My new favorite daily dram. Wonderful sweet and fresh with the sharp edges of the islays mixed in the blend.

Replacing the 2021 discontinued Oak Cross, Orchard House is the latest addition to the Compass Box core range. Ripe fruits are the main theme, and the nose delivers what the label promised: apples, pears and vanilla, mixed with peaches, biscuits and honey. More of the same on the palate, before it turns spicy and slightly dry in the development, enriched by unripe banana, pineapple and ginger. Lemon zest, grapefruit and herbal notes subside in the medium finish, and I can even hear the Caol Ila whispering. A rock-solid sipper for long summer evenings.

Manchester Whisky Club, June 2022, Bang for your Buck Tasting. Very fruity and reasonable value for money. Not much complexity.

A quite fruity and elegant blend at the beginning, but you can feel the youthfulness and the complexity could be a bit better. In addition, a rather unpleasant bitterness, especially in the finish.

    Batch L29 10 21

Nose: fresh and slightly sparkling, orchard (pears, apples, peaches, a few grapes), blossom honey, somewhat waxy, some powdered sugar, some vanilla

Palate: pleasing and waxy, fruit basket (apple, pear, peach), some vanilla, a touch of smoke, slightly metallic and acidic

Finish: short, waxy, apple, peach, slightly metallic

Rating: the name says it all - a beautiful orchard in summer: fruit basket, blossom honey, waxy and a little vanilla. The youth is noticeable too, but at the price this is an all-around great summer whiskey for a relaxing evening al fresco. Fits.

    86/100 or 6/10

Ohhhh Kudos! What a true delight. Orchard house it’s called and orchard house is exactly what it is! What a fantastic summertime dram this is!
    • Nose
It’s not particularly complicated but it’s damn flavorful! Freshness, sweetness and juiciness allover the place! W wee sour citrus note as well. Lovely orchard fruits like juicy red apples, ripe pear, apricot, some mild lemon juice as in lemon ice tea and juicy oranges. If fruity whiskies are not your cup of ‘tea’, leave this to it then.
    • Taste
Despite of being just around 8 years old and giving 46% ABV, it is highly palatable. It is smooth, very tasteful, quite gentle and softly tingling my tongue. The balance is great. It’s rather vibrant and keeps me busy with flavors of lime, unripe pear, sweet&sour apples and green banana peel. Somehow it reminds me a bit of tequila beer.
    • Finish
The finish is gentle and well equipped with some pleasant sweet spiced flavors. It offers me quite some vanilla and cinnamon. Rather fudgy as well. The fruit is less dominant in the finish.

I take a deep bow for CB. I never had much to do with CB’s marketing jibberjabber with expensive labels and transparency paid by the costumer but this is just very, very good. A worthy BFYB. For an very honest price you buy a hell of a summer dram! Highly recommended!

N: Very fresh, pears, apples (green mostly but some red too), peaches, vanilla, some cinnamon and spices in the background with some very distant oak. Surprisingly I can find the peat from Caol Ila, it's pretty present.

P: Apples, pears, baking spices, cinnamon, strong vanilla and toffee comes now, the peat is very unnoticable here

    F: Medium-long, very pleasant

Note: Opens up a bit with water and the peat just disappears.

    88/100 --> GREAT

  20. Whisky Hamster scored this whisky 83 points Expert Senior

Not too shabby but can't deliver the fruity and promising nose on the palate that is less fruity and more spicy, especially in the aftertaste. I'd rather have the Spice Tree - despite its name - for a few Euros more.

The whiskey didn't open up to me on the first try at an online regulars' table. But since he got away very well in the lap and I didn't think he was bad per se, he got another chance on a quiet evening.
You can really get involved with the dram and the whiskey also has a lot to offer for the palate and nose.
All in all a very good blended malt for a reasonable price.

This is a very, very good summer dram and really bang for your bucks. It wears its name perfectly. You’re drinking a bowl of fruits and for the price asked for a bottle, it’s a no-brainer. Buy one, open it, and drink it. It’s great in the summer but honestly, it’s still winter at the time of writing and I’m enjoying it quite a lot too.
    • Nose
      86 86
Extremely fruity. Immediately, apple and pear take the lead, with peach, pineapple and orange and lemon zest in the background. There is a buttery note as well as honey, vanilla and distant notes of wood.
    • Taste
      88 88
Fruity again on the palate, but with a spices kick that was not on the nose. Apple and pear have the lead on the palate like previously on the nose, and are joined with candied ginger, grapefruit and roasted pineapple. A bit of wood, some icing sugar, honey, cough syrup and liquorice and mint.
    • Finish
      84 84
Apples, peppermint, a bit of oak, honey, quite long.

Sweet, light, fruity (pears, apples, bit of peaches), slightly minerally (the Linkwood talking?). Little bith of alcohol on the nose but that's just a small point of critique. All in all a nice malt and very well put together. Only at the very end do you get a hint of the Caol Ila - just a hint of peat, and that only came when the bottle was open for a bit already.

Compass Box, a Scottish whiskymaker and owned by an American who says he has no secret when blending whisky. One of my friends said that you pay too much for a fancy label and transparency; I have the intension to find out. Starting with this one.
    • Nose
      87 87
Initially quite closed, but some 20 minutes of hand-warming does the trick. When opening up, you enter a meadow full of green fruit. A field full of pears and especially apples. In between the trees of green fruit, a bouquet of flowers. In the far distance a mellow sea breeze from Islay bringing in a light touch and influence of Caol Ila.
    • Taste
      87 87
Although I mainly drink cask strength whiskies, this one has quite a full body. The 46% abv is ok, but I guess this would have been better when bottled somewhere between 46 and 50%. Slightly waxy. Strong arrival of herbs and oaky flavors. Fruity flavors are drawn to the back. Tickling spices on the tongue.
    • Finish
      86 86
Pretty long finish. Dominant spices in the finish. In the far end maybe slightly watery and dry.

Conclusion: good start of my quest on the Compass Box catalogue. Great P/Q ratio. I am pretty sure this one blows quite some entry level single malt whiskies off the table.

Nose: As the name suggests, a lot of garden fruit with apples, ringlets, peaches and a hint of lemon, lemon drops with a subtle note of yeast, pancake batter, panettone and subtle oak, vanilla, hazelnuts and marzipan.

In the taste, honey and wax join the aromas of the nose (Clynelish?)

In the finish then a bit one-dimensional on the oaky aroma spectrum.
Conclusion: Pleasant for beginners but nothing more.

  35. HammerHead scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

A very fresh and fruity nose with all kinds of apple and pear (both sweet ripe ones and more sour stuff), also floral with sparkling notes of cirus and slight vanilla. Slides down really easy, though it's not the most complex of drams. There's some more of a bitter and slight flattening note in development and finish. Overall good value for money.

Fresh and dried apples, honey, marzipan, graham, subtle baking spice and hints of banana chips and sultanas.

As it opens there’s a wisp of a floral note, but on the whole it’s fruity and honey sweet.

    (TASTED BLIND)
NOSE: Sweet candy, green herbs, wintergreen, petroleum, mint, dried banana, sweet bourbon. (89p).
TASTE: The arrival is a bit fruity, with mild orchard fruits. On the mid palate the fruitiness continues and is joined by a nice freshness/acidity, a touch of astringency and some green herbal notes. All in all quite nice. (88p).
FINISH: Fruitiness, acidity, astringency and green herbs come together with a touch of pepper/wood spice. Fairly long. (87-88p).
OVERALL: A restrained fruitiness and measured level of complexity. Probably not for everyone but I like this fruity-acidic and mildly astringent style quite well. Total score 88 points.

Another very nice bottling from Compass Box. As the beautiful design of the whiskey suggests, this blended malt is a true fruit composition. When pouring, strong sugared vanilla notes pour out of the glass paired with Nashi pear, apple and a small, light note of smoke. The taste with typical bourbon barrel facets, vanilla and a basket with light sweet and sour fruits. The alcohol cools the palate like after biting into a mint leaf. A smoky note can be guessed at with a lot of imagination. The aftertaste is medium-long with honey sweetness, fruit and a bit of oak bitterness.

Nose is pretty good, fruity, floral, young, pears, grapes, vanilla, slightly saltiness and maritime. Taste is unpleasant. Lot of wood, bitter, burned sugar. Finish is bitter, acidy, not pleasant.

    COLOR: straw / white wine

    - the alcohol is still clearly present and not full
involved, quite complex and according to the nose
presumably it will also be a great whiskey in 5 - 10 years - but now, in my opinion, it will be bottled too early,
    - for 40 € not very expensive, but there is clearly
    better ones
    • Nose
Nice fresh flowery nose, some smoke in the background, citrus, vanilla, young but already quite complex
    • Taste
Strong, spicy start, clear oak aromas, spice, much stronger than the smell suggests, behind the still quite dominant alcohol, the vanilla and citrus aromas come to the fore, water is also good for him at 46%
    • Finish
      medium-long, strong, spicy finish;
      medium-long spicy aftertaste

Surprisingly good for its (young) age and (low) price.

By the way, this is the age ratio:
    Benrinnes - 8 y.o.
    Linkwood - 8 y.o.
    Clynelish - 8 y.o.
Distillery near the town of Aberlour - 6 y.o.
    Highland Malt Blend - 10 y.o.
    Caol Ila - 8 y.o.

    [Weighted arithmetic mean: 7,88 years.]
    • Nose
      86 86
Fragrantly floral and fruity, with a soft waxiness (thanks to Clynelish and Benrinnes) and lovely wood notes. The fruits come across as "young" (mainly grape, pear, and peach), but are well integrated with some oily spirit, sweet ex-bourbon aromas, and a slightly savory side. The minuscule amount of Caol Ila provides a briny / saline / maritime backdrop without ever translating into any actual smokiness. Buttery soft with zero alcohol in the nose. Honeyed and rich. Excellent cask quality.
    • Taste
      86 86
Surprisingly deep and textured, with a great balance of sweetness, fruity acidity, and oak spice. Again, no "boozy", alcoholic impression; the first-fill bourbon wood has done its job well and filtered out any rough edges in a short amount of time. This may not have worked with other distillates, but the Clynelish/Benrinnes/Caol Ila combination really comes through with a nice mouthfeel and way more character than your standard 10-12-year-old Speysider. I'm no Linkwood expert, but there's also a faintly herbal/earthy/rooty impression that it might be responsible for. Tasty, fun, and unboring to drink.
    • Finish
      85 85
Long, especially when you take age into account. Honeyed, malty and fruity, with immaculate oak influence and a puff of smoke to round things off and prolong the experience. At times I'm unsure if there's just a whiff of more "neutral" alcohol in the finish, but the impression comes and goes, so I'm detracting no more than a point here.

Reminds me a lot of WID 163232. No wonder, since the main ingredient is Linkwood (39%):

Benrinnes - First Fill Bourbon Barrel 20.0%
Linkwood - First Fill Bourbon Barrel 39.0%
Clynelish - First Fill Bourbon Barrel 29.0%
Distillery near the town of Aberlour - Revatted Oloroso Sherry Seasoned Butt 8.0%
Highland Malt Blend - Own French Oak Barrel - Heavy Toast 2.0%
Caol Ila - First Fill Bourbon Barrel 2.0%

The name says it all: very nice light fruit notes. Vineyard peaches, pears, pineapples, apples. In addition, delicious grain notes. Oatmeal, muesli. Uncomplicated, perfect strength.

Right away, worth 88 points for me. A bargain for the price (40 €). Easy drinking summer whiskey.
