Saturated whisky, in which everything is plentiful: if spices are felt to bitterness, if sweetness, then it is like a roll of raisins, prunes, dried apricots, dried cherries, figs and nuts, ground and brought together into a single mass, and not even tea, but tea brewing, which binds the mouth, knits. Even a high degree is not felt through these thick tones.

    Tamdhu Cigar Malt 53.8%.

    25ml sample, May 2022.

Very dark pour. I consulted some colour charts but they all seem contradictory. So let’s just say its a very dark orange.

Aroma is muted, certainly raisiny, touch of rust and raw steak, mostly raisin though. Surprisingly closed. Metallic. If you search hard enough you can find new leather and dried orange peel behind the raisin and rusty metal. If left for a good while some coffee liqueur comes out. The emptied glass smells intense but by then it’s too late.

    Body is watery.

Taste is concentrated but not hot or spiky. Dense and heavily sherried without being silly or cloying or gloopy. Raisins and dates and just that concentrated dark European oak character. The drying tannic linger offsets the fruit without getting bitter.

It’s simple on the palate but it’s very pleasing. Some good casks were used. The intensity on the palate is very nice and there’s not a rough edge, although there’s limited complexity. More simplistic than even many single casks are.

On the whole this is a very nice heavily-sherried dram. Great concentration on the palate. Pity the aroma doesn’t match up. Anyway it grew on me...or maybe it just got me a little tipsy. Either way I increased the score a touch over time. 3.65/87

Nose: Dried fruits, raisins in the foreground, then toffee, hazelnuts and bitter almonds, followed by cinnamon, liquorice root, tobacco and other spicy aromas.
Taste: Intense, very creamy and spicy, crème brûlée, white pepper and some ginger, still sweet and the dried fruits come through again, maraschino cherry, liquorice.
Finish: Long, very dry, raisins and spicy oak.
Conclusion: With its intense aromas, it could definitely stand up next to a cigar. But it would be a shame for me personally, it just tastes too good for me.

Tamdhu Cigar Malt, Batch 1, 53.8%. Original bottling. Ageing: Oloroso sherry casks (first fill).

Nose: Very sweet and slightly dry. Rum balls next to dark chocolate and dried berries. I find roasted almonds, raisins, wine gums and a little nut cake, as well as cigars in leather cases and sandalwood. There is a hint of cinnamon in the background. With time, the fruit component becomes clearer, plum jam and cherry juice come to mind.

Palate: Thick, oily, intense. Here, too, some raisins, some cane sugar and tobacco smoke, I also find cedar and oak. In addition to the quite strong sweetness, there is also an intense spiciness, lots of cinnamon and some children's liquorice, a hint of sulfur and, to round it off, pleasant nougat pralines.

Finish: Medium length, cinnamon chocolate and blood orange, latte and a hint of pepper

Conclusion: No age statement, but there were also a few significantly older barrels in play here. Sherry cask aging is often said to go well with cigars, but this whisky would be far too good for me as a pure accompaniment. A really strong tamdhu. 88/100 points (2022)

The name says it all, you have to stand by 1st Fill European Oak. It's delicious, but unfortunately way too expensive.

Reminds me of the really good 2006 single casks. Very aromatic but also very very spicy. The only tiny "weakness": When starting, the alcohol is very strong. Otherwise a great malt.
    • Nose
      92 92
The malt almost sticks to the glass wall, releasing intense, deep flavors just the way I like them; tropical fruits, preserved red fruits, dried fruits, plus a library, leather armchairs, pipe tobacco and lots of wood spices.
In addition to Oloroso Sherry, I would also assume wine or port wine barrels. Certainly at least a part of First Fill.
    • Taste
      90 90
Strong, peppery attack, then it initially remains very spicy, oak-heavy and dry. Then a little dark chocolate and nuts. It takes a little while for the fruit to shine through again. But these come back and complement the overall picture. The drought returns.
Very oily in the mouth and therefore highly present.
    • Finish
      90 90
The aroma also remains stable and complex at the back, but also accessible. Rather long. Can certainly bear the name as Cigar Malt.

A very fine sherried whisky. In the young-sherry-bomb category, I'd say it's better than everything around except for Arran Bodega and Glenallachie 10 CS. I tried this blind next to Kavalan Solist Manzanilla and preferred this one.
    • Nose
Rich sweet sherry, with dominant brown sugar and spice notes. Butter tarts (that’s a Canadian note for you), pralines, chocolate caramels, and graham crackers. Nutmeg and cinnamon, dusted atop a banana split. Candy apples, golden raisins, and red-on-the-inside plums. A little floral - rose petals and habanero. Very slightly herbal, or tea-ish.
    • Taste
Medium texture, very little heat. Sweet throughout, starting with rich fruitcake and candied orange. Buttered toasted raisin challah, toasted coconut, brown sugar, and honeycomb. Develops to chewy oak, grape must, orange pekoe, and a hint of tobacco.
    • Finish
Medium-long, sweet and buttery. Orange peel and clove. Big caramel and treacle.

Very beautiful whisky, a lot of red fruits, full bodied. But certainly no sherrybomb, pretty smooth but thick. Very enjoyable.
    • Nose

Very fruity, raisins, plums. Tobacco leaves. Old leather. Coffee, rhubarb. Stewed pears. Green of plants. No alcohol punch at all.
    • Taste
      90 90
Pretty smooth, a sour, red fruity base, cherries and berries, orange. Thick, oily. Plums, a nice sparkle now.
    • Finish
      89 89
Still smooth yet warming. Red fruits, berries, some bitter touch now, pretty long. Chocolate, more and more.

Unfortunately, that is a disappointment. Slightly smoky on the nose, which goes well with a cigar malt, the fat sherry notes of Hammer-Tamdhu are unfortunately missing. The alcohol isn't well integrated either. It burns on the palate ... and yes, a sour note also comes through ... vinegar fits the description. You can give 85 points, but not 90. What a shame!
