Nose

Deep fruity, oranges galore, with melted sugar, honey - more tropical fruits, vanilla, touch of wood - very fresh and intensive - I just can't get enough!

Taste

Citrusy and lots of different other fruits, perfect balance of oak wood,  a subtle sweetness and some vanilla notes. It is waxy and oily but though fresh and full bodied.

Finish

Long warm and still fruity - no water needed - it's so smooth.

Comments

Really superb - definitely in the top 3 of the best Glenrothes I had so far.

Full bodied, fruity and sweet nose. On the palate it is very well balanced between oak wood, oranges, vanilla and honey. It's pretty oily and smooth and has a superb sweetness. The finish is long and pleasant. This one certainly belongs to the top class Glenrothes.

Cask #3808 was an ex-sherry butt, and gave this malt a nose full of vanilla, plums, dates, and toasted oak. The taste is spicy and thick with notes of Christmas cake, orange peel, plums, raisins, and brown sugar. The finish is long and sweet with tropical fruits and a touch of brown sugar.

Jim Murray's Whisky Bibel 5th Edition

The Glenrothes 1979 Single Cask no. 3808 db (96) n24 a near faultless nose with the clarity of the fruit, presumably sherry (though maybe not first fill), is enough to bring a tear to the eye: a sweet nougat kick is matched by rich, spiced sultana, the well-aged bourbon: absolutely something for everyone; t24 the malt dissolves on impact letting in several shockwaves of spice; almost brutally fruit yet the honeyed seem is a thick one; f24 long, the most playful vanillas and with a confidence bordering on arrogance as the spices re-ignite, as if telling you that it'll end when it feels like it...not when it theoretically should...meanwhile, the very lightly smoked honey and burned fudge just go on and on and on... b24 la pearl of a malt that has me scratching my head in wonder. Although from a single cask, there are elements in this which are pure bourbon and others which are pure sherry - in every sense. In the end, it doesn't much matter because the tastebuds are almost too overwhelmed to take in all that is on offer. Stunning 55,2%
