Whisky Reviews for Port Ellen 1983 MoS

[April, 2017]  Another head-to-head tasting day, this time two highly praised Port
Ellen - this 27 years old MoS
edition versus the OB 5th release (25 years old)  https://www.whiskybase.com/whiskies/whisky/680/port-ellen-5th-release.Colour:  The OB is significantly darker than the MoS.

Nose:  Ooohh, both are simply to adore.  Typical PE style and very
complex and rounded.  The MoS has a slighly more powerful profile while
the OB is more balanced with a wider aromas spectrum.  I find the OB
more spectacular (but the vanilla and metallic spike of the MoS is
    great, too).

Arrival:  Bold and mouth-coating on both drams.  Here I prefer the
mouth-feeling of the MoS over the OB as it is slightly more rich.

Body:  The MoS again is less complex in its profile and very sweet
with this typical metallic PE taste (coppery).  The OB is a real stunner
on the palate:  An almost uncountable number of different aromas and
flavours charm your tastebuds, all in great harmony.  Perfectly
balanced, simply exceptional stuff.  Here the OB is unbeatable and wins
    with several points ahead...

Finish:  Long, longer, the longest is with the OB.  It is a little
drying in the end (cold ashes) but this is okay, rather a nice
supplement than unpleasant.  The MoS is defeated again, but it is a
proud runner-up.  Very long finish too on sweet vanilla and peaty notes -
    a great combo.

This was a head-to-head on an exceptional high quality level.  It shows that Port Ellen malts age in dignity...

Peat fat, smoke. Very light encaustic.

Long finish on camphor and peat. Slightly peppery and lemony.

Tried this side by side with another PE I have opened (1983 OMC refill sherry butt 25y #4687) and this MoS is more viscous and warm, and also creamier.
    • Nose
      92 92
Quite pale in color. Very balanced. Peat. Citrus mixed with buttercream and vanilla. The peat is not in-your-face but quite elegant.

A brilliant Port Ellen. Great strength, excellent mouthfeel. A great distillate in a great refill sherry butt cask stripped of most sherry, aged for a long time, could only mean one thing -- sublime. Menthol, eucalyptus, peat, sweet citrus, vanilla, milk chocolate.
    • Finish
      91 91
      Milky. Balanced. Moderate length.

  4. St. Pauli scored this whisky 91 points Connoisseur

This is a sincerely good whisky. It has all the distillery character left, and the refill wood did it's job by washing away the (possible) harsher sides. It's an enjoyable and exciting whisky, almost old textbook: have a good distillate and give it time in not too active wood.
    • Nose
      Colour: pale gold
      Appearance: incredibly slow, thick legs

Oh boy, that's a rather marvellous maritime, peaty nose. It's not agressive at all, not woody and peaty at the same time like all these modern style peaty youngsters. It's rather crisp, clean and salty: smoke of rather soft and mossy peat (yet without TCP and the like), a fair amount of minerality, sea breeze, and fresh lemon. It's simply adorable. Later on, there are more earthy notes, mostly roots and twigs.
    • Taste
It's (still) sweet with a little sting, so I guess it's from the alcohol. With water, it's softer. It's full-bodied, focused on the phenolic side with clean peat smoke, maybe some smoky embers, a bit of gentian tea, and still that lemon rind. It's still quite saline.
    • Finish
Long, still peaty and fiery, with more earthy notes and still that fresh lemon. It goes into the direction of salted liquorice (with not so much added sugar) that goes well with the peat smoke. There is only a soft layer of spice and fresh lemon.

Simple clean Port Ellen. Excellent, but I'm biased.

    Tasting from july 2017.
    • Nose
Smoke, peat, seawater, lemon, tar and mineral notes. No sherry notes. With water : more tar and some medicinal notes.
    • Taste
Not the most chiselled PE but very clean. Lemon and coastal notes again. Smoke, ashes, almond and pepper. With water : smoky lemon juice.
    • Finish
      Long, smoky and ashy.
