.

Conclusion: Wonderful blended malt with a very good price / performance ratio. 85/100 points (2021)

Delicious full-fat mouth experience. Powerful and smoky as expected given the malts present in this blend. Lots of smoke, tobacco and leathery flavors. But also some citrus fruit, honey of course and something from plums or dates? There's some doubt?
The nose is fresh and powerful, the finish is medium to long.

Personally, I consider this Christmas edition to be one of the best if not the best of all Big Peat Christmas outings.
Wonderfully sweet, smooth and very delicate. Simultaneously with the "tooth" and strong character of the Islay Island.
    • Nose
      87 87
sweet, candy, earthy, peat, a little pepper
    • Taste
      88 88
smooth, creamy, sweet, smoked boards from a smokehouse, sea seaweed, wet peat again
    • Finish
      88 88
medium, slightly peppery but very pleasant with an intense honey sweetness, a salty sea breeze at the end

Very chalky nose at first glance, with a certain minerality reminiscent of Caol Ila or Bunnahabhain, granite, shards of salt, gypsum, rocky mud. It goes well enough with a good big vanilla set with icing sugar and yellow plums, white grapes, mirabelle plums. Iodized freshness. In the mouth, we can clearly feel the influence of Bourbon, it is oily, slightly cereal, earthy. Finally a nice and rather long finish, but which lacks explosiveness for my taste. Coal, fuel oil, motor oil (maybe Laphroaig, or Ardbeg?)

Smell: This from a distance smells like a "buzz" in the quotes. The aroma is clearly strong and smoky. The character is generally so bright, grassy, malty
Taste: great, smoky, warm, in the climate it can be quite sharp for some. She also had a pleasant sweet and since 2016 a model which I really like again. The sweet, salty tones of syrup, citrus, apricots, taboo, but also green apple predominate.
