Whisky Reviews for Secret Skye 2003 Sb

This "Secret Skye" is not that "secret" at all, because at 17 years of age, of course, only one distillery is possible. I would never have thought of Talisker blindly - this dram was an interesting experience!

The 53.4% are well involved. I find the aroma to be quite voluminous, medium-heavy, slightly greasy and quite round. Vanilla sauce, jam, jam, chocolate strawberries, cooling mint and a touch of Haribo Primavera are very closely interwoven. After a little longer, shortbread biscuits and more tropical fruits come to the fore. Surprisingly sweet for a Talisker matured in a bourbon barrel.

For me an unusual and yet very coherent nose that can be examined more closely.
    • Taste
      87 87
On the one hand powerful and with a typical chili catch, on the other hand silky and oily in the mouth with a compact fruitiness encased in tingling spices. Then ends in orange jam and apple juice.
    • Finish
      87 87
Medium length, here too chilli and spices are the clearest features. Still juicy and benevolent with relatively little wood influence.

    Really nice part.

Definitely salty, rusty Skye DNA. Clear bourbon nose with vegetal accents. More glue than fruit to begin with.
    • Taste
      86 86
The taste is not very smoky and only slightly peppery, but a bit herbaceous and tart. Alcohol well integrated, but relatively tame overall.
    • Finish
      86 86
The finish is very fine and has a dry finish.

The nose of the Never-ever-Talisker immediately after pouring: to kneel down. However, the start is hardcore. But then there is a wonderful bourbon and virgin oak presence, paired with my fine sweetness ... but also without a chili catch. That was at the beginning ...

A very atypical Talisker because it is unpeated.
Not bad at all, plus the malt has a nice oily mouthfeel. However, if you expect Talisker, then at most the sharpness in the finish is a hint. In blind tasting I would overlook that as barrel flavoring. In my opinion, this Secret Skye is 'just' a run-of-the-mill whisky from the ex-Bourbon barrel.

Nose: initially closed, only opens slowly, but then reveals a round sweetness, vanilla, a few light fruits, some honey, mineral and slightly musty notes

Palate: with a surprisingly voluminous start, there is more, mineral, a few light fruits, a little vanilla, the chilli catch slowly sets in

Finish: medium-long, warm, mineral and the typical Talisker chilli catch that works well even without smoke

Rating: where's the smoke? It is definitely good. The mineral has something, and the Chili-Catch gives the whole thing that certain something, but without smoke I'm missing something here, and my nose remains rather closed. As with the sister barrel (https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/177025/skye-2003-sb) there are only 6/10 or 86/100 from me.

In itself a decent to good dram, but I am / will not be a fan of Unpeated Talisker ... without the smoke there is just something missing ...
    • Nose
      Quite closed at the beginning.
Takes a long time before it starts to open up.
      Vanilla pod. Floral tones. Tangerine,
      Lime, mineral. Marshmallows.
      Sage cools the nose.
    • Taste
Powerful start. Spicy honey. Pineapple. Herbs. Chili. Powdered sugar.
    • Finish
      Medium long and quite spicy.
