Very nice classic dram. If it hadn't been so agressive all the way through I would have rated a few points higher. I never add water for my reviews, but I think a few drops would benefit this one.

Honey, vanilla, classic notes. Orange oil, toffee, a bit of furniture polish, light dried fruits, some sherry notes, lightly smoked oranges, waffles, custard, a light hay, very light smoke. A bit of strawberries with milk show up after tasting.
    • Taste
      89 89
Very tasty dram, classic style. Made my eyes water a bit to begin with, the alcohol definitely has some bite, black pepper and wood spices, but also lots of juices, orange oil, lemon zest, apple juice, barley, and quite a lot of oaky bitterness. A very light smoke note and some leather. Very nice start. Second chew has a bit more bite, some fresh ginger also shows up, more wood spices, vanilla cream, more smoke. Ginger is quite present. Good level of cooked carrot sweetness, very nice. Third chew is a bit drier, and the alcohol bite is still quite strong. A bit of a challenger, this one. Really warm, with notes of strawberry and fig jam, tobacco leaf, leather, custard. Really nice, but a bit intense, would probably benefit from a drop of water.
    • Finish
      88 88
Incredibly warm, peppery, light wood spices, good dose of smoke, ginger, leather, light carrot sweetness, little bit of custard. Goes on straight.

with water less nuts on the nose, looks fresher, vanilla, apple, buttery shortbread, the finish is pleasant

Full, strong hazelnut and lots of berries, especially blackberries and some strawberries, subtle sweetness of caramel, the alcohol is quite present, the wood is quite evident
    • Taste
strong attack, fat, creamy sweetness with some berries and red fruit, then the alcohol hits quite clearly, pepper, wood
    • Finish

    Grand

This Auchroisk was part of the Special Releases from Diageo in 2010. A little less than 6.000 bottles were filled at a strength of 58.1%. It’s a combination of American and European oak. Last November I tried the 30 years old that was presented in 2012. I am very much looking forward to this one.

Complex and very aromatic, that is the least you can say of this nose. Very fruity on banana, peach, pineapple, oranges and quince. Wonderful honey and quite a bit of almond oil. Coconut and buttercups. Sultanas and some candied lemon. A bit zesty, a bit waxy.

On the palate it is very sweet and fruit, but immediately very, very spicy. Both the alcohol and a spiciness as if from allspice, white pepper and liquorice makes me gasp for breath for a moment. Once the malt has settle on your taste buds, it offers a lovely panoply of white and yellow fruit, both European and tropical, upholstered with laurel and green spices. Very creamy, by the way. Grand.

The finish is very long, warm and mildly drying, but remains deliciously sweet until the death.

Very impressive Auchroisk indeed! The difference with the 30 years old is pretty small. Too small to warrant the difference in price. I’ll take this one!

As is often the case, real pearls are hidden behind less known distilleries. This is one. With not too high expectations, I approached this whisky and its gradually developing complexity and its wonderfully structured aromas could really inspire me. The mixture of American and European oak barrels has resulted in a very balanced taste experience here. And I think that's also such a whisky that will benefit a lot from a longer open bottle.
    • Nose
Immediately I have an incredible spice in my nose, which probably comes from the barrels. Under the rather dry-acting calibration load, sweet malty notes and, above all, light raisins and a creamy quince jelly are concealed. In addition, sour-sour lemon zest, ripe apples, lightly roasted hazelnuts and hard pears. Even oak wood is always present with beautiful crunchy aromas after deposited dry logs.
    • Taste
The high alcohol content makes it start warm and peppery, dry seasoned oak and spicy honey fight for the flavor predominance, which ultimately emanates in favor of the beautiful full sweetness. Overall, the body is heavy and oily, spicy green olive oil, ripe mirabelles, crunchy green apples, cooked pears with cloves and again beautiful pickled raisins further round off the flavor and open up ever new profiles. The oak remains always present and underlays everything with a beautiful carpet of dry tannins and deep dark chocolate. Delicate roasting aromas are reminiscent of a strong espresso.
    • Finish
Wonderfully sweet ripe apricots and peaches, fresh malt and the sweetness of fresh barley stalks. Getting fatter and creamy-sweet, the finish is eternal and I continue to wear it for a long time.

    • Nose

It starts quite friendly, with soft notes to honey, oaken tones, vanilla, chocolate chip cookies and creamy cake. Nice depth in this one. After a while it becomes more pronounced, with some oranges next to the earlier mentioned notes.
    • Taste
      87 87
according to the label, this one has has quite some alcohol, but it just gives me a small delicate burn after a while. Wet leaves, laurel leaves, some spices and herbs you would use in a nice stew, mocha and a hint of caramel. Nice thick mouthfeel as well
    • Finish
      87 87
Long and oily, sweet wood with some assortment of nuts. after a while it dies away with a nice coffee candy lingering sweetness with some drying old oak.

    Very strong, but delicious.
    • Nose
It begins discreetly. Almost like hay in the meadow. Behind a sweet cherry compote. But the oak is not too short. He needs some time ...
    • Taste
A wonderful oak aroma in the taste ... and then comes the bums! Nice start. Very spicy in the taste, the hay stays in the head. Very dry on the tongue, wood and dust.
    • Finish
The finish is long, with soft wood notes.

    89/100
    • Nose
malty and nutty, dark caramel, stuffed apple. very intense with a little oak. it´s not really complex but very intense.
    • Taste
add some honey to the nosing notes. other than that very similar. quite strong. the oak is coming through a little more. with water: swims very well, gets rather spicy on allspice and oak.
    • Finish
      long, nutty, spicy

I like the profile. Stand out from other malts quite clearly.
    • Nose
Oha, he is intense and can handle a bit of water. Said and done. Now it will be interesting, cherries apple, vanilla but also a noticeable sweet Sherryanteil, smoldering candle wick (that's an association ), later become the citrus dominant, honey and a hint of milk chocolate, buttery. In the second nose clearly sweet, vanilla and really violent Butterstreusel and Butterscotch
    • Taste
directly buttery, light oak, nuts, herbs, oranges, dark chocolate, cookies but also spicy
    • Finish
Oak, creamy buttery, peach, coffee, ginger, dark chocolate, long-lasting, (are there subtle smoky notes?)

  23. wbarchive_104650 did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

That's a wolf in sheep's clothing! The nose is totally discreet and soft ... and then he has one go. Gentlemen! Powerful, spicy and intense. I think a little smoke (or is it the alcohol?) is there too. With a little bit of time something fresh comes ... apple or hay or something ... no idea. Everything very difficult.
The finish is also very intense, but could be a little longer ... I have to correct, the second sip is the finish neatly long.
    I like him!
EDIT: ahhh, there has to be some water inside. Then the nose comes out well and puts it on again.

That's my first tasting now. Luckily I have another 5cl-Samlpe. He is really interesting. I do not want to give a rating yet.
Second tasting: shit is good! Still quite changeable the good. The nose is discreet. Taste and finish then pretty good on the mouth. But I have to drink water. Without me he is too violent. Yes, I am a sissy.

    WITH WATER

The nose opens up nicely on toffee flapjack and a pineapple (possibly)

The palate is very fizzy now and the spiciness is more evident.

Finish is longer now with a sweet finish.
    • Nose
Buttery and honeyed with some orange notes are my initial thoughts.
    • Taste
Much more power than I was expecting, there is a little bitterness but also some sweet caramel mixed in with biscuit.

Toffee comes through with a little Turkish delight.
    • Finish
Medium length on ginger spice and biscuit.

Nose: Malty. Caramel cookies and butterscotch puddin’. Biscuity. Nutty notes. Muted orange and tangerine. Maybe peach. Toasted marshmallow. Vicks Vapo-rub. Freshly painted walls. Oh, man…the depth of balanced spice. Thick, creamy and syrupy. A pleasure to nose.

Palate: Concentrated orange notes and cinnamon. Like chewing on raw bread dough. Baked pastry and maybe some raisin scones. Mint. Finish is long. Keeps on keepin’ on.

This is a whisky of depth and complexity. A hell of a dram that should have been packaged for the masses and have made its way into general release ages ago.

Sweet fruity notes in the nose, as if you walk through a fruit market. A little smoke, more in the background and some spicy oak. The taste of ripe fruit, vanilla and toasted bread, remains on the palate. Very complex whisky which may like to be diluted with water. In the long finish come back the fruits, a sugary sweetness and spicy herbs, slightly astringent in the end, but is common with almost 60v%.

    From the bottle:

Deep and rich nose; creamy and nutty with ripe fruit. Rich array of flavours from toffee to fresh fruits and biscuit. Hints of plum pudding. Creamy oaky-dry finish.

  38. Ralph Hiltrup did not rate this whisky Expert Senior

    Producer`s Tasting NotesNose: No
or very little nose prickle; immediately deeper and richer than you
might expect. Starts as creamy, nutty, vanilla toffee, crème brûlée
perhaps, with syrup sponge in the background. Then fresher traces of
fruit cake mix, or a bunch of sweet, ripe dessert grapes (each
suggesting a little European oak) and apple dumpling, eventually
becoming an entire fruiterer`s shop. Adding a good splash of water
delivers a sweet and fruity nose; light, but with some depth. There`s a
clear Speyside focus, with tinned fruit and an underlying rich,
    Christmas pudding-like maltiness.

Body: Medium oily. Creamier with water.

    Palate:
Warming at cask strength. Rich and nutty yet also dusty. Then, in turn:
toffee, caramel, tangy fresh fruits; biscuit, short pastry, fig rolls.
With water the mouth-feel is more soft and creamy and the taste is sweet
throughout, suggesting hints of plum pudding and brandy sauce.

    Finish:
Short. Dark, earthy chocolate and hints of tropical fruit. Later
oak-dry on the palate. With water, some sweet cider-apple tartness and
    even more seductive, creamy oak.
