  1. Cask1988 did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

STR casks surprised me before. This one I got to taste at my liquor store. In the shop it surprised me and gave me enough reasons wanting to further investigate and analyse this fellow. I mean, writing a tasting note and scream ‘hallelujah’ based on a quick 2cl is a little incorrect and inaccurate.
    • Nose
Initially it gives quite some sour flavors. Sour white grapes mostly. After that great sweet, spicy and intense flavors take their place. The spicy character I often get with Teaninich is rather assertive. Talking about reactivating the wood.. good job! Spices like vanilla, cinnamon and ginger show up. Fruitiness as in red appels and tangerines. But what keeps me busy is some kind of poor balance. I guess the wood has been activated very well by the treatment it got, but at the same time I keep having quite a few young and spirit-like flavors that disturb the nose a bit. Water and hand warmth add maturity and complexity to the nose. Flavors like wood polish, peach and yellow citrus join in.
    • Taste
Rich and quite a good balance! Dark and intense flavors as well as more smooth and sweet flavors. Again de sourness is present here. It complements the experience giving the palate more dimensions. It gets fatter and fatter body-wise. Water makes it smooth and gives it more sweet & fresh flavors. Like in fresh ginger, something like eucalyptus, cherry and strawberry.
    • Finish
Quite some young citrusy flavors show up in the finish! Lime, lemon peel and medium-sour tangerines is what comes to my mind. Especially that last one sticks around for quite a while! After adding water and giving it hand warmth more fresh (green) spices join the club. It adds complexity to the finish.

This, for me, is a perfect example of a whisky that has been bottled a little to early. The thing I miss the most here is stability and maturity. I guess a few extra years, maybe in a less active cask, would made this great instead of good. I’m happy that I took a sample to analyse it a bit more but I’m also happy that I didn’t buy a full bottle after a nice first meeting. It leaves me somewhat confused. So 6cl is enough for me.

Odour: german on the spicy side, caramelized vanilla, furniture polish, warming, alcohol present, eucalyptus, honey, youthful in the foreground

Taste: back on the spicy side, wood present, roasted caramel, medium-bodied. Reverberation with warming alcohol

Colour: dark copper, reddish core, medium water's edge, clear

Conclusion: It's fun to begin with, but overall a bit too one-dimensional and youthful... As "Cask 1988" quite rightly writes: Less active barrels and a little more maturing time would have been good here - the right systems are there...

The aroma is soft, pleasant, filled with fruit and confectionery tones - sour grapes, fresh peaches, honey, marshmallow, marshmallow, oak. I consider it (aroma) in this sample to be the strongest point.
The taste and finish are simpler, rougher - red currant, ginger bitterness, light cardboard tones.
In general, the whisky is good, but there is no desire to return to it.
