Ardbeg Wee Beastie 5 Year Old was matured for 5 years in bourbon cask and Oloroso sherry. The phenolics content of the whisky is 55 PPM and has not been submitted to the cold filtration process. Young and wild.

So for me, this Ardbeg is unexpectedly little peaty or smoky, both in the nose and in the mouth.
Rather watery or mild in the mouth. A beast smells and tastes different to me. Light years away from an Octomore aged 5 years in cask.
Still ok for under €40, but I imagined something completely different under the Wee Beastie.
    • Nose
      85 85
Sweetness, liquorice, liquorice, little smoke, salty, iodine, sweet and sour red apple/cider, menthol, malty - bready, followed by blossom honey and some creme brulee. A white wine aroma in the background
    • Taste
      84 84
Mild, even watery, aniseed, light smoke (somewhat medicinal), salty yet casually sweet.
Liquorice, pepper, hardly any fruit, if at all a sweet and sour apple, slightly bitter like black tea with a herbal mixture.
    • Finish
      84 84
Maximum medium length, slightly peppery, again salt, liquorice and maritime, there is rather little smoke. The malty and bready remains.

Ardbeg 5 years, "Wee Beastie", 47.4% alc. Original bottling (2021). Expansion: Bourbon and sherry casks (Oloroso)

Nose: Sweet and smoky, slightly acidic at the same time. Gooseberries, sourdough, lemon cake, lots of tar and peat smoke resonate with it. In addition, a light vanilla and a lot of sea water, some flotsam and also rusty metal. Also pear candies, but the sweetness only lingers briefly, the smoke and the tart citrus fruits keep pushing forward. After a while I find resin, mustard seeds and children's liquorice, the vanilla becomes stronger.

Palate: Hugely sweet at first, then the smoke comes in like a wave and becomes quite engaging. Lemon glaze and limoncello, some soft apricot and honeydew melon. Now the smoke takes over, some seaweed and iodine, has a slightly medicinal effect, plus stale salt water. Mustard in the background again and a hint of mint chocolate.

Finish: Medium to long, the sweetness disappears from the palate and the smoke lasts longer. The mint chocolate accompanies a little.

Conclusion: Honest 5 years of maturation and from my point of view an increase to An Oa. I can't quite understand the name of the Ardbeg because I'm still looking for the little beast, but maybe the emphasis should be on "small"? This bottling definitely doesn't have to hide, we have a pleasant and complex Ardbeg with a great price/performance ratio. This whisky definitely puts some of the annual limited releases in the shade. 87/100 points (2022).

  9. KB201 did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

The Ardbeg Wee Beastie is the latest addition to the range.
Good value 5 year old Islay. Untamed smoke, tar, pepper and dark chocolate.
