A damn good Bang-for-your-Buck Single Malt with a lot of Sherry cask influence.
Due to Auchentoshan's light Distillery character the cask shines through even more.

Aging in ex-bourbon casks, followed by further aging in an Oloroso sherry cask and finally in a sweet Pedro Ximenez sherry cask.

    - a great NAS whisky
    - clearly the best of the "WOOD" bottlings
    - very great, mild, soft and aromatic combination
    - PLV: for about 40 € absolutely ok, definitely worth the price
    • Nose
directly a very great fresh, sweetish fruity aroma, toffee, caramel, fruit cocktail
    • Taste
lighter mild start, increasingly fruity development on the palate, sweetness, toffee, mild sherry, at the end light oak, leather
    • Finish
      medium-long, very soft round finish;
      long finish, fruity

I've heard a lot of good things about the old bottling, but had to settle for one from 11.2020 instead. I've heard this was aged for 12 years in ex-bourbon, plus 2 years in 2 different sherry casks. However, as with any NAS whisky, it's virtually impossible to verify the real age.
    • Nose
I love a good sherried whisky, but this isn't what I was expecting at all. This is like cognac, pure cognac. Seemingly something close to XO class. Raisins, berries, a touch of vanilla and spice, some tobacco and leather. Quite heavy on oak, but not overpowering. But where's the malt? I can't find any distinct whisky notes in this, no matter how hard I try. It's still a very nice nose, but it's not exactly a whisky nose per se.
    • Taste
A bit less cognac, more like a good brandy, but still not quite the sherried whisky I was looking for. I guess this is what happens when you run a triple distilled malt without much character of its own through heavily seasoned sherry casks. The sherry has taken over the palate completely. At the same time, it's not exactly what I would call a sherry bomb either. A sherry bomb whisky is a fine fusion of malt and brandy notes, but I'm simply not getting the malt here. It's also bit thinner than I expected. Watering down to 43 ABV and chill filtering this release was not the best idea.
    • Finish
Medium, sweet and dry. Moderately heavy on oak. I'm also getting some leather, tobacco and black tea notes, plus a light touch of pepper. It's a classic sherried finish, minus the malt, which is nowhere to be found.

Final thoughts: I really find it hard to recommend this release, although I don't dislike it myself. It's certainly unusual and even somewhat pleasant, but it simply doesn't smell or taste like whisky at all. That would be more forgivable if only this was a proper sherry bomb, with a thicker body and more actual distillery character. I would love to try an unfiltered release at 46 ABV.

This whisky definitely deserves attention. One of my favorites is Auchentoshan.
    • Nose
Multifaceted, honey, with a high content of malt and wine tones. I feel dried fruits (prunes, raisins). After breathing in a snifter, aromas of vanilla, coffee, tobacco leaves and old leather appear.
    • Taste
Sweet, full of berry, fruity and chocolate notes, with a moderate oak and spice influence.
    • Finish
Long enough, rich. Sherry at first, with a nutty twist. Then sweet, filled with hints of prunes and milk chocolate. A little scorching at the end, with oak bitterness and hot pepper. Smoothly fading away the last in the aftertaste are vanilla and creamy echoes.

It could be a little more intense and harmonious, also less sharp. However, I am also enthusiastic about the strong plum aroma. Pickled plums with cinnamon.
The barrel-ripened Umeshu from Yamazaki also has a strong fruit note in this direction. That's what I really appreciate about this bottling.
    • Nose
      85 85
Very intense after pickled plums with cinnamon. The alcohol tingles the nose a bit, but still within tolerable limits. In addition, vanilla, cherries (also pickled) and delicate oak spice. With increasing warmth (lukewarm) the fruits shrink and it appears less balanced. Honey and wax are now added.
    • Taste
      83 83
Quite thin body and a little bit alcoholic. Fortunately, the pickled plum can also be found in the mouth, along with a distinct bitterness. Not bad at all, but everything could be a little more harmonious.
    • Finish
      85 85
Medium-long finish. There are the pickled plums, together with vanilla sauce.

    BLIND PROVEN
    Product of chemistry.

    Aroma : off-balanced
Varnish, un-refined oil, raisins, plums, slightly molded cheese, hint of orange

Palate : sharper than should be for this level of flavour intensity
Arrival : bourbon-like caramel, nothing more
Development : Char, Plums and very distant dried fruits, burnt branches and earth, chemical varnish note

  26. noeinwhisky scored this whisky 82 points Member Junior

Nose: lots and lots of raisins, dried exotic fruits, strong varnish notes with metallic overtones
Palate: dry and bitter (cocoa beans) with a smidgen of what we Scots call foostieness
Finish: surprisingly long with a nice balance between sweet and sour

I was anticipating a more sanitized drinking experience from a Beam Suntory but this expression ticked more boxes than I had expected.

Yes, what do you want to say to this bottling. For some, too artificial and in fact, like Bushmills 16yo, I feel a forced and imprinted wine-red mints that can be interesting and tasty if you catch the right day. But that's why it's not a daydram for me, but rather something "special" for the cold season. I would almost try this whisky once boiled or hot to taste.

Pleasant chocolate confectionery and perfume moth, excellent balance, spicy, light, especially good aroma, but other components are not far behind. I am a supporter of consumption of whisky in its pure form, but I can not but note the excellent compatibility of this mole with fruit, especially with green grapes.

Triple distilled Lowlander, who can score with massive oak charging. Nose and taste form nice counterpoints. A little more sweetness on the finish would have been pleasant. For that you get full oak power.
    • Nose
Fresh sherry in combination with slightly oak spice, vanilla ice cream with raspberries, with some time comes caramel sweetness, wonderfully round and sweet, nothing of the alcohol, syrupy berry wine, cinnamon, cloves

Smooth (bit oily) soft sweet. Toffee, caramel, dried fruits. Little spice. Needs somewhat else to balance the sweetness.

Some typical sherry PX notes are there.
    • Finish
Woody finish, finishing with sweet caramel and toffee (lots of toffee). Could have more complexity and gets somewhat boring after a few sips!

      Medium to short finish.

Smell orange (peel), resin, wood. Sherry in scent and in color. Many different flavors described in 4 tastings: currants (2x), citrus (2x), chocolate, black fruit. Vanilla, later creamy on the tongue - with sharp edge. One time vague turpentine air is described. Haagse Hopjes, marmalade. Very tasty, "fall whisky".

Nose is weak to say the least. Taste hits the palate like a nuke, lots of caramel at the start, then an overdose of tanines. Very flat whisky, not complex whatsoever.

Used too many casks for maturation, tastes like inferior?¿ stuff to be honest. Tanines killed the spirit. Try to triple mature like Laphroaig did with their Triple Wood. It's way more balanced and complex, spirit seems more alive.
Rated this 58/100. Don't need to taste this again, or perhaps a future version in a few years when they [Auchentoshan] learned not to add heaps of caramel.

  84. Magnus Hillman scored this whisky 82 points Expert Senior

The nose and the flavor was really nice and complex but the finish was a bit disappointing. Only had one dram though, have to try it again.

    (Rating interval 80-84)
    • Nose
Spicy on the nose, and rubber, I am thinking a bicycle tire. A very nice scent of organic solvent, like oil paint, powdered paprika and licorice. After water more caramel notes, burnt sugar and pepperoni.
    • Taste
Nice mouth fill, again spicy with herb salt and hints of smoked paprika, sweet notes with vanilla and brown sugar, cocoa and instant coffee. There is a vegetable note after water, I am thinking celery.
    • Finish
The finish is relatively short and vapid. There are some weak notes of cocoa and spices in finish but it's suddenly vanished.

    Taste: pleasant sweet, soft, chocolate, bitter choco;

    Finish: longer with sherry, chocolate and berries, warming;
Conclusion: wood and fruits in a strong mixture, yummy! The three types of keg have done a great job. It has emerged a tasty, complex whisky.

This is no bad whisky, but there is something slightly... unsettled and unbalanced about the taste. It`s quite complex and nuanced, but I`m not entirely sure this particular combination of casks works well - there`s simply too much obtrusive bitterness coming from (I suspect) the sherry casks, which doesn`t mesh well with the floral and strong tea notes.

  97. rinuskrijnen scored this whisky 84 points Expert Junior

The whisky is very accessible, yet powerful and although soft, yet complex.

I can only emphasize what alectron said below. I`ve just changed my initial rate of 79 to 85, since now, after I have left the bottle open for about 8 months, it`s so much better - smoother and more balanced - than the first time I tasted it. Now the sherry and oak notes are well integrated, when I opened the bottle the sherry was too strong. Very pleasant dram now. It`s something strange: You never drink the same whisky twice. (Whisky-drinkers variation of Heraclitus` "No man ever steps into the same river twice")

  99. pilgrim77 scored this whisky 77 points Expert Senior

Fruity and sweet nose, with toffee and caramel in the background. A slightly rough edge was tamed with a drop of water. Quite oily, sour and bitter on the palate though, masking any underlying subtlety. Not particularly complex, and all-in-all I am left with the impression of this whisky feeling quite `closed`, even with time and water.

    • Nose
Sherry on the nose, cocoa, even slightly pure in coffee, candied walnut, very flattering, rounded off by pleasant notes of wood (seasoned wood)
    • Taste
On the palate, wood and sherry are predominant, relatively dry, the mildness of a triple distilled seems only slightly more easily.
    • Finish
In the finish purely come the more sweet cocoa notes, but the wood and sherry always remain present.
The finish is quite long, warm, and ends in the wood.

It’s almost as good as the 12 Year Old (although that is an altogether different whisky), much better than the 10 Year Old, the Classic and the Select. According to Jim Murray’s 2010 Whisky Bible, this dram is very unbalanced and thus only deserves a 74. But to me, the roughness was a bonus and came out pretty well. But that’s just me – and I do have a soft spot for my Toshans, I admit.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
    • Nose
The nose is sweet and warm, like most Auchentoshans in my opinion, with raisins, dades and a lot of sherry. After leaving it in the glass to settle down for a minute or two, I also sensed orange peel, toffee, a pinch of tobacco and even brown sugar. This is a very interesting nose, with lots going on at the same time. Eye opener.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
    • Taste
The first sip is somewhat syrupy, but in a positive sense. The soft sherry notes come out first.
    • Finish
The finish is very, very long, fresh and fruity, but a bit dry at the death. Even a little bit bourbon-like, which surprised me somewhat. I recommend smelling your empty glass again after a minute or two. Nice! <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

    • Nose
Nose gives the sense of light glue, spirits, dried fruits, fingernail polish, oak, flowers, toffee, dark chocolate and some sherry notes, which are quite insignificant in this case.
    • Taste
It starts very flat, becomes a little sweet, flowery, with hints of soup, light smoke, spirit and detergent.
    • Finish
Medium long with hints of soap, flowers, biscuits, but it´s relatively flat and not very exiting.

Just had a funny re-encounter with this. Back when I opened the bottle about 10 months ago, I didn't like it much & gave it something around 77 I think, then left the bottle opened & 2/3rds empty untouched for +6 months. And recently I had a dram again and it feels like it changed for the better over the last months... so now it's more like a 83/84 suddenly.

Shame that all of my favorite islays just seem to turn for the worse instead of better after a few months...

    • Nose
Shoe polish, lemons and lots of liquorice. The distillery character is masked by the three wood.
    • Taste
Sweet with rich toffee and maple sirup plus ginger, liquorice, coffee and white pepper. Dominated by oaky notes. Unbalanced.
