  1. LeChiffre scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

What a great fabric, beautiful wine barrel aging. Complex, exciting and super balanced. For me it is slightly ahead of the very successful 19y Bowmore WID119782.
    • Nose
      91 91
the typical mineral-earthy Bowmore smoke lies directly in the nose; sweet-spicy; red berries (including raspberries, currants); Caramel; delicate oak wood
    • Taste
      91 91
oily velvety; the mineral-earthy smoke is mouth-watering; sweet with dark fruits and red berries; Caramel; to the sweetness as a harmonious counterpoint bitter chocolate and delicately tart oak; the alcohol is nicely integrated
    • Finish
      90 90
sweet-spicy; nutty notes emerge; delicate fruit notes; tart oak spice; smoky

A great bottling, despite the 21 year old wine barrel, the barrel is not unpleasant. The nose is the highlight here, pulsating, exciting and harmonious.

In comparison, the 19-year-old Amazon Exclusive is a bit lighter and fruity-sweeter in my memory; to put it the other way round, this 21-year-old version is stronger and spicier.
    • Nose
      93 93
warm smoke, chalky and mineral, herbal sauna, dried culinary herbs, fried figs, a smoky-spicy sweetness in the direction of caramel, marshmallow and Worchester sauce, some tannins, cranberry jam and the idea of an umami note (I feel like a chowder, like me she ate in Seattle), in between there is a pleasant maritime freshness. Great, harmonious nose with a beautiful play of aromas!
    • Taste
      90 90
Strong, sweet and tart start, pleasant texture on the palate, also here mineral-herbal smoke, with red fruits, sweet, almost sticky and also a bit musty (the boiled down berry compote from the very back in grandma's musty cellar), tart cocoa and that too Wood is now pushing something. The maritime freshness is also found on the palate, however, much more subtle than on the nose
    • Finish
      89 89
Medium to long, astringent, the tart aromas initially dominate here (spicy wood, tannins, hazelnut), but over time, sweet notes of caramel and red fruits also create space. And smoke, of course, there's that too.

Freshly opened - first impression: Nice wine maturation that goes well with Bowmore. I'm curious how it will develop in the bottle. Compared to the 19er from Amazon at the time, I can't see a sulfur note here.

  4. Danlow did not rate this whisky Expert Junior

The bottle does not contain any evidence of any staining or cold filtration.
Since the reference to the coloring is printed on other Bowmore bottles, it may not be present here after all, although the first dealer sold it with the reference to a coloring.

  5. Numwierum scored this whisky 90 points Expert Senior

Smell: Winegums, red berries, mineral, earthy and slightly salty, fine wood flavor, subtle herbs, a slight sweetness can be heard, caramel and burnt wood.
Taste: Sweet, heavy and almost creamy, red berries again, milk chocolate, toffee, the smoke is more intense in the mouth, earthy, white pepper, herbs and oak spice come through.
Finish: Long and warming, dry, cocoa, roasted nuts, smoke and charcoal.
Conclusion: surprising that the wine aromas do not get out of hand here after 21 years of maturation, but rather enter into a pleasant connection with the Bowmore character.
For me an absolutely successful bottling!

Today, 5 Bowmore in direct comparison:

88P - nose very very cool. In the taste unfortunately too spicy / herbal & dirty.

90-91P, depending on the shape of the day. Nice mix of old and new Bowie parts and the sherry is nicely balanced.

90P - wonderfully fruity, slightly smoky, and a nice long finish. At any rate, the least violets of all 5 today. Unfortunately not exciting enough to reach the 91P today.

90-91p. In terms of rating, I put it on the same level as the 21y Aston Martin because it suits my taste exactly. Slightly sweeter and less violet than the 21y AM. At the age of 15, however, he does not have the complexity for this.

Best nose of any Bowmore tried today. Extremely fruity and tops the Rumors 30y again in the nosing. Unfortunately, the violet notes dominate in the Taste, which do not suit a Bourbon Bowmore at all.

My conclusion, unfortunately I could not identify a clear winner. Except for the 21y Wine Cask, they are all very close.

Tasted at whisky show 2021, to me the wine cask maturation doesnt really do it as I get some cooked cabbage aromas

  8. WiltChamberlain scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

Overrated for sure. This is an average dram (which is the sad standard of Bowmore nowadays).
