Quite possibly just not the style (red-wine finish) for me. Had an off-putting taste and to be honest no redeeming qualities. Tasted in a blind lineup of 7 whiskys.

Test after 1 hour waiting ...
I am unpleasantly surprised by this release of Aberfelda. I had drunk the version in Bordeaux wine barrels before, and that one was great for me, so much so that I was tempted to buy the whole bottle. Here, unfortunately, but I will not decide to take this step.
While the first contact with this whisky because of the aroma was quite good, which is strong, intense with lots of fruit and honey sweetness, the rest is too bitter and peppery for me. It is true that it does not smoke to such an extent that I could put it down and give it a grade below a decent level, but when tasting it, this bitterness disturbed me a lot. A little plus ... Alcohol very well hidden and not intrusive .....
    Additional 45 minutes ...
It is much better, the aroma is not that intense and penetrating anymore, but you can feel more red berries, there is also vanilla pudding.
The taste is a completely different dram. Lots of sweets, fruitiness, raspberries, biscuits, bitterness gave way to notes of lemon peel. Although the finish has shorter, it is much better, richer in honey and wine residues.

For the extra time, airing, I add 2 points.
The overall score was then 86 points.
One conclusion is that it needs a lot of time after pouring it into the glass.
    • Nose
      85 85
strong, expressive, intense, quite sweet, winey, fruity, apples, raisins, blueberries, heather honey
    • Taste
      84 84
creamy, slightly spicy, peppery, later red berries, currants, toffee, traces of vanilla
    • Finish
      83 83
long, slightly salty, honey, bitter, a lot of oak and pine needles

Aberfeldy 18 years, batch 2921, 43% alc. Original bottling (2021). Aging: Bourbon casks, post-maturation for 4-5 months in French red wine casks

Nose: Closed and quiet, this Aberfeldy hides a bit and doesn't want to be found for the first few minutes. It slowly thaws aromatically and comes with a fairly creamy sweetness. Forest honey and beeswax catch my eye, as well as roasted almonds and pistachios, with very delicate tangerines and peaches in the background. I sense some milk chocolate and coffee, surprisingly subtle for a red wine finish.

Palate: Powerful and bitter. Blood oranges, caramel and slivers of almonds, sour cherries come with nutmeg and pepper, also removes a little cinnamon. What the nose was still hiding is now twice as effective. I also taste some earthy flavors and various kitchen herbs, espresso.

Finish: Medium length and again much more elegant than on the palate, the honey slowly returns and the finish becomes pleasantly sweet and creamy with it. In addition, a slightly spicy bitterness.

Conclusion: Some would say a bit unbalanced, others would say complex and exciting. I count myself among the latter, I really like it. The bitterness on the palate will probably not appeal to some connoisseurs, but you should definitely try it. 85/100 points (2022).
