Crazy to see young, dark and modern one-dimensional drams scoring 90+, while this one (EDIT:) hits the 90 on average
    • Nose
      92 92
Sweet and sour, unripe banana, pineapple, multivitamin juice and citrus notes; phenolic peat/smoke in the background, also some leather
    • Taste
      91 91
Creamy, ashy and sweet, apple, grapes, hints of tropical fruits, notes of citrus, but also notes of peated grain, delicate peat. very nice
    • Finish
      91 91
Ashy, salty liquorice, again and again short impressions of pineapple and apple peel, what remains is a dry, ashy impression

The best among the TWJ Islay cat series.
    • Nose
      91 91
Juicy peach, strawberries and mangosteen all popped up. It's probably the fruitiest unnamed Islay near the early 90s that I had nosed. A bit of smoke from burning newspaper and dried leaves arrived after some time in the glass, joined by sweet yellow pomelo and golden gooseberries. After a sip, some medical notes were added too.
    • Taste
      92 92
Yellow peach, sweet green grapes, aloe vera and prunes, it's also very fruity on the palate. Thin smoke arrived after probably 10 seconds like a perfect decoration, it strengthened into greener notes like wax gourd skin and moss later. I love the change.
    • Finish
      90 90
Paraffin that's slightly burnt with rising smoke, it became quite medicinal in the next 5-10 seconds. The transformation didn't stop here, dust, dried fig floss, scone, wafer biscuits, leaf mustard and espresso were also present. More fruits after the second sip, rambutan for a short while before returning to burnt wood, liquorice, seirogan and rotten tree leaves.

Tropical fruit, ash and butter on the nose, with plenty of candied lemon peel and smoked marzipan. Very elegant and dense tropical oil on the palate, with smoked lemon and vanilla tar. More herbal on the finish with eucalyptus smoke mixed in with the pineapple candy and lemon oil. A beautiful example of how well peat and tropical fruit go together (as if it needed reminding!), especially if you suffer the common hardship of not having access to 60's and 70's Islay! (and to a lesser extent the very best '92 Ardmores).

Freshly poured it is intensively fruity: pear, apple, delicate orange, peach and a hint of tropical fruits with tender smokiness in the background. After a few minutes the smell becomes much more sour with citrus notes (lime) the smokiness still stays in the background. Then tropical notes emerge: mainly mango & pineapple enriched by salty sea breeze. As the smell is changing minute by minute the signature Laphroaig medicinal smokiness becomes more and more prominent, however this smoke is tamed and sophisticated.
    • Taste
      91 91
At first intensive & sharp flavours attack: peat smoke, citrus fruits but the sweet side also arrives (pineapple & mango) offset by dryer, oaky-spicy notes. Like the smell the taste is also not static: after the 3rd slip it becomes much more sophisticated: sweeter and more fruiter.
    • Finish
      91 91
The finish is long and intensive; at first strong and mouth warming but what makes it truly great: the flavours come in several waves: it’s like starting over again. Sweet fruits, citrus, floral notes and tamed smokiness. Interestingly it gets sweeter and more floral over time.

Without question this is a beautiful Laphroaig, a complex and ever-changing malt. Take your time with it, your patience and care will be rewarded.

N: peat smoke, fruity, alcohol punchy, barley sweetness, vanilla, citrus zingyness, very creamy, grassy, it needs time
P: strong spice, creamy, mineral notes, salty, costal character coming through
F:lemon zest, peat lingers, a bit of a spice
very delicate dram that needs time. It develops very nice, but still light body and not overly complex. Not more than 6.5/10

    Michelangelo

Argh... Joeri, you're keeping us in suspense again by not revealing which Islay distillery this 30-year-old hails from. Anyway, then we'll leave that in the middle. Distilled in 1990, this malt can already come to the fore with a maturation of no less than three decades. You don't come across that so often, do you? Let me get straight to work.

Pleasant, somewhat understated and surprisingly (well, after 30 years) fruity nose on orange, pineapple and quite a bit of lime. After a few minutes in the glass (it’s worth it!) it actually becomes tropical! Apricots, grapefruit, mango. Delicious. In the background I get a salty breeze and a nice touch of white pepper, dark honey and sweet barley sugars.

Oh, my! If taste was a sculpture, then this malt was created by Michelangelo! Chiseled is the word I’m looking for. Clean. Razor sharp but oh so delicate at the same time. A cartload of fruits, tropical like on the nose with even more lime, some soft herbs and an unexpected hint of potpourri. And in the meantime, the peat provides a nice smoke development that will not dominate at any time, but makes the distillate shine.

That potpourri translates into a floral, slightly perfumed finish that is nice and spicy and continues to reverberate for a long time. The smoke lingers, but is delicate and graceful.

Wow, what a great malt! My brain whispers Caol Ila to me, but I really don't know for sure. Sister cask #4404302 – which yielded 242 bottles at 49.8% – was bottled exclusively for Singapore. This gem puts you back about 290 EUR, but that's spent with pleasure!

Kudos to The Whisky Jury, this is another great bottling from them. Remarkably classic, the initial fruity, floral, malty and marine character of this bottling will delight fans of fruity Islay whiskies. After this, full of passionate and inspiring energy, it allows itself to express an incredibly rich and exotic beautiful way. This dram invites me to take my own sweet time to enjoy the fruity, floral and marine landscapes, reaching the peak in a spirited and wonderfully expressive finish that continues right to the empty glass.

Gentle and soft. Aromas of orange blossom, candied apricot and tropical fruits appear together on a very fresh and dynamic initial nose. This stunning, fruity rancio then develops into new citrus fruits of lime & grapefruits and notes of delicious honey. Gradually, the aromatic palate becomes intensifying exotic such as mango, passion fruit and Kaffir lime. Allowed it to breath, it becomes increasingly complex, developing notes of briny, salty, light peat, pepper and camphor. With drops of water added, then the malted barley decided to take charge. It is now more radiant, the notes of malted barley appears alongside with orange zest, jackfruit, pineapple, banana, lemon and mango before the soft peat and light smoke takes on the fruity notes.
    • Taste
      92 92
Delicate, clean and precise on arrival. With the same radiance, the malted barley holds the floor. Then, it invites to the table a variety of fruits, including pineapple, jackfruit, juicy pear, mango, apple and honey. Mid palate is exotic, nobly malty and lends huge momentum to the start of the palate. The end of palate is herbaceous and lush, with hint some red fruits of pomegranate. With water, salty and peat resurfaced with more fruity sensation dresses the taste bud, refreshing them as it does so. Next, fine notes of honey and heady florals gradually intensify the entire palate of flavours.
    • Finish
      92 92
Medium long. Aromas and flavours of fruits perfumed the end of the palate which also bring the finish lots of energy and even emphasise its sweetness. Soft peat and light smoke are present throughout without ever overpowering the taste buds. This allow exotic fruits and sweetness to bring lots of complexity to the end of the finish. Retro nasal reveals delicious citrus fruit zest and honey. Empty glass is intensely fruity, floral and smoke with some hint delicate notes of musky.
