Apparently two distilleries have birds in their logo - one being Auchroisk, the other Glen Elgin. I have no idea which one this malt comes from, but I certainly like what is in the bottle. Very honey forward with red berries accentuating the treble. Feels like it's balanced quite well.
    • Nose
Sugar, raspberries, lemon, floral, acacia honey, orange peel
    • Taste
Zingy lemon juice, honey, berries, white pepper, oily texture, slightly malty, slightly floral, brown sugar
    • Finish
Dark honey, floral, some lemon zest, above average in length

Idiosyncratic, even strange whisky, requiring patience and the will to experiment with varying levels of dilution.
    • Nose
      88 88
An alcoholic nip in the nose at first, but that goes away. Sour gummy candies predominate, at least without water. When diluted, the Elgin distillate comes out, with super interesting fatty and oily, almost meaty notes.
    • Taste
      84 84
Very much on the spicy / sour / bitter side of the spectrum, to the exclusion of more accommodating aromas, and therefore certainly not easygoing or mainstream. Some may love this unconventional, uncompromising style, but I find it a bit unbalanced and actually somewhat tiring after a while. Don't get me wrong, it works well for a glass or two, but it's not one of the bottles that I'm naturally drawn to when just wanting a nice pour after a long day. A whisky that kind of feels like work, if you know what I mean.
    • Finish
      84 84
Bitter lemon, pear skin, alka seltzer, and pink grapefruit lemonade.

Really good on the palate and on the finish - unfortunately the nose is affected by sulfur notes.

      Sweet and spicy, sherry.
    • Finish
      85 85
Juicy and pleasant. Light spices and heavy sherry.

  8. dominikbraun scored this whisky 86 points Connoisseur

Too impetuous and edgy for a 15-year-old, but overall tasty.
    • Nose
      86 86
Gooseberries, pineapple, light tropical fruits, light wood, nutmeg. With water: honey, tangerine peel, lemon candy. Filigree, but not too complex.
    • Taste
      87 87
Unexpectedly spicy, nutmeg, ginger, yellow fruits, gooseberries again and light wood, quite impetuous, but tasty.
    • Finish
      85 85
The finish is medium length with fruit, spice and oak.

Chalk, mint, rhubarb, pecan pie with vanilla ice cream. Grassy notes and sour gooseberries come through on the palate, with added spiced honey on the finish.

Without a drop of water 85 but after adding 3 drops in 3cl it opened up and much, much more yellow fruits.
    • Taste
      85 85
The sourness and sulphur in the taste dissapointed me someway. I did not expect this after nosing.
    • Finish
      86 86
I like the finish, medium long, spices, green apples after a while.

A note for me. Even if someone pays you for this, they will politely refuse. It is exactly category 84b. The complete pattern of sherry whisky.

Great value for an everyday dram, especially for a 15-year single malt. I am usually sensitive to that sour, sulfury note, but a good nose and the palate is interesting enough each time I revisit the bottle and without that overpowering note. Taking the word of others on it being a Glen Elgin, given some hints of the fruit that I have gotten in other samples from there. Overall, I believe it's a great re-racking job by the Brothers, one of the better ones that I've tried in the past few years.

    Serge at Whiskyfun.com says:

A Speyside Distillery 15 yo 2005/2021 (52.4%, Thompson Bros., 552 bottles) Five stars
Two hoggies blended and finished for two years in oloroso. Some say the bird on the label suggests this is Glen Elgin, which those tax evaders at Google's would confirm. All right, but can you trust Google? Colour: light gold. Nose: nothing says this is not Glen Elgin. Glen Elgin is a superb distillate, with a magnificent fatness, this time we're finding a little miso, mutton suet, then sultanas, fresh mint, more miso… Wow wow wow. With water: the thing is, if this is Glen Elgin indeed, it is a completely outdated distillate, absolutely unmodern, even difficult at times, and certainly a little cerebral. Existential? And magnificent. Mouth (neat): huge, superb, fat, ueberly (what?) assertive, meaty, with a fab sourness. We're bordering cheese at times. With water: oh, please call the Anti-Maltoporn Brigade! Finish: long. Comments: what was that? It's bad whisky, like some of those ugly Picassos, it's just that it would transcend our usual codes and references. Great bad whisky with something pretty Springbanky. Another bad whisky that's fabulous, right? Ooh I feel I'm losing you… And by the way, is it actually Glen Elgin?

    Not enjoyable for me
    • Nose
      78 78
Lot of butterscotch, toffee, overripe fruits, solvent, little vanilla, probably also sulphury notes (even so the leathery notes are missing but there are hints of sweaty socks)
    • Taste
      76 76
Little punchy, spicy, subtle sweetness, little fruitiness, apple, pear, now clear hints of sulphur, damp socks
    • Finish
      74 74
      Medium long, burning, spicy, zesty

some sulfur, cooked fruits, honey, toffee, pleasant

judging by the label this should be an undisclosed glen elgin
