Whisky reviews for Glenglassaugh 1986 DR

4 users have left 5 reviews for this whisky. Average rating is 85.39 points.

  1. Kopite scored this whisky 75 points Expert Junior

Tasted during the great Glenglassaugh evening alongside 17 other expressions. This particular A.D. Rattray bottling recieved the lowest overall score, mainly due to the severe cask influence. Sulphur, acid, oak... Simply too much going on. Some positive raisin notes in between, but this cask has been way to powerful.

  2. Calmar scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

An excellent sherry werewolf, imposing, sweet and relaxed in flavor, changes dramtically in taste / finish, sheds sheep skin, shows fangs and plays with muscles.
    • Nose
Open, wet, sweet-sherry, chocolate, raisins, dried apricots, Indian incenses, spicy wood, pipe tobacco, pastry notes, baklava, prunes, rotten foliage, herbarium, furniture lacquer, light mineral-metallic and sulfur shades, very thick and juicy , oriental bazaar under the scorching sun.
    • Taste
Powerful, rich, more mobile and stiff than aroma, more wood, prunes, a lot of raisins, cola, liquorice, kvass wort, furniture lacquer, dried grapes, burnt match heads, mixed colors.
    • Finish
The continuation of taste, refreshing, cola, exploding caramel, liquorice, oak, coffee, raisins, burnt rusks, metallic acidity.

I want to relativise my tasting note a bit. After a long time, over 45 min, the Malt evolves in a good direction and becomes quite drinkable, even enjoyable.
But should i change my rating therefore?

I love Glenglassaugh. Usually. But this one sucks! The worst i´ve ever had.
    74 well meant Points
    • Nose
First nice dark fruits, rum raisins, leather polish ans strong alc. Hints of apple vinegar and even some sauerkraut + geranium water °_°
With more time and air the vinegar stays back, but still not what i call a good nose.

+water: More floral, less sauerkraut, less alcohol, some chicken madras :D  a bit more pleasant.
    • Taste
Bitter, sharp alcohor, moldy blood orange, omg, why am i drinking this?

+water: Better, not sooooo sharp + some floral notes. But still not good.
    • Finish
Bitter, bitter, bitter, still something moldy, some interesting Spices at the end but also sharp alcohol till the end.

      +water: Same as the taste

A very nice sherried Glenglassaugh. No off notes.

I compared three Glenglassaugh at one evening:

The Wilson Morgan has a bitterness in the final, so this is why this one takes the third place. The better sherried whisky in the DR one, really nice no off notes, enjoyable.
A bit out the range, because bourbon matured, is the Dorment.
This is the one with the most Glenglassaugh character (well it is a bit obvoius, because there is no sherry which overlays the fine and fruity Glenglassaugh style ;-) )
