Without question: This is young. But I find it very clean. You can see the origin of the mash through the young distillate and don't stumble over the immaturity. But it is by no means delicate or too weak due to the drinking strength. I liked it for what it is.

No specially unpleasant but really unripe and too greenish malt, pretty harsh and pungent on palate. Not recommended.

This Ardnamurchan AD/07.21:05 is a good surprise and it feels slightly older than it is. The age shows a bit on the nose, with its strong malty notes, but the fruity character and the light peat do wonders to hide that youth and make the nose quite nice. On the palate, still a bit of youth, but honestly I don’t think it’s 3 years old, maybe 5 or 6? The 65% bourbon/35% sherry ratio is quite ‘visible’ on the palate as the bourbon cask-induced notes are slightly dominant, but with a nice integration of the flavours imparted by the sherry casks. Very good first experience with Ardnamurchan, I’ll have to try later and older batches.
    • Nose
Not that intense when the glass is still a few centimetres under the nose, but as you bring the glass closer, the nose quickly becomes prickly. The initial impression is of a lightly peated farmy side. The malt is very present on the nose, with different steps of its life, as you can get the cracked malted barley, the grist, and then you’re like having a sniff on top of the mash tun, then on the washback as they add the yeast. Then the fruits come through, with citrusy notes first, mango, pineapple and banana, dusted with vanilla. Hints of sulphurous notes that quickly disappear.
    • Taste
Feels slightly more peaty than the nose, but less smoky, if that makes sense. This is a bit herbal, peppery, the fake wasabi we have in Europe mixed with sweet soy sauce. The fruits are here too, with lemon, orange, grapefruit, pineapple and not-pine apple (sorry). Some ‘darker’ notes from the sherry casks as well with chocolate, hints of leather and wood furniture polish.
    • Finish
Long, on these herbal, peppery lemony notes with a bit of chocolate too, and maybe some menthol as well.

Nose - Crushed seashells, chalky/mineral, lemon cake/icing, lemon oils, beach bonfire

Taste - Citrus, little mint, creamy, smoked peach, hint of bbq sausages.
Sweet and smoky by the sea

    Conclusion from a blind tasting:
Not an old whisky, probably between 4 and 8 years old, stored in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks, no strong smoke, but noticeable. Most likely a mix of unpeated and peated malt. I bet boldly and completely impartially on a whisky from a relatively young distillery, probably Ardnamurchan.
    • Nose
      82 82
Juicy pears, peeled apples, peach iced tea, light grapes, vanilla, hints of smoke.
    • Taste
      84 84
Light fruits such as white apricots, ripe gooseberries, honeydew melons, white chocolate, a little strawberries, notes of campfire smoke, the alcohol comes in a drinking strength of around 46%.
    • Finish
      83 83
The light fruit notes fade away in a light sweetness, the gentle smoke remains subtle and medium-length on the palate and on the cheeks, the tongue becomes slightly dry.

  8. Tom na Gruagaich scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

A young but very stringent whisky with a clear, distinctive aroma profile. Nice dram.
    • Nose
Fresh and fruity with a subtle smoke and soot note. The youth can be smelled. But the overall profile of melon and citrus with soot pleases.
    • Taste
The nose continues in the mouth. Fruity, sooty, rather dry, still a bit peppery.
    • Finish
The finish is somewhat sweet and fruity. Before dry smoke and sooty dominate again

I compare this with the o4 (182983). Small tasting. Actually .... turns out .... pampering.
    • Nose
      83 83
Smell actually gives green apples. Less complex than the 04. Well the out and what, but less prominent. Very tasty, but could be even more if the years were allowed to last longer.
    • Taste
      85 85
Immediately sharp. Pepper. Slightly spicy....although that does increase. The malt again. The 04 has more, but I like this a bit more. Still equal appreciation
    • Finish
      86 86
The finish is longer than with the 04. Also very warm and pleasant. Fortunately lasts a little longer. Nice round taste. Very balanced. Crazy that the nose is so different.

Interesting for a first test. The positive thing is that the malt opens in the glass and does not stand still.
    • Nose
Immediately not very pleasant - raw dough with raw potatoes. After 10 minutes it becomes more interesting - the declared peat appears. This is accompanied by citrus candies, raspberries and freshly cut grass.
    • Taste
In taste, peat is felt immediately, only the impression is not of the sea, but rather of a swamp. Same lollipops, white pepper
    • Finish
Medium on swamp slime and pepper.

Heavy and oily spirits, judging by the broad and thick stems.
Oddly enough, a very good whisky. Let's put it this way: a rough village commoner, but with a school education and a diligent study in elementary school!
    N:21 T:21 F:21 B:21
    • Nose
An abundance of tones of barley porridge, honey sweetness, citruses, ginger, metallic copper tones that somehow reminded me of the old Strathisla 12, bread crumb, quite interesting, in fact
    • Taste
Expectedly not hewn, but sweet and not alcoholic, all the same bready tones and notes of barley porridge, metallic motifs similar to copper, fleshy and dense, oily, sweet yellow fruits, sweetness 7 out of 10, black pepper, ginger
    • Finish
      Bitterness, yellow fruits, astringency, tannins

    • Taste
      85 85
Sweet, peaty, spicy, salty. Honey, malty and young
    • Finish

Opens immediately the door to a herb garden with rosemary and thyme. But it's a mediterranean garden with lemon and grapefruit trees under a shroud of gentle smoke.
    • Taste
      85 85
Gently and soft it slides onto the tongue with herbs again, but also sour apple, mirabelle, hints of corn and spicy wood, completed by smooth smokiness.
    • Finish
      83 83
Surprisingly spicier you would expect from such a young whisky but it's also a fresh and slightly metallic spiciness. Is staying quite long.

  25. olegborgol scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

The aroma is unexpectedly boiled carrots, boiled potatoes "in uniform", some fruit and herbs, vanilla, lemonade. The taste is quite rounded with hints of peat, salty, peppery. The finish is not very expressive, but not empty. I think there will be a good future in the older releases: 21,5-21,5-21-21

A young whisky with good roots, but also a lot of rings for more complexity and a nicer finish.
    • Nose
      84 84
Not that uninteresting nose: fresh, vanilla, citrus notes, a little smoke, but especially at the beginning also slightly sulphurous tones and therefore a bit out of round.
    • Taste
      83 83
Little complex, little noticeable from the sherry casks, but some youthful heat
    • Finish
      81 81
Rapidly fading, flat, becoming a bit bland.

    (TASTED BLIND)
NOSE: Sweet, perfumed peat, a bit ashy, with a mild/sweet maritime side. bourbon cask notes of dried yellow fruits (banana, mango, pineapple) and vanilla. Later conserved and fresh lemons as well. Quite elegant nose, reminding me most of all of Ardbeg so far. (90p).
TASTE: In the arrival: lemon. On the mid palate ashes, lemon, cold fresh sea water, fresh green olive brine. A little sweetness in the fruitiness but overall it is dry. And a little salty. (89p).
FINISH: Lingering lemon juice and fresh brine with a touch of freshly crushed black pepper. (89p).
OVERALL: A lovely Islay malt. Not hard hitting but pure, clean and "long" in the mouth. The ashy/lemony nose and the lemony/briny palate appear very Ardbegian to me. Careful with water, this is not a big swimmer. Total score 89 points.

N: 50/50 peated/unpeated,…. the peat is present but its approach is from the side.

T&F: Youthful [duh],… and in a good way. A few references to other distilleries ensue.

C: Really excellent young malt. [EDIT: this is release #5 that I recently tried before [WLP85]. One more mark today. All eyes on Ardnamurchan.

DJ, who appeared in a recent on-location vPub, tells us that this is comprised of “plenty of 5 & 6 yo malt”, with a spirit mix of 50:50 peated & unpeated spirit and a cask maturation ratio of 65% bourbon and 35% sherry casks.

N: Incredibly accomplished whisky in contrast to many of the new generation 3yo+ malts being released with frequency at this moment in time. With zero immaturity showing, this is a well-rounded straw-like barley-forward single malt with decent weight and suggested [phenolic] complexities that will no doubt evolve as the years roll along.

T: Idiosyncratic greasy dry-toasted barley-faithful arrival continuing through with a relaxed ‘minerallic’ softness. It’s also [cracked] peppery, in a very desirable way too.

F: Good shape/form throughout. The peatiness shows strongly at the tail with a light ‘fush-fush’ vanilla < creaminess, the finish fairly long and ever-faithful to its straw-to-honeyed trajectory.

C: You can see this one still improving at 10+ years.

fruity on the nose with a slight sweetness. In the taste full spiciness of pepperiness / chilli on the tongue ... if you like it.
Somehow he has a "dirty" character and reminds a little of Springbank .... oh dear, the next hype.
    [86 - 82 = good whisky -> get (second) bottle? Perhaps...]
It is actually not bad, but it does not pick me up personally because it is too one-dimensional for me - even in the post-test.
    • Nose
      84 84
At first fruity, slightly sweet apple, peach and pear, then a light smoky note from a charred barrel comes along with me. It makes it look kind of "dirty" and that reminds me of Springbank.
Powdered sugar, toffee and a light vanilla aroma are added. Slightly spiced nutmeg and a little pepper in the background. (83/100)
[Post-test: it also looks slightly perfumed / floral, rose water; a little more malt comes through now; these grades are gone again and the "dirty" character for me comes through again (=> 84/100)]
    • Taste
      83 83
initially creamy-viscous mouthfeel. Hui, then the pepper with a chilli heat on the tongue; I would not have expected 46.8%. Here, too, the "dirty" somehow reminds of Springbank. [Post test: slightly more fruitiness than in the first test; the sharpness is still there]
Second sip: much more pleasant, more spice from cinnamon and nutmeg come through, the fruits are also slightly more noticeable. But the malt burns down my esophagus, which you couldn't expect.
Phew, the sharpness is there again - whoever is on it can access it here, but a sample is enough for me for now.
This - for me - youthful sharpness is nothing I look for in a whisky; but everyone has to decide for themselves. [Post-test: the sharpness is there again, but is no longer as sharp as it used to be - shape of the day ...]; otherwise as usual. 82/100 => 83/100
    • Finish
      80 80
very short finish. There might be a bit of fruit left over, but that's about it. Slight hazelnut moments in the late finish on the tongue and on the palate; (unripe) hazelnut gets a little stronger over time. Still rather unspectacular for me.
[Post test: the charred wood / barrel char from the nose is a bit more present, note remains]
