Powerdram, although the nose doesn't warn for that, there alcohol is quite calm. Fruity, roasted meat. Thick. Pleasant whisky for sure.
    • Nose
      88 88
Initially ripe red fruits, plums. Then some butter comes along, followed by more roasted meat, the earthy peat more to the back. Woodsmoke, somw alcohol but not punching, which is quite surprising for its high Abv. Milk chocolate.
    • Taste
      87 87
Quite poweful, licorice. Spicy, pepper, now its Abv is noticeable. Some fruity smokiness, oranges, plums, chocolate. Pretty thick structure. A bit drying mouthfeel later on, things seem to get even heavier in time.
    • Finish
      87 87
More smooth now, berries, smoke, a touch of roasted meat. Spicy, pepper.

Of course, the hype sensors kick in a bit: Williamson! Bessie Williamson was the woman of the Scottish whiskey industry: from the Second World War until her retirement in 1972, she determined the fortunes of the Laphroig Distillery on Islay. And is therefore certainly the mother of the success of today's American-Japanese group distillery (bye bye romantic). The Williamson name is currently the brand for independently bottled Laphroaigs, which may not appear as single malt but are teaspooned. Are we curious to see which Teaspoon we can taste here...
    • Nose
The teaspoon is not dominant in the nose, but the smoke. Laphroig smoke? My goodness, I'm not that sophisticated. Islay smoke! Sweet Islay smoke, which is maritime but not so medicinal at all, which has a fruit component, behind which a good measure of fermenting fruit pomace rots, which is not negatively noticeable. So a nice, fruity-sweet-maritime Islay note. Kelp candied with powdered sugar on the campfire on the beach.
    • Taste
Of course, do the whiskey at 59.9% vol. a few drops of water well. But somehow it works without it if necessary. So if there is a water shortage or something, you shouldn't waste anything. The sweetness gives the aromas enough support to stand up to the alcohol. Sure, at the end the aromas thank you for a few drops that put out the fire and let them shine more fully.
    • Finish
At the end remains burnt caramel. That happens every now and then at Laphroig, but a rubber boot and a load of purulent bandages were also caramelized. And to keep the caramel from burning completely, it was doused with a slosh of water from the bay between the Distillery and the tiny Isle of Texas and a few strong sprigs of kelp. Delicious!

Maybe not a typical Laphroaig, maybe a Laphroaig without all the medicinal stuff. But you don't always want to sit in the iodine-sticky ambulance sucking on the bandages, do you? Yummy Islay period. Why is everyone chasing after this scented Triple Wood that's legitimately being phased out?

Laphroaig is great - but Laphroaig could be really great if it weren't corporate loot. What's with all this dead-dyed broth? Islay is a wild, beautiful island. Moonshiners were at home here and no color panders!

A very cute young malt. The price-performance ratio is super. If I lived at the point of sale, I would buy a bottle for 80 €.
    • Nose
      88 88
Smoke with pear, apples and plums. Over time, it becomes more marine, there is a lot of salt in the aroma.
    • Taste
      86 86
Peat, smoked pear, salt on the palate. Feels youthful, if you know what I mean.
    • Finish
      88 88
The finish is average, there is a lot of salt and I like it.

Fruit, smoke, caramel, sweet, but pepper quickly fixes it. Long warming finish. 21-22-22-22

A classic Williamson tastes different. Ok, I'm one of those people who prefer the atypical bottlings for a distillery. So this should be my whiskey.

But unfortunately one expects something that goes towards Laphroaig. I've got to know and love too many Williamsons for that. Good smoky whiskey with an atypical taste for Laphroaig at a reasonable price.

Here notes come out that are more reminiscent of a Macduff or Glen Garioch.

For me, this whiskey is far away from 90 points because the caramel butter and the smoky notes do not harmonize very well and tend to interfere with each other.

For me the whiskey was more of a disappointment, even if I am alone with this opinion.

Maybe it's just because I don't think Butter Scoth and Rauch are the ideal combination.
    • Nose
      86 86
The smoke comes out immediately. The alcohol is very reserved for almost 60%. A slight sweetness comes out that you don't expect here. Vanilla croissants, shortbread, butter scotch, creme brulee.
    • Taste
      84 84
The smoky aromas quickly make way for caramel, butter, scotch, vanilla, creamy oily. The smoke fades into the background
    • Finish
      84 84
The finish is limited, a butter-vanilla cream dominates here too. The smoky audacity is missing at first. But in the end it comes to the fore with all its might. I compared the whiskey with the SMWS 6.40, which was clearly ahead of the Williamson with its butter-caramel notes.

Laphroaig with sherry cask maturation is a combo that will always peak my interest. And this expression is the reason why.

Heavy on the smoke, tar and maritime notes, with the sherry fighting through all that with Praline, burned caramel, dark brown syrup, thick warm milk chocolate sauce.

This is right up my alley. Highly highly recommended!

    Islay at its best

Williamson... would Betsie have agreed that her name would be used to bottle Laphroaig – whether or not it is teaspooned? I think so, because the distillery was very close to her heart. It is the first Laffie (if we can call it that) that Asta Morris brings to the market.

Firm, but not burning, nose on Ganda ham (with rind), espresso, banana, but also ashes, leather and moss. Hint of a goat shed. Softly creamy and equally softly smoky. Surprisingly sweet for such a young Laphroaig.

The taste is a perfect sequel to the nose, but still takes the sweetness to the next level. Caramel, candy sugar and an excellent smoke development. A drop of brackish water comes to dot the proverbial i. Yes, ladies and gentlemen, this is Islay. Some maritime touches come up firmly and give the sweetness a lot of scrutiny. Wonderfully creamy, by the way.

And then that finish. Let's just say Finish. Brackish and sweet at the same time with all ashes and smoke.

    Islay at its best.
