Laphroaig 10 year cask strength batch 13
    Alcohol ABV: 57.9% Cask:ex-Bourbon Barrels

    =>Nose: mangosteen, pepper. nice smell

=>Taste: onion, bread. The finish is strong peat.I would still prefer some older Laphroaig.

    =>Score: 82 [Recommend to try]

Smell: As usual, the present ashy smoke in the foreground, but Batch 13 is sweetish and fatter on the nose than the previous bottlings, smoked bacon, sweetish iodine, a little less differentiated than usual, light raisined fruits in brine, unusually sherry-dominated nose, beer stock, malty ...

Taste: overall rather on the sweet side, of course also (again) phenolically salty, tar, nice balance, spicy oak, long finish, again spicy and greasy

Colour: copper, narrow to medium water rim, clear

Conclusion: Batch 13 also delivers, but a bit more conformist and without the last "edge" like the predecessors - the dram is still fun!

Yes, that's how a Laphroaig should be 10 yrs, but that price is absurdly high. I rarely buy another bottle from this distillery. The price/quality is not right.

Hugely Smokey and peaty, some brine, medicinal, a sweeter note - banana maybe. Powerful palate, lots of brine, wet rocks, antiseptic, herbal, pepper. Finish is chocolate, coffee, pine resin, oak and fresh tobacco notes linger.

  15. serejja scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

Powerful, salty, iodine-rich, ashy, less fruity and fresh than batch 11. Slightly less aggressive but great anyway. In general, batch 11 is still superior to this. A lot of pepper in the taste. Champagne notes are also present. Taste has some slightly unpleasant notes of anise/mint that seem too much and too outstanding

An excellent continuation of the series. It is a pity that there are no earlier samples left, otherwise I would like to compare them in one tasting. An amazing combination of fresh and heavy tones, high and low notes.
    • Nose
Smoke, cucumber, light tones of citruses, dried fruits, smoked tones, soot, fish oil, ground and soaked barley, sea.
    • Taste
Smoked dried fruits, mackerel, lemon juice, a little iodine on the bandage.
    • Finish
Brightly smoky, sweet, smoked, quite long.

Another very nice Laphroaig 10 CS version. This batch takes a step back concerning cask influence. More Laphroaig, less cask.
    Concerning price/performance ratio: 9/10

Warm green apple cider, silky caramel, vanilla ice cream, cereal, some light aniseed, come chili peppers, mint, old elastics, menthol cigarettes, apple slices, and dark chocolate ice cream.

It's less peaty and medicinal than the standard 10, creamier, and with punchier caramel and apples. It's a tasty easy drinker.

My first 10 CS; I perceived as an extremely intense Laphroaig. The smoke is very present and fills the room for a long time, all attention is focused on the smoke and wood, no distracting elements. Just pure Laphroaig, full broadside and unchecked - 11/12/2021
    • Nose
      89 89
The familiar Laphroaig smoke quickly spreads and fills the room.
Dry, sun-warmed wood, woody herbs, oregano, dried mint, spirulina, very phenolic with light earthy tones, the alcohol is perfectly integrated, I can't detect any sweetness or fruit, the full concentration is on the smoke and the wood
    • Taste
      89 89
The sparkling barrel hits hard, dried ginger, curry paste, very oily, greasy sweetness followed by dried herbs, lots of wood and of course untamed smoke
    • Finish

Long, tart, dried thyme, sea salt

Phenolic smoke, iodine, tar, ash rather cold, batter, white pepper, something fresh on the nose without really disturbing. Impressions continue in the taste with smoke, salt, iodine, malt sweetness, white pepper, at the end cinnamon and then there are slightly bitter-tart notes of tannins. Long finish, becoming dry, spicy-dry and slightly salty notes, again the bitter-tart notes.
Based on the alcohol strength, I didn't really feel the need to add water. With water, three drops to approx. 1cl, it becomes a bit tingling on the edges of the tongue, which doesn't really bother, but it becomes sweeter in taste and the bitterness of the tannins is significantly reduced.

First, second and third pour. Laphroaig CS 13. Expensive, unavailable, artificially coloured. Bought 4 bottles and paid the whole caboodle at the customs fair. Don't pay more than 100€. Its a good whisky, but its not a great whisky.
    • Nose
      91 91
Cucumber, green apple, sweet bubblegum, mango, papaya, dirty wet bonfire, burnt electrical circuits. Relatively gigantic nose.
    • Taste
      87 87
Subdued and dry. Lesser sibling of the #12. Burnt caramel and smoke. Canned smoke at that. Hints of tropical fruit. Plentiful medicinal smoky concepts. Minute. Sweet bubblegum again on the mid palate.
    • Finish
      86 86
Sweet and sour, dry smoke. Pepper. Granite. Long but uninteresting.

  38. Whisky Hamster scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

As the last in row of a 4 dram cask strength flight with all others non-peaty, this 10 cs surprisingly comes across quite civilized and tamed. Slight variation (again) of classic Laphi cs notes, even a hint of some Marsalla/Madeira/Moscatel finish - which obviously does not exist... Well-made stuff as always but initial impression did not leave me in awe wanting to stock up.

Sorry, dear Laphroaig team: The addition of dye is declared on the back label! With a cheap quarter cask in the price range up to 35 euros, I can live with that. But for a 10-year-old Cask Strength, that's not possible for me!

  41. Danlow scored this whisky 91 points Expert Senior

I know a lot of smoky whiskys. Today I tried the 10 CS (Batch 13) in parallel with an Ardbeg Uigeadail and a Laphroaig Quarter Cask. The barrel strength 10 is the clear winner of the day. Is it worth almost three times the price of the Quarter Cask and the 10'er? I would say: yes, absolutely!
Archer certainly has more experience with the Laphroaig barrel strengths, so I agree with his review; I also like to carry them with me, as I've already had a few Laphroaigs. I had previously (sometimes several times) the Laphroaig Quarter Cask, the normal 10, 16 and 18 (white tube). This one here (10 CS) scores the level of the 18'ers, which was my favorite last time. But I like it with whisky with strength and frontal smoke in the face, because the 10 CS really picks me up.
I have almost the same taste and smell: smoke, ginger, a flowering meadow of herbs, rich, lightly salted caramel and soft vanilla. A bit of bitter, dry wood - really subtle - adds flavor to the whole thing, but it never becomes uncomfortable or too bitter. Red currants can also be found in terms of taste. The alcohol is well integrated overall. In summary, the smell and taste are dominated by a sweetness that turns into dry, spicy and smoky oak in the finish. I don't want to dilute it.
When I nosing, I still get ripe green grapes and apples.
I don't want to fuel purchases, but I have just reordered it for less than € 80, because it is absolutely worth it!

Once a year (even twice this year!) The anxious question: is it good again, the 10 CS? For me the answer is clear: yes, absolutely.
Initially reminded me of the previous batch 012 in the nose, but then turns in a different direction on the tongue. No herbs like in batch 011, very straight forward. Batch 011 at 58.6% tolerated a few drops of water, Batch 012 came off best on its own, which was quite surprising in view of its 60.1%. Batch 013 imitates its predecessor and is best served pure and undiluted in a glass.
    • Nose
      91 91
I still remember the previous batch 012 very well - after all, two bottles of it ended up in the waste glass - and the nose of this year's batch reminds me quite clearly of batch 012 at first: a classic Laphroaig 10 CS in every respect - nose: seaweed, gauze bandage , Hansaplast, tar paper heated by the sun. The warm tar stands out particularly in this batch. Phenolic peat smoke can be made out very clearly, it is in the glass from the start, beautifully interwoven with marjoram, allspice and chervil. And there is a tasty fruit sweetness in the background that is not that easy to identify. This sweet fruit note (something between dried apricot pieces and flambéed banana) has never come before me in this form in any batch. But it goes very well with the other flavors.
    • Taste
      91 91
It hits the tongue hard, like a wave that ravages the otherwise tranquil harbor. Dry peat smoke dominates, dragging seaweed, gauze, warm tar paper and pepper with it. Troubled harbor basin. Immediately afterwards, however, the sweet fruit notes try to assert themselves against peat smoke and the harbor basin. Not entirely successful, but one attempt is enough to permanently identify the fruit. Less differently spicy than on the nose, but besides the pepper there is also a little chervil and thyme. Vanilla pudding, a little pine honey.
    • Finish
      90 90
Medium to long finish. At the end the peat smoke surges again properly and pushes itself over the tongue in warm waves. Cold coffee, milk chocolate, vanilla, a hint of liquorice, moistened nori sheets.

Laphroaig now adds caramel color to the annual cask-strength release. The back label of my German bottle says "mit Farbstoff"...sad.

Apart from that, Batch 13 is on par with with the previous ones: intense, heady, medicinal+maritime smoke, kelp on the beach, warm day at the harbor, hospital, iodine, bandages, tar, spices, peppery, blackberries, dried apricots, tobacco.

Highly recommended! In my opinion, still a bargain for 80€ RRP.

    • Nose
      87 87
Rich and deep. Full of overnight lit cigar, peat, smoke, lemon, lime, plaster ceiling board, wet paint, dust and iodine, the initial nose is impressive. Very subtle notes of honey and barbecued ham undertone prolong this moment of enjoyment. Allowed to breath for 15 minutes and with drops of water added, new fruity notes of orange and peach appeared along with spices notes of cinnamon and liquorice. Notes of peat and smoke uplifted as well.
    • Taste
      85 85
Powerful, rich and heady on arrival. The iodine, smoke and peat comes in first with a punch into your mouth, with a wafts of hot spice lingering inside. The barbecue element is there, with some metallic taste, soot and hints of gunpowder. With water: vanilla, black truffle, smoked Peking duck, poached pears in caramel syrup, burnt marshmallow and dehydrated orange. Struck match stick with woody notes appears gently and gradually disappears throughout.
    • Finish
      85 85
Medium long. Bourbon vanilla and luscious wood smoke spread across the taste bud. It lingers with the notes of pineapple, pear and sweet spices of cinnamon and liquorice. The mid palate is saturated with notes of honey. Retro nasal recreates the atmosphere of a Chinese medicine hall. Empty glass is smoke, hot, spice and fruity.
