Interesting, complex and changes with water.
All in all a great malt that just missed the 90s, because the alcohol notes can be felt in all areas with water.
But truly a malt with character.

Alcohol is immediately noticeable. But then dark cherries combined with dark chocolate. In addition a certain seasoning. And something towards mahogany wood. It takes time, then there is leather and walnut.
It evolves with water. More towards raisins, plums and cinnamon. Great and beautifully complex.

A sweetness spreads. It stays with the cherry and plum. Goes in the direction of this plum liqueur from the Chinese restaurant, but clearly accompanied by a strong flavor.
    • Finish
      87 87
The wort is still very present. Likewise the alcohol notes (also with water). Plus plum, a noticeable dryness and licorice.

I thought this was a spoiled sample as it appears to be quite cloudy in appearance.
Spice , fruit and some peat on the nose with basically full on toffee & caramel palate , this is a sweet one.
Decent stuff but a little sweet for me

with water: it tolerates a lot of water without even appearing to be thin, especially in the taste water helps very well, in the finish it is pressed more towards licorice / licorice root

Conclusion: This is a PX bomb. Give him time, give him water and you will be rewarded with a fantastic PX malt, even if there is nothing left of the distillery character
    • Nose
      91 91
great and interesting sweetness, intensely caramelized walnuts, plum, raisins, subtle oak flavor (clove, cinnamon and liquorice), a little chocolate, grape sweetness, balsamic vinegar
    • Taste
      90 90
very juicy, you can chew it really well, very intense grape sweetness, reminiscent of raisins and plum wine, the oak flavor carries the malt, but does not overload it, the walnuts from the nose come back with a little dryness, the alcohol is good but not perfectly integrated
    • Finish
      90 90
medium to long, grape sweetness, plum, raisin, dark chocolate, walnuts, clove again at the back, and almost dust-dry in the end

According to the distillery shop is has been in ex-Bourbon for 7 years and matured/finished in PX for the last 10 years.

Amongst other 275 spirits eligible for the award, this was the deserved winner of the 2019 Whisky Fringe Festival (Royal Mile Whiskies)!!! Wonderfully intense and fruity. Swims also very well.....
