[April, 2017]  Glen Craig (or Glencraig) is the name of the whisky that was produced by the two Lomond stills at old Glenburgie distillery (between 1958 and 1981).  It was named after the former production director William Craig of parent company Hiram Walker.

The nose is very much on highland peaty flavours (like a cold fireplace, very different from seaside peat that is more medical, iodine, maritime) - not massive peat, but still clearly identifiable.  More aromas are on honey, beeswax and polished furniture.  Very delicate and interesting, I like that!

Bold arrival in the mouth with a slightly adstringent feeling from heavy wooden notes.  Nevertheless very nice and not too unpleasant.  Tons of oak in the body but again all in a firm, bearable structure.  Some hints of different fruits and spices, quite complex.  The finish is long and a little bit drying (no wonder given all the woods), but very enjoyable.  With water it gets much smoother and less woody, but it looses some of its interesting spikes as well.  I like it more when neat. All in all a very nice Glen Craig, if it had been bottled some years earlier it most probably would have been a stunner.  But still very sippable...

This is lovely, my sort of whisky, not had Glencraig for ages, I need to put that right on the strength of this one.

Full fat on the palate and its what I call substantial, bourbon notes again, plum, a little peach, red apple skins then there are some orange notes with a little caramel

A whisky with a-typical herbal and spicy profile, but very special though. Delicious and well balanced.
    • Nose
This is like walking in a herb garden. Nettle soup, caraway seed and anise. Grassy notes. Heather flowers. Some mint as well. Lots of freshness.
    • Taste
Oily and waxy. Artichokes. Green vegetables. Caraway again. Pineapples. Later on polished oak. Cinnamon
    • Finish
Long, sappy and sweet.  Spices of gingery and nutmeg.
