Quite a pale dram, which jumps fresh into the nose when pouring.

I would have loved to celebrate it because I like the distillery and the story (malting myself) is good. The sample will probably not be replaced by a large bottle.
    • Nose
      84 84
Light southern fruits, tropical, banana, brown sugar and light wood. The alcohol can only be perceived with the nose deep in the glass.
Overall, however, my nose is too pointed. Hence the reluctance to score.
    • Taste
      83 83
Creamy sweetness with intense alcoholic tingling on the tip of the tongue. Full-bodied with wood freight. Underneath there is something purple and flowery that I can't get hold of.
    • Finish
      82 82
Darkening wood. Medium length. Nothing to remember tomorrow

Golden. Taste: Fad, vanilla, sweetness, spicy, pepper. Great

  5. Lorion scored this whisky 74 points Connoisseur

Unspectacular. A successful palate. 74 points.
    • Nose
Fresh, grassy. Vanilla. Quite a bit bulky.
    • Taste
Sweeter than expected. Woody vanilla, mild lemon.
    • Finish
      Medium length, sweet.

I appreciated the chance to try a bottle that celebrated BenRiach’s usage of their own floor maltings at their Speyside distillery. Using Bourbon and Virgin Oak casks, you’re able to try and discern in a more “pure” form, what BenRiach’s distillate tastes like (without any fortified wine influences, etc.). This BenRiach 2012 – Malting Season – First Edition is decent, light and generally enjoyable. It doesn’t taste watered down (the 48.7% ABV feels like a good choice here), but the flavors aren’t really standout, either.

With it retailing in the ~$80 U.S. range, for a 9 year old, it feels a touch pricey for the taste. Their core lineup of BenRiach The Original Ten, Smoky Ten, The Original Twelve, and Smoky Twelve (all hoving in the ~$50 - $60 U.S. price range) feels like a much better value and has more flavor / enjoyability.
    • Nose
      62 62
Apples, vanilla, green grapes, honey, toasted sugar. Rather shy on the nose.
    • Taste
      67 67
Medium coating mouthfeel, creamy, vanilla, apples, honey drizzled on granola, cereal, light ginger, nicely integrated.
    • Finish
      61 61
Medium, with a tapering light ginger spice, some dusty apples, orchard fruits, a bit spicy on the finish surprisingly.

Loved the mouthfeel, nothing like the rest in the Benriach range.
    • Nose
Immediate thoughts are maltiness galore, am I being lead by the name? It's oaty, a box of biscuits or a bowl of quakers. There's also some sweetness here, barley sugar with a slight hint of molasses. There's a fruitiness in the back, typical Benriach apples and pears.
    • Taste
Very oily and mouth coating, a different feel from other Benriachs in the range. Barley sugar immediately hits the tongue, we're back on the cereal and biscuit notes with an added layer of vanilla. Here there's some virgin oak influence showing, slight spiciness on the tongue.
    • Finish
Finish is back on raw material, malt and barley with a touch of brown sugar.

At the start, you can smell the virgin barrels, dry wood, whitewashed earth, with a hint of vaporous smoke. Then the fruits rise and we are on pleasant, dynamic Bourbon, Mirabelle plums on a bed of creamy vanilla, a pinch of salt. But there are also cereals, barley and wheat on a sunny day, and roasted almonds. The whole is friendly. On the palate, always friendly, honey, stracciatella ice cream, plums, juicy pears, it's sweet, quite smooth and balanced. Some spices, cumin, nutmeg, cinnamon. Fairly long finish, peppery, sandy, cola, white grapes.

    NOSE
Honied fruit, vanilla taffy, Banana Quik, malt and a touch spirity.

Not a whole lot going on here, it comes through super light and airy.

    PALATE
Hay-like malt, Banana Quik, honey, dried fruit, nuts and vanilla taffy notes with a touch of spice and wax.

Heavier than the aroma but, again, quite light and airy. I’m just not getting a ton on the delivery and I have to really take my time.

    FINISH
Medium -> Banana Quik, vanilla and wax fade to cinnamon-heavy spiced nuts.

There's a fruitiness that's lovely, but the vanilla and oak can be a bit dominant at times.
    • Nose
There's certainly a nice maltiness as well as a good amount of vanilla, which provides a base for stone fruits like peach, but also a tinge of sugar-coated strawberry as well as poached pears and baked apples. Finally a whiff of cooked broccoli and bran.
    • Taste
A decent mouthfeel with a fair amount of new oak as well as nutmeg and allspice, followed by baked bananas, crème caramel and mild notes of orange marmalade and apricots. Ending on a tinge of fennel.
    • Finish
Creamy with notes of yellow cake and banana, as well as lingering spices.

Old school malt, creamy and fruity. Lots of sweet spices, delicate nuttiness, all in perfect harmony. Very drinkable

Terroir Whisky? Jumping on Bruichladdich's Bandwagon?
It was quite a good dram tbh, youngish and off balance with harshness that rather comes from virgin oak
