The latest release in the Islay Barley range is now 8 years old. I’m guessing the 2 year break between the last release and this have allowed an older age statement. It has all the characteristics of a high quality bottling given its relative youth. For my particular taste, I prefer the 2011 vintage but we'll see how it changes over time. Value (£50) : 8/10
    • Nose
The nose is fruity and distillate driven, as expected. Wonderful floral and big cereal malt notes. Slightly farmyard like but not as much as I found in the 2011 vintage. Bright citrus with lemon spritz and orange pith. Fresh green apples and pears with some tropical kiwi as well. Theres a salted butteriness to this nose as well. Vanilla sugars not as dominant as previous expressions. Then comes a salty sea air. Very good.
    • Taste
Creamy in mouthfeel. It is definitely very fresh and sweet. Less wine influenced and far more ex-bourbon oak dominant. Honeyed cereal grains with chopped apples and kiwis folded into it. Lemon spritz again with more of a bitter-sour grapefruit note. Salted caramel over a buttery vanilla sponge. Light heat of white pepper and a touch of tobacco from the oak.
    • Finish
Medium in length, but the mouth coating, oily texture at the end is lovely. Less sweet here, the more spicy oak tannins come through with drying tobacco and more of a black pepper spice. Dark chocolate as well. A lingering salty minerality runs throughout the top of the palate.
