The nose really surprised me positively. In the mouth then really a bit thin and behind he is too woody.
    • Nose

For a while, I had a lid on the glass and the first smell after a blaring an incredible fruit bomb. Pure fruit salad, even after it is still creamy and fruity, good portion of vanilla, the fruits go more in the ex-Bourbon direction, peach passion fruit, possibly a touch of banana, but behind it there is a certain Nussigkeit and iodine, probably from the Oloro bottoms are the result, I find the nose surprisingly good, one wonders what to expect when one sees the 78P average rating.
    • Taste
      82 82
ok, the mouthfeel is relatively watery, but also neat, fruity, again the nuts, a sweet base note, vanilla, peach, then a lot of oak
    • Finish
      79 79
getting drier, tart, bitten grape seeds, creamy, very mild, medium long, maybe a bit too woody behind

Great entry-level whisky at a reasonable price.

  4. MrDvorak scored this whisky 80 points Expert Senior

Ripe red apples with nuts in the aroma. The taste meets with citrus bitterness, and accompanies it with pulp. The finish is bitter, spicy, rather short.

Simple and unremarkable whisky, the bitterness in the taste is very parasitic.

Nose: slightly sweet, sherry, touch of marcepan, nuttines, sultanas, cinnamon.

Taste: rough, spirity, slightly acidic, woody, little bit of banana, dried red fruits

    Finish: sweet, midle-long

My first triple distilled whisky. Interesting sweet yellow fruit nose, but a bit too much alcohol on first taste. It opens up on the palate, revealing toffee and apricot flavours. Interesting daily dram, yet not breathtaking.

  10. Highlander65 scored this whisky 70 points Expert Senior

On the nose, initially a lot of pulpy and juicy fruit, an explosion of fruit, mainly pear, but mixed with a light vanilla and a touch of sugary (powdered sugar). Then the fruity notes fade and the sugary notes of vanilla pudding and cotton candy assert themselves. After a while, even the dessert goes away and remains a good fruit tart.
In the mouth the body is light, typical of the triple distillation. Seen the smell, I imagined the taste sweeter, instead the first impression is a sour note, like slightly unripe wild fruit, followed by a pleasant note of licorice.
    Medium-lasting finish, licorice, sugar.
A decent malt, but I expected more. In particular, returning to smell the whisky after a couple of sips you no longer feel much of the original scent, the impression is of a slightly dull malt, you no longer even feel the alcohol, just a vaguely fruity background note . I didn't like this at all. On the other hand, the first olfactory impressions are good, the iridescent scent and the note of licorice, but their fading after the first sip was really a disappointment.

Soft and accessible, although there is a cheese flavor in the distance that I don't like. Impersonal, anonymous and faint, that too. The aftertaste has some small details that let you raise your eyebrows for a while, but before you can indicate a more specific taste, everything fades into a smooth wood-with-vanilla-in-cream sauce flavor. No, not good, this one. Among the 80 points on WB; quite rightly so.
After an evening of beer, the second tasting, it turns out to be a great slobberaar without pretensions and with a nice woody and vanilla accent.

  14. Slàinte Mhath scored this whisky 82 points Super Administrator

Triple distillation gives this Lowland whisky a refined, soft and creamy character. If you believe that Auchentoshan 12 is only suitable for beginners, you are missing an awful lot! The nose is light and sweet with a pleasant crème brûlée note. Gentle citrus fruits harmonize with herbal vanilla, raisins and honey. Tastewise, the sherry cask influence certainly adds to the complexity of this Single Malt. It's sweet and mildly fruity with hints of hazelnuts. The finish is clean, moderate and semidry. An intriguing whisky that is refreshingly different from the others!

Well, so-so. The finish is generally a hat, a mess, nothing expressive, very short and spineless.
    • Nose
Ripe apples, nut paste, hazelnuts, ripe pear, apple jam, a little honey.
    • Taste
Distinct citrus bitterness, a handful of different nuts, an overripe orange with zest.
    • Finish
Walnut, bitter-spicy, porridge made of honey and malt.

That's special ... especially the nose should not be for everyone.
    • Nose
One thinks first, but then nothing comes - but then something comes: Cheese feet, clearly cheese feet. And that was obviously the spark for the other flavors that are now moving forward: malt, some citrus, cinnamon, old fruit bubble gum - and something that's not that good any more.
    • Taste
Gentle start on the tongue, strong malty and nutty. Maybe a small wine note, some honey. As intense nutty and malty as the onset was on the tongue, so quickly the aromas dissipate again. A short appearance.
    • Finish
In short, with malt, honey and a touch of floral notes.

    • Nose
Bit of a sweet bourbony, also has something bland. No smell explosion, fairly flat. Smells like a pretty full whisky. It is also almost present, for Auchentoshan, known vanilla odor.
    • Taste
Medium body with a slightly fuller taste. Certainly no taste explosion in your mouth, but the characteristic soft Auchentoshan character is present. Soft on the palate, with a somewhat more expansive aftertaste, which lingers slightly at the top of the throat. Has some sweet, some fruity and some spicy (especially the aftertaste) Reasonably flat whisky, which may bring a little more spice and / or flavor. therefore somewhat disappointed.

An enjoyable introduction to Lowland whisky. Not especially complex, but the maturation is solid and the whisky is well balanced. The nose and taste take a bit of patience, but there's an elegance in the form that makes up for it.
    • Nose
Soft malt, hazelnut and brown sugar, soft toffee, soft Sherry tannins and cinnamon, bitter cherries, floral cocoa turning to citrus
    • Taste
Sherry and oak tannins, cocoa, a bit of honey turning floral
    • Finish
Soft malt and vanilla, a hint of baking spices fades to faint soft anise seed

  28. Allandale scored this whisky 78 points Connoisseur

    • Nose
Citrus and hint of wood oil. The nuts have shifted to bran, but water brings out a thicker aroma reminiscent of banana split with chopped hazelnuts. Almond milk.
    • Taste
Soft start with good feel and better structure. Some sweet licorice. Though dulled a little with water  the sweet: dry interplay continue on the nose and in the mouth.

The Auchentoshan 12 has interesting notes in the nose, especially the sweet strawberry jam I had at every tasting first. In the mouth, it is then nothing more than a gentle breeze, brings hardly any substance. And the finish is unspectacular - except a little honey-like sweetness and a light floral fragrance is not much. Again, a whisky, which gives away a lot of potential with a low alcohol content.
    • Nose
Strawberry jam, vanilla, overripe fruits, light metallic notes, alcohol despite 40% clearly noticeable, light citrus note, as basis a nice malty sweetness
    • Taste
very different, as the nose can expect - a nutty spicy, which is especially on the palate wide, hardly any fruit, mild sweetness. The tongue searches, but finds hardly appreciable flavors.
    • Finish
becoming drier with floral notes on leaving, there is little sticking.

Sorry, but it does not work. My first malt I absolutely do not like. After the napping aroma in the nose, I had to urge me to continue tasting. The nose does not work. Taste and finish are just flat and an expression of absolute irrelevance. Too bad.
    • Nose
      Grain and straw; a little chocolate; sweet honey and bright apples; a discreet, dusty muff overlays everything;
somehow the aroma becomes sour over time and there are false notes reminiscent of ammonia (just as litter boxes smell, they have not been cleaned for a long time): The aroma is very disturbing and spoils the desire for taste and finish.
    • Taste
slightly bitter, then sweeter; Apples and again cereals; a little bit of chocolate; the oak also shows a little bit
    • Finish
short, slightly spicy and then it will be sweet

Nose: briny, maritime, salt airPalate: sea, cinnamon, citrus, almonds, vanilla, dry

Auchentoshan 12 ticks all the light and mild boxes. On the nose, I enjoyed fresh maritime scents with the strong sense of salt air. To my liking, it served this maritime nose without the medicinal scents that usually accompany those drams that so strongly evoke the seaside.

On the palate, the drink was more complex and well-balanced--leaning towards dry. I got almond, caramel, vanilla, a hint of citrus and a tiny whiff of cinnamon as well as the brine I’d had on the nose. The finish was shorter than I’d like and came with a tiny puff of smoke mostly experienced in my nose. Somehow though even with the surprising dimensions added to the nose by the palate, the Auchentoshan 12 left me a little uninspired.

One year ago I tried the 12 yo the first time. It was bottled in 2008 and was quite a disappointmernt: an unpleasant combination of dull vanilla, caramel and creme brulee. Sort of flawed, therefore the score of 71 points.

During the Whisky Live 2012 Shanghai, i had another go. It was from a new batch bottled in 2012. What a change! Refreshing, lively, fruity, a real nice aperitif. Improved a lot, now has a different and enjoyable profile. Easily 10 points more!

    Just avoid the older bottlings.....

    • Nose
The nose is very sweet with a load of caramel, a whiff of nuts and a spoonful of honey. I like it. A lot!<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
    • Taste
The taste is sweet, but not overly so. Just a tad of lemon, but again loads of caramel and honey.
    • Finish
The finish is medium lenght, sweet and dry.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

Very interesting drop with its own character: for this price you can not say anything!
    • Nose
Wood fibers, clear furniture polish, sweet floral perfume, apple cores (almond flavor)
    • Taste
      Flower meadow, marzipan
    • Finish
Licorice, clear wood, very discreet scrub, Molasse in a medium length finish

    • Finish
      Medium.  Fresh dark red fruit.

This is a very smooth, almost like an Irish whisky. But I want more flavor and longer finish.
    • Nose
      Sweet, fruity and nutty..
    • Taste
Very smooth taste, maybe little to smooth. Lots of vanilla flavors.
    • Finish
      Very short.

    I still prefer the Classic.
    • Nose
      Floral, lemon cake, light sherry.
    • Taste
      Sweet, a little soft.
    • Finish
Short, bitterness. Nothing really stands out

Pleasant and easy drinkable every day dram.
    • Nose
Fresh and clean with an intensive lemoncake flavour and very flowery. Hints of sherry but definitely not what one would expect from a sherry casked whisky. It is coloured. Lovely nose.
    • Taste
Very smooth, mild and easy drinkable. Sweet and fruity. Then there are malt, sherry, cake and caramel.
    • Finish
Sweet, pleasant and medium long. Caramel and cake.

On a regular basis I prefer the cheaper 10 year old. Or the new called, classic. But perhaps that is because I prefer bourbon matured whiskies over sherry matured whiskies
