I was immediately attracted to the wonderful color. I hadn't tried Royal Brackla before and I wanted to try it out.
The price is still okay with the key data.
I am pleased that distilleries like this one seem to be more responsive to the wishes of their customers: dispensing with cold filtration and coloring, as well as bottling with increased alcohol content.

      My advice:
A whisky, especially when it has been reopened, needs enough time in the glass to develop its aromas. This is particularly the case here.
Rather closed at the beginning. Then berry-fruity, spicy and pleasantly oak-tinged aromas unfold. You can clearly see the Oloroso barrel. Very nice.
    • Taste
      86 86
What the nose promises continues in the taste.
A slightly sour (berry) fruity sherry-dominant highland malt is not too sweet with a pleasant oak spice. The berries go towards blackberries or currants. Notes of a beautiful red and gold apple can also be tasted.
There are also traces of nuttiness. Think of almonds.
With increasing time in the glass, a beautiful malt with a fairly diverse spectrum unfolds on the palate.
The alcohol does not sting or sting. At 12 years old, he already seems very mature to me.
    • Finish
      86 86
      Nothing burns here.
It is soft in the finish.
What remains is a sherry-heavy, pleasant impression. The sherry wood is also perceived very positively in the sense of an oak spice. There is some chocolateiness.
      Overall, the finish is medium-long.

Stately oak note. Fruity with blood orange peppered with cloves. Behind it the sherry pierces through. Some leather. Cedar. Great nose. Looks very mature and elegant.
Then suddenly heavy alcohol on the tongue. Phew, what fooled me there in the nose? Didn't get through at all, the alcohol was so well integrated. But now he is more than present. Not even the very pronounced and tart oak note that comes behind it can hide that. Getting more and more bitter. The beautiful fruitiness from the nose is completely gone. Where's the sherry cask? Only bitter, slightly sour oak.
Departure long, but really very bitter. That's too much for me.

I was really excited after the nose. Unfortunately, this alcohol note on the tongue and the excessively dry oak do not bring me any pleasure. Bad finishing in my opinion.

But I will give it a second chance again, since the reviews here go in a completely different direction and I may not have had a good day.

    Edit: Tasting no. 2
At the first tasting I had actually caught a less than ideal day. In this case I correct the 76p at the time. I can't give more than 80 though. The dry, tart, bitter oak note is still too dominant for me.

Not so long ago, a 16 year old release was quite tasty drinkable sherry whisky ... now we have a 12 year old one, and I won’t say that it has become worse, the barrels have probably become different, simpler, and the whisky has become younger, but in general the whisky is not bad, drinkable , brand holds, and thanks for that)

While the sherry aromas of the previous version, which was bottled a little too weakly at 40%, were of a creamy and sweet nature, more sour and dry notes come to the fore here. For my taste, these do not fit perfectly with the somewhat reservedly matured distillate and provide for one or the other bulky moment. Nevertheless, the step towards increased drinking strength is very gratifying and the malt as a whole is quite tasty.
    • Nose
Fruit aromas of sour cherries and red currants and unripe plums on a basis of crisp "Nicoter" apples and ripe peaches, behind which is a light raisin sweetness, rosehip tea that has been steeped for too long, the acidity sometimes stings the nose a little, and a subtle mustiness always appears again, as if a few of the fruits had left their best days behind and fermenting had already started a bit, the quite clean and lively distillate is free of exaggerated youth and vivacity, far in the background there is a small piece of nougat chocolate and isolated spice components , anise, a pinch of clove powder
    • Taste
Clearly driven by the fire, living barley moments enter the oral cavity, with raisins and nougat the sweetness increases a little before the vinous berries take over the command, sour cherries, tart plums, strawberries, currants, again the rose hip tea, the acidity is broken down by longer chewing, apples and peaches now dare to come out, for the first time the oak also comes out of its hiding place, but remains quite restrained and only adds a few tannins for a slightly tart aftertaste, a bit of leather and tobacco with a thin trace of spice from ground aniseed and clove powder
    • Finish
Rather short, the red-fruity aromas of cherries and berries subside, instead the apples are more evident, a brief alcoholic explosion before a little spicy wood appears, roasted coffee, cocoa, minimal nougat, it ends a little dry, rose hips containing tannins, little leather abrasion

Much better, than boring, 40%, coloured and chill-filtered old version. One the best sherried 12YOs from the massmarket.

  10. Saftkenner scored this whisky 85 points Expert Senior

A nice standard bottling with a very pleasant drinking strength. I couldn't get used to the nose at all, but it went steeply upwards on the palate and the finish is also very pleasant.
    • Nose
      83 83
Sour and red fruity aroma. The alcohol is well integrated, does not reveal any sharpness on the nose, but there are other components that make me uncomfortable and slightly sting in the nose - they remind me of somewhat biting tannin notes. That being said, it's quite an interesting flavor combination. Pickled cherries, cloves, aniseed, gingerbread, musty cloth, a hint of menthol, tannins, caramel, rose water, oak spice.
    • Taste
      86 86
Very spicy on the palate, also slightly tart and slightly oily. Spicy oak, gingerbread, pickled cherries, beechnuts, caramel, anise, cloves, dark chocolate, oregano, linseed, bread dough.
    • Finish
      86 86
Short to medium length finish. Pleasant. Milk chocolate, cream, caramel and cherries.

Royal Brackla 12 years, 46% alc. Original bottling. Expansion: Post-maturation in Oloroso sherry casks

Nose: Pickled cherries, raisins and nougat cream catch my eye first, followed by milky coffee and cloves. In the background are fresher fruit aromas with a delicate acidity, including currants. Also some caramel and leather.

Palate: Milk chocolate with dried currants and cranberries, served with almonds, apricot jam and caramel wafers. I taste rock candy and sultanas as well as a hint of maple syrup. Behind comes darker chocolate with a delicate hint of fresh coffee beans.

Finish: Medium length, sweetened milk coffee with cocoa powder as a tapping.

Conclusion: A readily available standard bottling with a wonderful sherry profile, the Brackla finds the balance between complexity and harmonious enjoyment. 85/100 points (2022).

First dominant dark chocolate and cocoa with some orange and sherry (sherry especially after the first sip then also in the nose). Then menthol and mint take over. The alcohol is well integrated.

  15. Malty1797 scored this whisky 79 points Expert Junior

100% better than the previous official bottling of the 12 yo (40%) which i tried years ago.
But for me, personally, the finish is too much, too strong, overcoats the entire whisky.
The demerara and burnt sugar make me think more of a rum, rather than a whisky.

Having tasting it blind, I would have for sure said that this is a well-made 100-120 Euros/Dollars/Pounds whisky. Absolutely lovely! Imagine 50% chocolate with spices, wood, toffee, caramel, burnt sugar, some unspecified dark/red berries. Sweet/bitter/spicy, not sour though. Perfect ABV. Medium oiliness. Medium to long finish. Highly recommended, especially for the current price of 50-60 Euros!

I was very excited about it, but even the time trial brings little pleasure. All in all very reserved, slightly dry, also a bit pungent at times with a tart dry sherry note. A malt I can't find my way into. Tart, dry, somewhat spicy. Sometimes one or the other promising accent flashes. Well, he gets his third chance, eventually.

Dark, spicy, dry-fruity and slightly leathery-fleshy, he welcomes me out of the glass. Slight associations of fruit and black tea as well as subtle matches are spreading.

In the mouth it is relatively soft and set with spicy-fruity notes.
The finish is driven by a woody spiciness and a slightly fleshy fruitiness.
    Length: 5/10

Overall quite spicy and therefore far less pleasing than its predecessor, but also more independent and more varied due to the higher alcohol content.

    Rating: B+

Smooth malt with a noticeable sherry influence. Sweetness and spiciness are quite well balanced. Very tasty but also nothing to remember. For about 20 euros more there are much better sherry malts (e.g. Glen Garioch 15), so for me a bottle that is not needed.

Very different from the old version, which had little to offer in terms of aromas and taste at 40%.

After this revision, it showed quite good performance.
In [12 years] & [Sherry] this level should be in the leading position.
Royal brackla gives a very rounded overall, with honey sweetness in addition to Oloroso sherry, with a light body, creating a very balanced and harmonious expression in the mouth, a very good work.
The sum of the taste is 86 points and the price does not affect the rating.
    • Nose
In addition to the dried fruit, caramel, oak, vanilla normally found in Oloroso, I'm pretty sure there's an added honey-like sweetness, these malts were pre-aged in bourbon barrels?
Overall it gives a very refreshing feeling.
    • Taste
Although it says 12yo, the whole thing is very round and the tongue hardly feels any irritation. Maybe the content contains more high-vintage malt?
The aroma felt by the nose is all present, although it is 46% ABV, but because the body is very light, it does not have the heavy feeling of ordinary sherry barrel type whisky, but a just right sweet taste and refreshing feeling.
    • Finish
Mainly honey, others are the common dried fruit, vanilla and other flavors of sherry, which last for a long time. quite comfortable feeling.

This whisky unexpectedly pleased, I expected less from Royal Bracla, the previous release with a blue label was a level lower.

    • Nose
Even without knowing the label, anyone who knows will immediately feel pure Oloroso sherry, as if it were it, a lot of wood, mint, wormwood, raisins, grapes, dark chocolate, quite alcoholic, a little lignin and its phenolic component, pomace tones of grapes and slight fuselage that we find in brandy.
    • Taste
Prickly (passes after aeration), bittersweet, quite intense, many grape tones (grape seed, raisins, grape skin), very good, sweetness 7 out of 10, fruity tones, dark chocolate, cocoa, prunes and other dried fruits, strongly tannic and woody, ginger, cinnamon
    • Finish
The oral cavity seemed to be covered with wooden boards, very astringent and dry, prunes, cinnamon, licorice sourness.

With more time this malt develops into a nice, round sherry whisky.
Clean affair, I like it a lot.
    • Nose
      85 85
Already very sherry-heavy for me, it seems deep, dark and heavy to me. Takes a little more time in the glass. Then this malt becomes much rounder and more pleasing. More nuts, citrus fruits like lemons / grapefruit. In addition, nice sweet aromas of caramelized fruit, vanilla and grape-nut chocolate. Oak creates a nice contrast. In the background, more fruit then comes to the front. Cherries, berries, oranges.
    • Taste
      85 85
Slightly creamy, soft. Only looks a bit watery with the first sip. Seamless transition to the palate. The fruit and the caramel come across very harmoniously. Sherry is still a priority. Slightly nutty with a good portion of oak spice, which brings a slight bitterness here. This does not make the malt appear too fruity and sweet. Not bad, actually. In the background there are spices, chocolate and some vanilla tobacco.

A bit rough around the edges (freshly opened at least), but substantially better (@46% abv. now!) than the rather lame first entry of the core range 12 yo introduced a few years back. Good modern sherry cask, some spice, altogether more craftsmen-like than the rather lackluster first range. I hope they continue this new philosophy and it does not become a one-trick-pony. Would love to see a 15 +18 yo version of this juice. :-) Good bang for the buck atm. Recommended.
