This Balmenach, bottled by Signatory for Kirsch Import in the summer of 2021, differs from the usual Signatory sherry finishes, which are extremely dark when bottled. This whisky is rich golden and thus has a pleasant color that gives hope for a not overloaded sherry finish.

    • Nose
The nosing is a bit indifferent at first. This is by no means an overloaded sherry finish. Because here the sherry is not present at first. The aroma is rather tart with sour fruits, young aromas also come out of the glass. Over time, the whisky becomes a little softer, then light chocolate notes can be seen in the background, the sour fruits are accompanied by damp wood, which is very pleasant and not musty. Overall, however, the aroma remains very restrained to weak.
    • Taste
This restrained impression is also confirmed in the taste. Here the whisky is dry with a distinct bitterness. There is also a light chocolate note here, but it is not persistent. The alcohol is despite the 46.0% vol. palpable, owing to the weak aromas that fail to encapsulate it.
    • Finish
The aftertaste is correspondingly short and expressionless. There is too little that stays in the mouth and the bitterness outweighs the pleasant aromas.

The middle ground would be nice, but it seems to be difficult to find. Yes, I am annoyed by the overloaded and overpriced color wonders. But here they simply did barrel recycling. The sherry cask was not able to deliver much in the finish, so that the bitterness prevails in the end and destroys the delicate residual aromas. Unfortunately, the whisky does not have much to offer anymore and is therefore ambitiously priced for the approx. 60 € for which it is still available in March 2022.

This Balmenach is not bad and also has nice aspects. But for real enjoyment it offers too little. If you are looking for a nice sherry maturation, you will not find it here.
