Whisky Reviews for Mannochmore 2008 PSL

  1. MadMaster scored this whisky 91 points Specialist

For such a relative young whisky this is the evidence that age isn't always saying something. Perfectly balanced, love it!
    • Nose
Fresh bread, yeast, some citrus and clementines. A bit dirty earthy, but in a good way.
    • Taste
Again sweet & sour citrus fruits, peardrops + sweet biscuits ('Brusselse kermis' cookies as we name them in the Netherlands). For 55,4% ABV it's really mild. No water needed.
    • Finish
Medium long, with sweet flavours on top.
Some caramel, creamy milkchocolate, like Belgian pralines.

    Serge's notes: http://www.whiskyfun.com/2021/Today-Mannochmore-2008.html

I find this label utterly stunning, given that I'm a huge fan of woodcuts and antique ex-libris. Stunning, extraordinary, greatest label this year and so far… Hope they'll sell the artwork as prints. Colour: white wine. Nose: and the whisky's not half bad! Perfect mentholy and lemony and gristy doughs and breads, wonderful whiffs of fresh sourdough, lovely ueber-fermentary profile… This is almost orange whisky, as in orange wine. Indeed, homemade yoghurt too. Weissen beer. With water: we're bordering gym socks at times, but that's no problem. Fermentary, he said. Mouth (neat): and there, some lemony sweetness, limoncello, lemongrass, more white beer, dough, proper porridge… With water: butterscotch! Some wizard of cask management was involved here, I'd bet the farm on that. Finish: and there, praline, shortbread, beer, panettone, limoncello, tiny touch of soy… Comments: riiiiight up my alley. But Mannochmore? As in Loch Dhu?

A have a weak spot for these somewhat quirky whiskies. There is a fresh, sweet and sour side, that reminds me of those citrussy double IPA's. So yes, malty and porridge-like but also quite complex. Has some old skool vibe to it, altough I do not now why exactly. Maybe it's a certain grassy minerality that reminds me of Clynelish combined with this dirty little notes in the back (drying, earthy, bitter ones but giving it depth). A while ago I had a young Glen Ord from Cadenhead that had a similar vibe to it. Intriguing stuff, really glad I bought a bottle. 89/90 pts.

It mainly stinks at first, most of all puke. Smoked cheese and nuts. Later apple, especally with a splash of water.

So much better. Apple, vanilla and pecan. It has a light dirty edge, but not in a negative sense anymore.
    • Finish
      86 86
Pecan, apple, vanilla and sugar-coated peanut.

I bought this bottle because I read WhiskyFun for fun. Serge happened to score this 90 points.

If you were to tell me this was one of those high ABV'ed Rare Malts, I would believe you. It's a bit austere, but interestingly complex enough to make you go ok, let me see what you got. New make, lemon, rye bread, dried herbs, a bit of burnt grass smell.
    • Taste

Pretty strong stuff. To be honest, it's somewhat brutal in a softer, somewhat approachable way. With water, some sour components are discernible, but don't add too much. Again, it's got that new-make notes that are not very complimentary, and even has hints of puke.
    • Finish

Finish is not long... and a bit flat. Not very pleasant, at least for me. Will pour this for my non-whisky friends.
