Rich, comforting, chocolatey notes certainly put this one in the 'winter warmer' category.

There is not much to add to the description and assessment by Dominikbraun of October 23, 2021, I have had similar experiences with this malt. The nose is vinous, full of red fruits with Christmas spices and cocoa. On the palate, the bouquet from the nose is only a relatively bland affair. Pepper and alcohol dominate, the aromas only seem fake. It is no longer harmonious, balanced. The same applies to the finish, where milk chocolate and nuts are added. But everything is too angular and too edgy.
With a slight reduction in alcohol content to around 43%, the stinging and scratching recedes into the background and leaves a little more space for the fruit, chocolate and spices. Unfortunately, the finish then becomes shorter.
Whichever way you look at it, I mean it's not worth €90, maybe in the 40-max range. €50
I can't get more than 86 points, and only with good will on a cold winter's day.
Maybe adding some water won't be necessary once the oxygen in the open bottle is going to act on this malt.
Addendum 01/21/2023: Now I also have a little bit of acetone in my nose. Reduce to 84 points.

Fantastic nose with notes of leather, sherry sweetness and plums. Unfortunately, the taste flattens out, and there is a slight alcoholic note in the finish.

Cherries (mostly dark, some maraschino) in mulled wine, cherry liqueur and caramel crème brulée, apple cider, cardamom, sugared ginger, malt, digestive biscuits, and in the finish: beeswax, shaved orange skins, and late in the finish some London Fog (Earl Grey tea, steamed milk, and vanilla syrup).

First crack, I liked it (86). The next day, it was even better (87). The day after, the finish was working much better and sticking around longer (a good long length) (88).

Due to the Glenmorangie tasting notes, I expected the winter and Christmas whisky badly.
In general, it's a delicious whisky, but whether it's worth €80 is something everyone has to decide for themselves, for me it's not. It's too flat for that.

So, winter seems to be coming to an end, and I'm posting a review of the winter-Christmas story just now ... although this does not beg for all the advantages of the new limited release from Glenmorangie

    ???? Color: copper

???? Aroma: somewhat closed at first, but after standing this whisky blooms... chocolate-raisin aromas... creamy fudge, spicy sweet spices... wine barrel... light notes of sweet pipe tobacco... sweet shop... distant nutty flavors... a mixture of sweet dark berries and chocolate again...)

???? Taste: dry... a bit lacking in fullness and density... at the same time, the whisky is exceptionally drinkable... tobacco-chocolate-confectionery motifs in taste resonate with the aroma, while at the same time more sweet and spicy ones appear in the foreground spices... and a little peppery bitterness...

???? Finish: the aftertaste is rather average... tart-sweet... tobacco, spicy spices and a slight sweetness mixed with bitterness at the very end...

???? Conclusion: the release turned out to be quite interesting, at first it “kicks” a little, but after standing it opens up with a diverse bouquet of aromas, and the basic DNA of Glenmorangie alcohols is very clearly traced. Personally, I took myself another bottle to use in the bar, and of course in the collection for the older limited brother A Tale Of Cake.

    ???? Points: 87

Felt like this one could've been much more than what it was. Not worth the price i'm seeing it for, but definitely a step up from Tale of Cake, still fails to deliver for its price tag in my opinion.

Fruity yet dry on the nose. Some nuttiness and weak chocolate. Some dried mango
    • Taste
      85 85
Red fruits with a little bit of tropical fruits on the side. Has a spiciness that is a bit unique, more peppery and chili, but then goes into macadamia (i think official notes say Brazil nut, which is accurate). There is a sweetness but it turns into the peppery spiciness pretty quickly.
    • Finish
      80 80
Nutty, chilli, and very short. Gets somewhat better with more sips, but turns into something strange that I'm not sure I really enjoy? It's fine but if not weird.

When it comes to the nose I'm a bit ambiguous, but in the end it's too artificial for me, the taste is pleasing and incredibly tasty. A typical Glenmorangie, actually. Can you make more of it? Perhaps. But do you have to? You can also make the best of what you have - 01/04/2022

Aroma: intense, spicy, woody, but at the same time very sweet and fruity - (Classic Marsala aroma with slightly oxidized fruit. Hints of orange caramel blend with the fragrant tone of lavender honey and sweet rose.)
Official: The experience begins with light bursts of fruit and honey, passing through influxes of cocoa powder, red pepper chips and pieces of para nut caramel. In the end, it culminates in a feeling that swirls with cinnamon, ginger and cloves
Taste: very tannic, woody - cask driven, chocolate, pralines, cinnamon - (slightly spicy mouthfeel leads to an explosion of sweet, nutty flavors - coconut powder, red pepper, para - caramel and sweet barley malt.)

    Hi Dominikbraun,
I can tell you why Glemorangie can't do it better. They have absolutely no interest in doing more than necessary. The distillery is owned by the Louis Vuitton Group.
So it's all about earning as much money as possible with as little effort as possible. Therefore all special bottlings of the last few years have got worse and worse and the marketing has got better and better. So why sacrifice too much a good barrel when that's enough?
All very sad. The same with Bruichladdich's Black Art. After 4.1 a new master distiller came. He thought he could take a few bad kegs with him, doubled the price and limited the whole thing. The distillery wanted to skim off the money immediately, which actually slowly developed later in the collector's market. Conclusion: bad whisky, exorbitant price.

  48. dominikbraun scored this whisky 85 points Connoisseur

    I am somewhat at odds.

On the one hand, you can rely on the Marsala barrel for this whisky, at least in terms of its aroma: it brings the red, sweet fruitiness that I like so much.

On the other hand, the malt appears flat and angular in some places. I don't know how Glenmorangie keeps doing this. The Quinta Ruban no longer tastes really good at the end, the Tale of Cake was far too youthful, especially in the finish, and the Tale of Winter also apparently lacks maturity - after 13 years!

It is as if the aromas were floating on the spirit like bath ducks. In terms of aroma, it doesn't look bad at first, until you keep seeing the spirit flash through between the bath ducks. These rubber ducks then get stuck on the tongue and in the finish only the spirit remains. The finish is correspondingly flat. It's not exactly youthful, but far too rough for a 13-year-old whisky with a Marsala finish.

So: wasted potential! And I have no idea why Glenmorangie isn't doing any better. Expertise would actually be available.
