    SMWS notes:

Fruitcake in an old theatre    Cask number 85.21

The nose was evocative of times gone by – “grandma‟s syrup sponge pudding” someone said; wool tapestries and leather upholstered seats, soft leather gloves and sweet tobacco; fruitcake and preserved plums.

The palate was sweet, creamy and fudgey with spicy Madeira cake served with crème caramel. “An old still house” the Whisky scientist said.

The reduced nose brought Jaffa cakes and dusty marshmallows; Jack fruits and sour green apples.

Water softened and dried out the palate revealing ginger fruitcake and Irish soda bread. The Poet was transported to old theatre seats in Orkney with metal frames. Richness from this Elgin distillery with wormtubs.

Drinking tip:    A cosy night in as autumn begins

    Colour: Tuscan olive oil

    Summary note on the bottle:
On the nose syrup sponge pudding, fruitcake and wool tapestries and the scent of sweet tobacco ; in reduction, Jaffa cakes and dusty marshmallows. The neat palate has Madeira cake and crème caramel; water brings ginger, soda bread, and old leather theatre seats.

I didn`t buy a bottle of this but tasted it in London. On my tasting I didn`t pick up any sulphur at all. I found it to be sweet and creamy with sponge pudding being flavour I most associated with the whisky. Elegant and classy, though not particularly complex. Am going to mark it on my tasting.

    • Nose
Sadly, over a period of a few months, sulphur has indeed surfaced and is becoming more apparent every week.

It is throughout the experience - nose, palate and finish.

If you have a bottle of this, drink it fast before it gets the opportunity to  exhibit this serious flaw

I very much like Glen Elgin and this is a good one. Not a hint of the oh-so-prevalent Society sulphur in this sherry cask.
    • Nose
Sweet and toffee-ish, with a trace of lemon behind (elusive though - sometimes there, sometimes not).
A little faint mustiness (not in a bad way) that I think must be what the Society's notes are referring to when they say old leather. After several minutes this comes to the fore.
A few drops of water soften the musty notes altogether and bring the slightest trace of a floral tone.
    • Taste
Sweet, sweet Glen Elgin fudgey flavours (for once I agree with the Society note).
      None of the mustiness here.
    • Finish
The old leather bound books hinted at by the mustiness in the nose are at the forefront. Quite spicy too.
