Tomintoul is also more of a second tier distillery, but has its own core range. Michel Reick bottled this bottling in his Best Dram series after a finish in 1st fill Amarone Barrique. Amarone, a heavy, aromatic, dry red wine from the Valpollicella area, is now one of the most popular finish casks. The color is a beautiful golden tone, perhaps a delicate pink hue from the wine barrel is visible.

    • Nose
On the nose it is difficult to access at first, the wine note is present, but has a sour note of fermentation. The alcohol is noticeable. With a little water the aroma becomes nicer, there is now also a hint of aniseed, some cinnamon and the wine in a wine gum note. The whole thing is lined with vanilla.
    • Taste
The alcohol is also more than strong in taste and does not let the aromas come through. It gets better with a little water and a wine note unfolds, which is not very pronounced. There is little fruit in the taste, the whisky is rather dry.
    • Finish
The finish is not very pronounced and the woody aroma comes more from a bourbon cask that is no longer very active and therefore remains in the background.

The Amarone barrel didn't really have a lasting impact, even though it was 1st fill. At 15 years old, the whisky should have stronger aromas. It stays too much on the alcohol side, develops dryness and the flavors are more of a hint of what they could be. It cannot really meet expectations, which may also be due to the starting distillate.
