- Kyrö Malt Rye Whisky 47.2%.
30ml sample at home, Oct 2021.
Pale yet dark golden orange, if that makes sense. Or a pale shade of amber. I haven’t seen information on the types of cask used here but I guess the Finnish climate won’t be helping the whisky to draw loads of colour from even the most active cask, especially at a young age.
Aroma is very grain-dominant. Doughy. Uncooked rye bread dough and churros. Fried pastries. Some pale wood.
Body is fairly oily.
Taste is again doughy, but salty and floral up front too, leans towards being dry but there is a nice sweet 'n' salty vibe going on. The mid-palate feigns towards becoming watery but the alcohol heat rises back up on the finish, bringing more of the grain character. Toasted rye bread lingers. Light char on the finish.
Really interesting to try this grain-led rye. The casks haven’t done loads to this one – they've just lent enough toasty sweetness to round things out. It’s a solid enjoyable rye whisky. 3.525/84
- Very good rye that integrates the peat smoke well.
Rye bread and dry-sweet peat smoke. Barbecue. Smoked fish. Very pleasant.
Creamy start. Roog bread again with a fine smoke. Barbecue sweetness. Smoked fish. In addition, pleasant seasoning.
Medium long. Sweetness, seasoning, peat smoke, barbecue, rye.
