Whisky reviews for Glentauchers 1999 GM

  1. LeChiffre scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

Beautiful bottling, more reminiscent of old-school. You have to like the noticeable wood influence, I think it's great. Judging by the profile I believe in a full sherry aging in European oak. Something completely different from the countless modern finish stories.
Such a beautiful 21-year-old sherry bottling is fine these days at the price of 190 euros.

this one is cloyingly sweet, usualy i like sweet whisky, but sweetness has to be balances with other compounds, this feels like additive sugars, slightly chemical, a lot of wine barrel, nice but... not enough
    • Nose
      88 88
Sweet, sherry, old books, dust, dark fruits, sourness, wee bit of sulfur
    • Taste
      86 86
sweet, fruity, vinous, with a little sulfur here as well, a bit biting, some kind of chemical aroma
    • Finish
      87 87
rather tart, relatively short aftertaste, sweet wine, a lot of sweetness

I think the nose is really good. I don't really like that wine-like mouthfeel in my mouth. Certainly a good whisky, but I don't think so.
    • Nose
Sherry, of course. Here it is a mixture of sweet and sour dark fruits. More like wild berries. Also reminds a bit of the red pasta Frutta Dinger from Haribo. Sloe liqueur. Some sorrel. Walnuts. In addition tart, yet somewhat juicy oak tones. Some nutmeg.
    • Taste
First nice and sweet. Forest honey. Bread with fruits. Then it's a bit inharmonious for me, because the sherry and the wood don't seem so well integrated to me. The mouthfeel is partly similar to that of a fairly dry wine. Accordingly, it will also be drier. Grape seeds and peel. Black tea. Dry wood notes.
    • Finish
Fruit acid. Minimal licorice. Cocoa. Tree bark.

    • Nose
Cough syrup, creamy, crema catalana, malt, raisins drenched in sweet cherry liquor, sherry cask for sure olo or px? what if it was cream sherry? dark fruit, wood polish, European oak, boozy chocolate sweets, leathery?
    • Taste
Very juicy, haven't had such juicy sherry bomb in a while, raisins, plums, jam, baked berry pastry baskets, carmel, mollases, allspice, toffee, madeira cake, after a sip sandalwood shows up on a nose
    • Finish
Long, nutty, charming dram, good value for money

Great, honest whisky from a 1st fill sherry barrel with an abundance of flavors and complex wood notes. Exactly my loot scheme - December 18, 2021
    • Nose
      89 89
Strong, intense nose with dusty, earthy tones, light red fruits stand out first, pomegranate, rose hips, blood orange, baked apple, caramelized walnuts, intense malt and roasted aromas, over time the dark red fruit notes such as cherry, blackberry, raisin appear , dark chocolate
    • Taste
      89 89
Sweet, spicy, immediately astringent, dusty, leathery, woody, aromatic, dark chocolate, is getting stronger, spicier and more oily, great woody-tart mouthfeel
    • Finish
      88 88
Long and dry, spicy, tart, beautifully matured oak aroma, leather, chocolate, wine gum, liquorice

  14. MrDvorak scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

The aroma is dominated by intense notes of dark dried fruits and old furniture lacquer. The taste is full of nuances of cocoa, milk chocolate and black raisins. The finish is tannic, long-lasting, chocolate-peppery.

An excellent Glentochers, in which the first place (as is often the case with GM) comes out with a smartly selected barrel, and not the profile of the distillery itself, beautiful.

    RATING: 89pts - | 87 - 89 (B +) → Great | - Always nice to have a bottle of this.

You have to like this contrast between strong sweet wood and subsequent tart wood. Then this is top quality. To me that makes it a bit unbalanced, others might say complex.
    • Nose
      89 89
Dark fruity sherry with wine gummy bears, lots of sweetness and red berries. The alcohol is noticeable but not unpleasant. The hogshead delivers lots of wood and dark caramel notes.
    • Taste
      86 86
Very sweet, almost liqueur-like. Then a lot of wood and drying out very quickly. The wood irons over all other flavors. Very leathery, becoming tart. Herbs and dark chocolate come out.
    • Finish
      86 86
The wood stays tart again with the second sip. Walnut skin, leather and the oak remain on the medium-length finish

Cinnamon, varnish, and a lot of oak. The taste is concentrated sweet, inky, with cayenne pepper and cinnamon. With a luscious sweetness. All this goes away, leaving a luscious sweetness.

Cinnamon, varnish, and a lot of oak. Behind these tones, the rest can no longer be made out: one can only guess.

[This is an exceptional whisky for this price. Highly complex.]

Update 01/31/2022: Bottle develops negatively after opening. Loses complexity and becomes too syrupy in taste. Too bad.

Update 03/28/2022: It must have been an off-day, today the whisky is just as good as I rated it after the first tasting. I am now increasing my rating again.

LeChiffre's rating fits very well. I still have additional notes of nuts on my nose. The wood notes, however, are very present.
