It’s good. My first experience with Nc’Nean was back in April in London at Milroy’s, as a Nc’Nean based highball. I wasn’t convinced. But it was probably not the whisky’s fault. To be honest, I’ve never been convinced by any highball ever for now (not that I tried many). So for my first time with a Nc’Nean neat in my Glencairn, I have to say I’ve had a good surprise, I wasn’t expecting as much. Sure, the youth is always present, but it shows a good complexity, the use of STR casks is here really successful, I didn’t get those excessive woody and winey notes I usually get, so kudos for that.
    • Nose
Intense. Uhu glue stick, nail varnish remover. After some time fruits appear: pear, plum eau de vie, with some dark berries and apricot as well, but all feel like fruits eau de vie. It’s a bit herbal as well with lemongrass mostly, hay and munched grass. The alcohol notes are quite present, and I always find chemicals notes like paint and white spirit solvent.
    • Taste
Softer than expected arrival, but quickly spicy then malty and fruity, with something slightly tannic as well, like the taste of sediment in a bottle of red wine. Really surprising first sip. Pepper and nutmeg with orange and pear I would say. On a second sip, lots of pear again, but also the feeling of some fruity sweets, ginger biscuits, some sour notes appear, like those sweets are a bit like an arlequin but where the main note would be pear instead of banana. Some milk chocolate, lemon, orange, and some malty notes. Really nice. Nice creamy mouthfeel as well.
    • Finish
Slight fruity sourness and sweetness, with real grandma’s hot chocolate, thick and full on chocolate. Again that wine sediment taste as well. Medium length

This fabric is very beautiful. Soft and elegant drop.

In all honesty, I’m a bit on the fence about this. On the one hand, I quite like and enjoy this. The nose (which is the best part of the experience imo) is just lovely with its mixture of sweet and sour notes and its delicate character driven by floral elements. On the other hand, on the palate it’s still nice, but also it’s very young and youthful, so much so it’s flirting with it being almost under matured.
    • Nose
the first thing that springs to mind is ‘floral’ – with a mixture of delicate, soft and sweet flower notes and some ‘dirtier’ geranium/greenhouse floral notes as well. Herbaceous too, with notes of sage and parsley. The wine cask influence shows up with some clear raisin notes, along with some honey and citrus, perfumed soapiness, and nutty touches of almond and hazelnuts. A nice balance between sweet and sour overall. As this is already a quite delicate and light whisky, I only added a few tiny drops of water, which seem to accentuate the floral notes.
    • Taste
pretty much again what the nose told me, with floral and herbaceous notes leading the way. The sweetness again driven by the raisin notes, backed up by soft notes of honey and honeysuckle and a light vanilla. Quite spirity and grainy/ceral too – there’s no mistaking this being a youngster. A light-medium body only adds to the overall impression of this being a light and soft whisky.
    • Finish
short - medium, slightly spicy and dry, although there is something (more like a sensation of mouth coating spices and herbs than an actual taste) that lingers about for a while.

Very nice fruity and malty nose. On the palate, unfortunately, a flavor dominates that doesn't turn me on.

For me the distillery to keeps eye on. For young whisky pretty good, only real complain for me is the little bit shy nose.
However respect that 100% organic and environment friendly. Bonus is really nice packaging

shy on the nose, there are berries, bread, dust, citruses but also some alcohol is coming from behind

Significantly different then the nose! pear, green apple, sweetness, pepper, juicy

Very promising for one so young…definitely one to watch!

Again emphasized fruity on the nose, slight sweetness in beautiful harmony with sour notes of grapes. With a little time, floral moments too.
The taste is then more on the sour side and slightly tart notes.
Personally, I found Batch 6 to be better because it was more sweet and more balanced; here the sour note is more dominant in the taste and pulls the malt in this direction.
Nonetheless, another successful batch, even if, in my opinion, it doesn't get to batch 6.
Slowly it crystallizes * for me * that the "even" batches (2,4,6) are always a tad better than the odd ones (1,3,5,7) - so I'm looking forward to batch 8. Apparently the upper rows in the warehouse are stored differently ;-)
    @Matt Hastings: keep it up
    [86 - 82 = good whisky -> get a second bottle? Maybe...]
    • Nose
      89 89
light fruity notes of apricot, pear and yellow-green apple; everything underlined with a slight sweetness.
Dried banana chips, slight acidity from juicy pineapple (I haven't had that in previous batches).
Red grapes, slightly sweet, but also with slightly sour nuances.
Vanilla aroma together with a light honey and caramel note. Becomes sweeter over time and something floral also spreads.
A little spice of cinnamon in the background. There is also a very light malt sweetness.
In the nose there is also a refreshing alcoholic freshness from time to time - then you notice the youth again; but is very limited and the alcohol is well integrated.
    • Taste
      85 85
first gently at the start, then a spice of white pepper and nutmeg quickly builds up. It quickly turns into a creamy, viscous mouthfeel.
The fruit no longer looks quite so sweet, the sour notes are more in focus and a slightly tart note also spreads, but without drifting into a bitterness.
Second sip: sweeter (powdered sugar), (green) fruity, more (green) grape notes. However, the sweetness cannot keep up with the sour notes - an "imbalance" remains.
    • Finish
      80 80
the weakest part of this malt: the slight acidity of the fruit remains for a medium time, the bitter note (dark chocolate) remains for a while longer.
At three years, however, nothing else to be expected.
