N: Typically coppery, becoming more and more fruity as an hour rolls past. In addition, we’ve wonder stuff such as peanut brittle, honey, a biscuitiness – Nice & Digestives for example,… That the spirit still talks so freely after 31 years is remarkable.

T: On the palate, it starts off well and further loosens up with time like a treat. Flavour-wise, we are talking biscuit-sweet/savoury butterscotch with a crisp coppery edge.

F: Again, typically Tormore, a quirky yet straight-ahead slightly reserved malt at times – in between a Linkwood and a Fettercairn if you will – becoming maltier whilst maintaining a slightly puckering spirity edginess.

C: Most engaging. This one showcases Tormore’s ability to retain its idiosyncratic form through to full maturity.

Nose: Very expressive, complex, full-bodied, fresh, lively, you can put it here to describe it. Another no-brainer is that it absorbs a lot of oak influences, luckily, the barrels are clean and vibrant. Rich oily, herbal, woody, sea salt, coconut wax and of course yellow fruit.

Drink: The expressiveness is still very good when drinking, the taste is clear, strong, well-structured, mango, loquat jam, then transferred to the woody spice, and finally the sweetness of licorice, which is very long.

Overall: The recent Bottlers have released a number of Tormores of Vintage 1990, which are reasonably priced and of very good quality.

The palate veers a little too much towards wood spices, but this Tormore 1990 31 Years from Whiskysponge provides a very satisfying overall experience.
    • Nose
Similar, yet very different from the TWA bottling I referenced just above. There's this warm apple compote again, but also creamy vanilla custard and grape must, as wel as a dusty, old school quality that is very charming. Just a touch of furniture polish and even some mushy peas.
    • Taste
Mature with plenty of ripe fruits like apricots, and apfelstrudel with warm vanilla sauce. A whiff of aniseed in the background, but also sandalwood, resin and some cracked black peppercorns.
    • Finish
Drying with notes of toffee, ripe apples and stewed pears. Medium in length.
