    01/17/2014:
    Poor and straightforward. Not impressed.
He didn't have a sample, but a miniature, so I'm sure that's what played a key role in the negative impression. Later I tried this whisky from a standard bottle and it was good.
    • Nose
Freshly painted wood, acetone, caramel, oven pie with apples and plums, berry sour, not much.
    • Taste
Persimmon, tart, dry and sour, binds, sugar and salt in equal proportions.
    • Finish
Closer to average, acidity and dryness.

Normally, the inexpensive 12-year-old standard bottlings from Scottish distilleries are very soft and round whiskys, which are also very suitable for beginners. The 12-year-old from Bunnahabhain defies strength and offers significantly more than a 12-year-old entry-level whisky. This fact is also due to the increased alcohol content, which harmonises perfectly with the intense aroma. In this age and price range, it is one of the few bottlings of which I always have a bottle in the bar.

    • Nose
The first impression is very strong and sweet. Then it becomes fruitier with candied dried fruit, peaches and apricots. A little behind the fruit you can find vanilla, crème brûlée and some malt. A little further behind, a hint of smoke and maritime notes can be guessed. When the nose gets used to these intense impressions, the aroma becomes a bit spicier with nutmeg.
    • Taste
Just as strong as in the nose, whereby the sweetness stands out even more clearly here. This results in an almost syrupy mouthfeel. You can feel the sherry and the dried fruit strongly now. This impression is complemented by oak influences such as spices, some pepper and a delicate bitter note.
    • Finish
The sweetness remains present until the end, but then becomes increasingly weaker and the impression becomes a bit drier. The delicate bitterness and spices accompany the finish. Roasted coffee beans also come to mind. The finish is long and warming.

Also a good bottling. But I have to admit that the new 12 tastes better. With the 18 and 25 year olds I found the old bottlings better.

Fair price and an interesting and different Isley malt. I had expected a little more, because the reviews were so positive.
    • Nose
Salty, maritime. Notes like a beach walk on the North Sea. Floral notes that are reminiscent of a forest. Very nutty. Wine aromas after a while. Has some smoked later, but I do not notice smoke.
    • Taste
strong, sparkling. Certain red wine influence. 46% felt. Slight alcoholic sharpness. In addition, very fruity.
    • Finish
sweet and peppery. It adjusts itself a liquorice note, which reminds me extremely of Katjes children. In the course of becoming drier. Leaves a similar mouthfeel like a dry wine.

Another excellent standard expression that is still to be found under 40€ a bottle. I adore its oily mouthfeel and it definitely packs a punch for being just over 46% ABV which is a very pleasant surprise. Great autumn dram too! This 12-year-old will be a permanent resident in my whisky cabinet.

Nose: dark old sherry, balsamic vinegar, wax, delicate wood notes, later blackberries, black currants
Taste: Palate Cinema -   starts gently, mildly, oily, smooth and sweet, then spreads fruity acidity with very intense slightly alcoholic cherry flavor and chocolate notes (Mon Cherie?), followed by milk chocolate with peppermint, one lets air rise on the palate gingerbread spice and cinnamon, so I did not have that intense in any malt, wood, sawdust, coffee, chocolate and a nice sweetness form a medium to long finish
Conclusion: wow 12years? real? others are not keeping up with their 18 years. Flavors, ripeness, alcohol strength - this malt has just done everything right, a hammer fabric for its price - not far from the Allardice

N: There’s an undeniable pong emanating from this and everyones scrunching their faces up at it. I’m sure it will dissipate soon enough, as the bottle just got popped [interestingly, auto-correct changed the word ‘bottle’ to ‘battle’]. In the meantime, disregarding the pond-water sulphur whiffs, theres also some gunpowder and really salty tomato & salt ’n’ vinegar crisps as the main key descriptors thus far. Unfortunately that sulphur pong never does leave and yet it doesn’t quite detract from developments of a chocolaty & fruity nature, with a sweet-vegetal turn.
T: This has a lovely dry mouthfeel that’s akin to chewing on squidgy dried apricots. It’s very woody for a 12yo [assuming this is the case], with some inevitable ‘boing’ and sweet aniseed.
F: Long finish on waxy-acetone, vanilla and dry-oak. The continuing ‘boing’ translates now as a sweet funk with oaked raisins, candy/aniseed sweets and a sherry-bourbon woody-biscuit finish.
C: This is really nice stuff if a little funky with that sulphur ‘boing’ jumping around like Zebedee on a weekend booze cruise. Still, its very good whisky and characteristic - but of which distillery? Revealed! - one of my all-time favourite malts, and yet its been 4 years since i last tried a current version when on a bewildering visit to the distillery. Since then i’ve been enjoying the more slick/stewed, heavier oily/sherried and smokier 12yo’s from the 1990’s - going cheap at auction, though batch consistency is iffy. This 12yo however is rather different in profile to any expression of Bunna 12 i’ve had [and i’ve had a few], and it’s right up there with the better batches. If there’s one thing Bunnahabhain is excellent at it’s inconsistency, but when its good its good,….

A super standard that will take the place of the 10 Bruichladdich with me, a smoke-free islander with substance and good price-performance ratio, always happy!
    • Nose
Cereals and citrus fruit, vanilla sweet, with time some sea breeze, dates, sherry and oak
    • Taste
Creamy and oily, almost creamy in the mouth, but not mild, you can feel the good 46% without it would interfere. First dominated by caramelized orange, light malt and some salted milk chocolate in tense relationship with dingy-dirty leather
    • Finish
Long and dry become with constantly present malt caramel and Bourbon vanilla note

  27. Marko_I did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

Beautiful, like overlooked / forgotten standard bottling, full-bodied, full of character, not soft-washed, with 40-45 € fair prizes.
    • Nose
sweet, malty, honey, creamy, nut nougat cream ... with panning and deep sucking comes a slightly mineral note, some earth, hay, but the sweetness is predominant and is very pleasant
    • Taste
again sweet, malty, nougat ... but not as creamy as the nose, in addition to oak (spiciness, leather, slight bitterness), yes, a bit snappy and dirty it probably, in the soil rotting wood
    • Finish
long, bittersweet to bitter, walnut, oak, pepper, a hint of licorice

Comparative tasting with a 1970s bottling
    https://www.whiskybase.com/whisky/70484/bunnahabhain-12-year-old

Interesting comparison. The nose of the current came to me after the well-defined nose of the 70s properly taped. I had not noticed that before. Overall, the current but has more depth of flow and has become significantly "darker" of the overall character. The nose of the old but I like somehow better.
    • Nose
gentle and sweet, a lot more sherry notes, still malty, a little bit of root vegetables, also nuts and leather, some balsamic, but less clear and focused due to the sweetness.
    • Taste
He has a nice start, nutty, malty, subtle sherry flavors. The salt, the maritime comes out beautifully, a little dirty affects the whole. I like that.
    • Finish
beautiful bitter-sweet finale, with time more leather, oak and a hint of peat.

Wow, that's wa, I would not have expected it for the price. Interesting and varied nose, wonderfully fruity and sweet on the palate and dangerously tasty. Much more sherry than expected and far less "dirty" and salty on the palate.
    • Nose
Salt, sea, some sherry, berries, vanilla, walnuts, caramel, smoke, I feel not, honey, some leather, again salt, cherries, a certain pungent sharpness, a little dirty, later always sweet and fruity, the sherry is stronger and sweeter
    • Taste
first sweet, then very fruity and spicy, the 46% are very well chosen, pleasant, some oak, caramel
    • Finish
Seasoning, a touch of smoke, espresso, oak, very fruity, dark chocolate, some leather, herbs, medium-long

Car tires, brackish water, fermented cherries. You have to get through first, but then come the sherry notes, tart herbs, a light citrus note, sea breeze, leather. In the mouth then very fruity, caramel, pungency. In the finish again the dusty leather, salt, but also fructose.

For a standard very exciting, multi-layered and very yummy.

Wonderful whisky. A lot more sherry influence than I expected. The smoke, which is almost completely peat-less to me, is extremely pleasant. The palate seems to have some cognac and rum-like flavours.
    • Nose

    • Taste
Sherry, smoke, liquorice, salt, citrus and purple grapes

It took a while to get to know this whisky. At first he seemed very unusual and exciting. Sweet and salty at the same time with this sparkling sharpness. But with every glass, there is also the certainty that the complexity is only fooled. There's a parent note that reminds me of something metallic / youthful. Despite everything, it is not a bad malt. On the contrary; the curiosity for this distillery is awakened - 11.03.2016
    • Nose
Creamy, cream, salty air, sea breeze, always a sweetness that reminds a little of warm chocolate pudding, walnut, white grapes, star fruit
    • Taste
Salty, vanilla, ginger that spreads throughout the mouth and tingles, oily, creamy, spicy, not bitter at all

2015 bottle code (L5) : at first contact i thought i'd opened a nice nutty sherry. so vanilla and marzipan with some hazelnut.

with water a creamy barley and a soapy note - nice high quality soap :)

theres a spirity nature to the whisky which gives a little heat and some peppered fruit.

very nice viscous body, coats the mouth. sweet to sour and then a dryish tannin rich finish.

First off I thought something was wrong with the bottle or something. So I put it away and didn't touch it for a few months. But when I gave it another try I absolutely loved it. But now, near the end of the bottle it gets less enjoyable again.

    Good standard, lacking in complexity.
    • Nose
A little smoke, and some wild herbs. Behind all a sweet towards honey. Grasig, behind it a trace of iodine and sea in the nose.
    • Taste
Very soft in the beginning, it gets wild sooner. An initially salty note swirls quickly into the bitter, almost as if you had licked to alluvial wood. If you try several times it will be more pleasing and a lot sweeter.
    • Finish
Slightly peppery, tingling and slightly bitter, it sounds just sweet and a few tannins remain.

An unusually soft whisky from Islay, but still with character! At this price, you get a really complex, wonderfully matched and well-matured drop that you enjoy again and again and you can always win new nuances. One of my eternal favorites!
    • Nose
First and foremost, crisp and oily-spicy scent envelops the nose, reminiscent of a passageway on a fairground, a salty breeze from the sea, then pickled cherries, oak, rum, vanilla, faint smoke in the background. A few drops of water open the flavors and the smoke is more prominent.
    • Taste
The purest carousel ride at the start! Delicious aromatic mousse, on the palate rather dry dark fruitiness and a slightly tart oak note with a creamy sweetness, which spreads throughout the mouth and brings the salivary glands at full speed. Wow!
    • Finish
Then a long soft finish with a persistent oak sherry note and a pleasantly mild trail of smoke.

Greetings the captain of the label Bunnahabhain comes into the glass. Where is he from, Captain? Is he going to Islay? Or did he just wait for us in his cozy warming uniform to take us on a journey? If we release the drop that he brings with us into our glass and slowly pans, then we notice, he lives on Islay rather by chance and does not want to have much to do with the smell of his colleagues except for the local quality. The smoke has kindly come from the campfire, the bunnahabhain brings us with its 12 years rather a broad malty note that oscillates a little between sweet and sour. The longer he wanders around in the glass and absorbs the air of the big wide world, the more he reveals his core. Because somehow the rough coast seems to have found its way into the glass. Waves pounding the edge of the shore and rinsing algae in the salty water - it was a long day when the captain transported his island exotic, fresh oranges and dark fruits, he will have had on board. One last time I swing the glass impressed to marvel at how much the dark golden drops hang on the glass wall - it takes an unusually long time for the first legs to form. But then it happened, the first sip finds its way into my throat and ... my mouth receives a special kindness, the captain needs a moment to warm up with me. Used to his new environment, he shows that he can come up with a certain depth. At the beginning, I still taste the mild orange juice and this image swings around quickly - a journey of taste buds begins. The stronger it develops in the mouth, the captain shows that he is a multi-layered character, a certain acidity quickly gives way to a dry spice paired with a strong peppery, crisp note. Strong is also the right word for the finish. If the captain leaves you, he is not quite gone yet. It lingers for a long time, the warming sensation in the mouth and neck accompanied by a note of bitter orange between profound and dominant. Sure, the captain is a guy with character.

This one is an absolute beauty. I had it at a whisky tasting for the first time and wasn't blown away. But tried it again with a clean palette and oh my did it get me. It's delicious but it's a tender sweet flavor best to drink as a first of the evening on a clean palette. 100% recommend this one. And 46.3% abv, non chill filtered and non colored are just the icing on the cake.

-Edit: After a full bottle of experience 14-01-2016
    • Nose
Vanilla, cinnamon, creamy butter,  salted rich caramel, brown sugar, hazelnuts, oak and coffee
    • Taste
Oak, sherry, dried fruits, saltiness sorta reminds me of salted pecan nuts, definitely sweet undertone, beautiful balance.
    • Finish
Medium long, nice sweet lingering of caramel and red dried fruits, freshly homemade cake with raisins and the oakwood note is very appearent in a lovely fashion.

Amazingly delicious, spicy taste. Filled and with sweet sweetness. Toner of dark chocolate and black pepper. Really good and affordable! Something too spicy smell though. Update: In later testing, I think the excitement has gone through too much in the taste as well. A little too sharp and I do not experience the spice in the same way. Need a lot of time in the glass. Adjusts the score after that.

Full of complexity and very dynamic bouqet. This is a really fine whisky and quite different for an Islay. Very drinkable at 46% and if you like your sweet sherry cask whiskies this is a must try.
    • Nose
Barley Sugar, sherry, maple syrup, toffee, raisins, little hint of that Islay sea spray smell.
    • Taste
Spice first up, then some woods, nuts and sherry, christmas pudding, some brine. Nice solid mouthfeel.
    • Finish
Long rolling spicy and sweey sherry finish

Has a special character that does not really appeal to me. I am annoyed by these false notes of sulfur and the burned rubber sole, for which there are clearly deduction points (-6). The medicine cabinet is different from the classic hospital / gauze aroma, rather smells like a large mix of different pills and other drugs.
    • Nose
slightly alcoholic, sanded rubber sole with light sulfur note, fino sherry, blossom honey, garden herbs, artificial raspberry flavor, medicine cupboard
    • Taste
slightly sweetish, fresh bright fruits, again the medicine cabinet, ornate oranges and peaches, some brackish water
    • Finish

A good dram with plenty with of flavors. The metal note on the finish is unfortunately off-putting but the nose and the taste is really good. The finish benefits from the addition of a teaspoon water.

    (Rating interval 83-86)
    • Nose
Spring flowers, raw cabbage, sour with some unripe apples and currant. Some raspberry candy, artificial banana and tea. After 20 minutes in the glass the scent of starch appear (freshly ironed shirt).
    • Taste
Creamy vanilla, again floral, with an oaky spiciness, nutmeg, sawdust, honey and black pepper.
    • Finish
medium in length, the unripe apples returns with the vanilla, a slight metal kind of note before an oaky pepperiness comes forward.

Tasted blind for whisky-distilleries.info WDTS: http://www.whisky-distilleries.info/WhiskyWDTS/index_EN.shtml
    • Nose
Rather typical young sherry. Fudge and soft wood extracts. Quite sweetish (caramel-colored ?). Ever tried eating your strawberries with red wine and tons of sugar? Needs a little time before unfolding on dry fruits. Almond peels. Sugar coated roasted peanuts.
    • Taste
Quite some oomph despite an ABV that is probably around 46%. The nice part is still played by the caramel (well, more candi sugar than fudge, this time) and dry fruits (same roasted peanuts). The mouth is creamy, but the whole remains fairly stereotyped.
    • Finish
Develops on a hint of burnt wood and a gentle bitterness that sustains the mouth.

    To address the sulphur issue:

When I just opened the bottle for the first time, the sulphur was obvious.

    I was quite disappointed.

But after only a few days, thanks to the initial oxidation, the sulphur is almost gone completely. I expect it to disappear entirely in the coming weeks.

The whisky feels older than its 12 years, and has great notes of honey, oranges, hazelnuts and milk chocolate.

  129. TDMartijn scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

Much better than the previous 12yrs distillery bottling (pre-2010), lots of sherry influence. Didn`t get any of those sulphur-notes.

Spicy on the palate, with some saltiness in the background. Medium length, but not particularly distinguished, finish. Opens up nicely with a drop or two of water. Kudos to the distillery for bottling at 46.3%.

    • Nose
Is remarkably crisp and sweet aromas reminiscent of the sea, with notes of flowers and perfume background with smoke and oak
    • Taste
A full, rich and hearty character. Soft, sweet and pure flavors of nuts and malt tones of oak, honey, syrup and a hint of spice.
    • Finish
A pleasant long and spicy finish that gently flows away

A giant leap forward for Bunnahabhain 12yo, this edition was launched in

summer 2010 with a jump in strength to 46.3% and a declaration of no

chill-filtration and no added colouring. Enormous credit goes to Burn

Stewart for giving punters what they want without jacking up the price

    too much.

The nose is sweety, sherryish and fruity with some sulphur With water a bit nicer. Taste of sherry and quite some spicies as well as some coffee and smoke. With three drops of water much nicer!! The finish starts again with the sulphur, also brings some pepper. And something sweet, but I realy don`t know what- Nice whisky, but not great imho.

Quite a surprise (the new craft presented bottling)

A bit of a sherry monster! Complex, easy drinking, and very affordable.

Has hints of Springbank 18, GlenDronach 15, and Glenfarclas 17.

    89/90 B+/A-

    • Nose
Soft but chewy sherry +/o, malt sweetness/ drops o, earthy peat o/-, dishwashing liquid (artificial lemons & a somewhat bittery note) -. (82)

Later: Quite a lot of fudge & caramel now +, sand o/-, (83)
    • Taste
      sherry +/o with quite a surprisingly bitter nutty touch o & salt o (77)

Later: bitterness is less upfront, but still present. More malt sweetness (80)
    • Finish
still sherry & some bitter notes, salt coming occasionally back too but also a bit of fudge & malt sweetness. Bitterness goes into woody dryness & becomes a bit more pleasant for me. (79)

Later: as above, but more balanced, a bit less drynness, some dough-y/yeast-y notes appear, also some chlorine (83)

It's well done, academic but does not dream. Makes me think of a Glenmorangie The Lasanta.

    • Nose
Acidulated on the green apple peel. Cranberry tip. Then very sweet on caramel, butter scotch, sweet butter, candy sugar. Very typical sherry. This profile disappears after a fortnight of ventilation, then returns. Part of hide and seek because the acidulous side does the same. Slight smoke.
    • Taste
      Sweet, fat, creamy.
    • Finish
Intense and long. Nuts (nuts) and dried fruits. Salivating.

You can sense how good this would (and will) be when they get it together without the sulphur.
    • Nose
Very sulphury. Whoever put this batch together really messed it up. The
sulphur makes the usual delightful Bunnahabhain oranges seem dark and
bitter. Rich dark chocolate too, then the Islay air comes to the fore
      with a blast of ozone.
    • Taste
A real punch up between the delightful orangey malt and struck-matches.
It's a very unsatisfying draw. Salty/sugary overtones help to ease the
      pain.
    • Finish
Cocoa powder, sulphur and a bitter twist at the end.

Excellent 12 year old whisky. Recommended.
    • Nose
Sweet sherry. Far off bonfire. Sulphur. Sea breeze. Fruit.
    • Taste
Sherry and holiday spices. Cereal and coffee cake. Smoke in the distance.
    • Finish
Nice and rather light. There is the sherry sulphur again. Creme brulee and black pepper.

Brilliant! A bump in the strength and lack of chillfiltering has made this whisky open up beautifully. A tip of the hat to the chaps at Bunnahabhain!
