Nose: restrained, dry white wine, grape skins, cereals, sugared almonds, big red chewing gum, a little herbal and spirity.

Mouth: chewy, malty, cask strength certainly, more sugar coated nuts, more herbaceous notes with some orchard fruits.

It’s young and feisty and very distillate led.

I really like this one. It definitely has its own style, making it very interesting. And while the ABV is over 60% it’s dangerously drinkable. Tasty stuff indeed!
    • Nose
Subtle peat, very light. A touch of vanilla custard and there is some cotton sugar as well. This is followed by hints of oatmeal. Lemons. Milk chocolate and a faint floral note in the back. It’s very gentle but rather nice.
    • Taste
Soft smoke and slightly ashy. Then zesty notes from limes and lemons. Chocolate. Ginger and also unripe pears and a hint of green apples. Later also a resin and a touch of pine needles.
    • Finish
Long with resin, ginger and fresh mint.

It's so great to explore good single malt whisky made outside of Scotland. Sure, Myken adheres to Scottish production regimes, but it has a style entirely of its own. A bold pick by Berry Bros & Rudd.
    • Nose
Soft and gentle with a farmy backbone of malt and porridge, followed by notes of moss, seaweed and a touch of mulch. There's a very light, herbal smoke in the background. Just a whiff of sage and vanilla custard.
    • Taste
Thick, oily mouthfeel while the peat is much more pronounced. Charcoal and tar, more in the Ardmore realm than heavily-peated Islay. Also charred lemon peel, some beeswax, a whiff of ash and some chocolate. Surprisingly, no water is needed, but I'll add some just out of curiosity. It brings out a spicy, nutty side.
    • Finish
Lingering spices, menthol, resin and herbs. Finally a touch of honey.

Myken 2017-2021, 61.4% alc. "First Fill American Standard Barrel".

Nose: Strong and very spicy at first, followed by fruit aromas. Citrus fruits, plum cake, apricot jam, grass and cereals. Completely removes a smoky aroma.

Palate: Different from the nose, less fruit and more smoke. Limes and lemon juice, followed by a campfire on the beach, minerally salty aromas, a hint of iodine and a little ash.

Finish: Long and warming, follows the palate.

Conclusion: I am really surprised and really excited. The smoke flavors added a lot to the complexity, really nice whisky. 87/100 points (2021)
