I was immediately attracted to the wonderful color. I hadn't tried Royal Brackla before and I wanted to try it out.
The price is still okay with the key data.
I am pleased that distilleries like this one seem to be more responsive to the wishes of their customers: dispensing with cold filtration and coloring, as well as bottling with increased alcohol content.

      My advice:
A whisky, especially when it has been reopened, needs enough time in the glass to develop its aromas. This is particularly the case here.
Rather closed at the beginning. Then berry-fruity, spicy and pleasantly oak-tinged aromas unfold. You can clearly see the Oloroso barrel. Very nice.
    • Taste
      86 86
What the nose promises continues in the taste.
A slightly sour (berry) fruity sherry-dominant highland malt is not too sweet with a pleasant oak spice. The berries go towards blackberries or currants. Notes of a beautiful red and gold apple can also be tasted.
There are also traces of nuttiness. Think of almonds.
With increasing time in the glass, a beautiful malt with a fairly diverse spectrum unfolds on the palate.
The alcohol does not sting or sting. At 12 years old, he already seems very mature to me.
    • Finish
      86 86
      Nothing burns here.
It is soft in the finish.
What remains is a sherry-heavy, pleasant impression. The sherry wood is also perceived very positively in the sense of an oak spice. There is some chocolateiness.
      Overall, the finish is medium-long.

A bit rough around the edges (freshly opened at least), but substantially better (@46% abv. now!) than the rather lame first entry of the core range 12 yo introduced a few years back. Good modern sherry cask, some spice, altogether more craftsmen-like than the rather lackluster first range. I hope they continue this new philosophy and it does not become a one-trick-pony. Would love to see a 15 +18 yo version of this juice. :-) Good bang for the buck atm. Recommended.

Perfect Oloroso profile. Chocolate, nutty, dried grapes.

      Medium length, soft finish.

Blind tasted as part of a Highland comparison tasting
    • Nose
      88 88
Very round and delightfully made, sherry, cherries, caramelized apple, rum stew, fruit bread, almonds, whole milk nuts
    • Taste
      87 87
Round, mild, soft, very pleasant "for everyone"
    • Finish
      84 84
Away quickly, too bad. Helps refill;)

  5. LeChiffre scored this whisky 84 points Connoisseur

Smooth malt with a noticeable sherry influence. Sweetness and spiciness are quite well balanced. Very tasty but also nothing to remember. For about 20 euros more there are much better sherry malts (e.g. Glen Garioch 15), so for me a bottle that is not needed.
    • Nose
      86 86
clearly noticeable sherry; dark (berry) fruits; rum raisins; cherries; Chocolate; Coffee with milk, spicy dusty wood notes
    • Taste
      83 83
soft but not powerless; Sweetness to which spicy wood notes throughout stand as a good counterpoint; dark fruits; Spices; cinammon
    • Finish
      83 83
dark chocolate; Coffee; Spices; slightly bitter-tart oak; There is hardly any fruit left here

  6. TP_Wtr scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

Very different from the old version, which had little to offer in terms of aromas and taste at 40%.

The current version with 46% delivers fruity notes with oranges and cherries, nutty and spicy, no alcohol present, mild and slightly creamy mouthfeel, medium-length finish, is fun.

  7. Totoro scored this whisky 83 points Connoisseur

Drowned in darkness, smothered in sherry, overcome by Oloroso... you see where this is going.

Tasty, but it really doesn't matter much anymore who distilled it.
    • Nose
      84 84
Rum-raisin chocolate, cocoa-dusted cappuccino, banana bread, morello cherry, dusty oak.

Rather modern and simple, but otherwise flawless.
    • Taste
      82 82
All of the above, plus cinnamon, tumeric, and cardamom. A bit spicy. Thin in texture.
    • Finish
      84 84
Not too long, on dark chocolate, baking cocoa, ristretto and perhaps a handful of sour cherries.

  10. Don Cassi scored this whisky 81 points Expert Senior

Dark, spicy, dry-fruity and slightly leathery-fleshy, he welcomes me out of the glass. Slight associations of fruit and black tea as well as subtle matches are spreading.

In the mouth it is relatively soft and set with spicy-fruity notes.
The finish is driven by a woody spiciness and a slightly fleshy fruitiness.
    Length: 5/10

Overall quite spicy and therefore far less pleasing than its predecessor, but also more independent and more varied due to the higher alcohol content.

    Rating: B+

Yes sherry cask dominates as expected but it’s not a bad one

  12. g00se scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

Easy drinking sherry malt that doesn't need to hide from the competition in this price range.
Does absolutely nothing wrong and has a nice grip.

After this revision, it showed quite good performance.
In [12 years] & [Sherry] this level should be in the leading position.
Royal brackla gives a very rounded overall, with honey sweetness in addition to Oloroso sherry, with a light body, creating a very balanced and harmonious expression in the mouth, a very good work.
The sum of the taste is 86 points and the price does not affect the rating.
    • Nose
In addition to the dried fruit, caramel, oak, vanilla normally found in Oloroso, I'm pretty sure there's an added honey-like sweetness, these malts were pre-aged in bourbon barrels?
Overall it gives a very refreshing feeling.
    • Taste
Although it says 12yo, the whole thing is very round and the tongue hardly feels any irritation. Maybe the content contains more high-vintage malt?
The aroma felt by the nose is all present, although it is 46% ABV, but because the body is very light, it does not have the heavy feeling of ordinary sherry barrel type whisky, but a just right sweet taste and refreshing feeling.
    • Finish
Mainly honey, others are the common dried fruit, vanilla and other flavors of sherry, which last for a long time. quite comfortable feeling.

  16. DistiLesha scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

This whisky unexpectedly pleased, I expected less from Royal Bracla, the previous release with a blue label was a level lower.
    N:21 T:23 F:21 B:20
    • Nose
Even without knowing the label, anyone who knows will immediately feel pure Oloroso sherry, as if it were it, a lot of wood, mint, wormwood, raisins, grapes, dark chocolate, quite alcoholic, a little lignin and its phenolic component, pomace tones of grapes and slight fuselage that we find in brandy.
    • Taste
Prickly (passes after aeration), bittersweet, quite intense, many grape tones (grape seed, raisins, grape skin), very good, sweetness 7 out of 10, fruity tones, dark chocolate, cocoa, prunes and other dried fruits, strongly tannic and woody, ginger, cinnamon
    • Finish
The oral cavity seemed to be covered with wooden boards, very astringent and dry, prunes, cinnamon, licorice sourness.

  17. djmaxliving scored this whisky 86 points Expert Junior

Strong whisky overall, but lacking at the final stages being a little too spicy on the mouth. Maybe some more balance on the mouth, nonetheless definitely interesting and shouldn't leave you disappointed?
    • Nose
      89 89
Menthol chewing gum, red candy sticks, cool freshness, baked biscuits, toffee, figs, and some chocolate.

Not your typical whisky profile, some good premier casks selected. I detect some Oloroso casks?
    • Taste
      85 85
Oily, thick, spicy, ginger, almonds, light sweetness and chives.
    • Finish
      85 85
Medium, gentle finish and red fruits/ berries. Very suggestive finish?

With more time this malt develops into a nice, round sherry whisky.
Clean affair, I like it a lot.
    • Nose
      85 85
Already very sherry-heavy for me, it seems deep, dark and heavy to me. Takes a little more time in the glass. Then this malt becomes much rounder and more pleasing. More nuts, citrus fruits like lemons / grapefruit. In addition, nice sweet aromas of caramelized fruit, vanilla and grape-nut chocolate. Oak creates a nice contrast. In the background, more fruit then comes to the front. Cherries, berries, oranges.
    • Taste
      85 85
Slightly creamy, soft. Only looks a bit watery with the first sip. Seamless transition to the palate. The fruit and the caramel come across very harmoniously. Sherry is still a priority. Slightly nutty with a good portion of oak spice, which brings a slight bitterness here. This does not make the malt appear too fruity and sweet. Not bad, actually. In the background there are spices, chocolate and some vanilla tobacco.
    • Finish
      84 84
Medium-long finish, a bit bitter and becoming slightly drier, pepper, oak spice, becomes a bit tart as a result, malt, coffee

Unfortunately only had a sample from an online tasting, but the whisky tastes promising and is on my wish list.
Very good price / performance ratio
    • Nose
(Citrus) fruits, oak, sweetness, sherry notes in the background
    • Taste
Spices, sweetness, slightly bitter orange zest, light fruits, (slightly bitter) oak, very nutty and spicy, dark chocolate
    • Finish
Medium-long, becoming dry, slightly peppery spice, a little bit tart oak, sweetness, spices, malt, some coffee

I was very excited about it, but even the time trial brings little pleasure. All in all very reserved, slightly dry, also a bit pungent at times with a tart dry sherry note. A malt I can't find my way into. Tart, dry, somewhat spicy. Sometimes one or the other promising accent flashes. Well, he gets his third chance, eventually.
