Blind tasting: HFW VBT5 sample 6.
I wrote down that it smelled like a peated whiskey from Cooley distillery (note: I'm very unfamiliar with Irish whiskies), but that it seemed too peated for that. I.e. the distillery character is clearly noticeable in this one, but it is indeed more peaty than the one I know already, the Connemara Cask Strength.
    • Nose
Candy upfront: Hard yellow marshmallow (schuimblokken), sugar candy 'necklaces' and wine gums. Peat and peach. Then whiffs of caramel, milk chocolate, salt and something like a garage (car polish and/or motor oil). With water a little vanilla and malt.
    • Taste
The hard marshmallows again. Lime wine gums, Tumtums, peat, peach, chocolate and salt. Water brings out a little cardboard.
    • Finish
Peat, marshmallow, dark chocolate, lime, peach and cigar boxes.

Marine diesel and tool box, but not too intrusive. Getting fruity. Old apple, caramel. Becomes more pleasant and accessible over time.
    • Taste

Hearty, nasty. Red hot steel. Spicy ... Radish maybe? Little fruit. Second starter is sweeter at first, then hot as pepper.
    • Finish
      85 85
Oily finish. Licked too much on the ship's motor once. Sticks to the palate and tongue for a long time!

Anyone who likes this is a dram of moonshine from alcoholic, careful fellas.

    • Taste
strong ethanol, sea weed, brine, burnt rubber, iodine, malt, herbs. Burning body with medium feel

    Proefolympics 2017, day 15
    • Nose
Wonderfully soft, slightly creamy. Pretty nice, besides, smoky on the nose. High in the alcohol percentage, little fruit
    • Taste
      Surprisingly fruity
    • Finish
Tasty, light fruit show ripe apple. Surprisingly fine smoke development

  12. Calmar scored this whisky 88 points Connoisseur

Very, very good, a positive smoky Irishman, close in spirit to the island and insular inscriptions - from the first notes of aroma - association with Ledaig, then, with the departure of rubber - Laphroaig, in taste there are references to Ardbeg and Bowmore; good balance of components, excellent pitchnost, as a whole it is soft and easy - very high fortress is not felt at all.
    • Nose
      Fresh, juicy, rubber, warm and soft - new wheels, porous rubber insulation; soft smoky notes - pine logs, dampness, smells of the bath, smelling of smoke from the plank; Gradually the rubber leaves the smell, giving way to medical tones - iodine, fresh bandages, odors dressing;
    • Taste
Smoke-coal wave, dry peat, activated carbon, resin, pepper in the background, gradually coming forward; fruit and candied sweetness.
    • Finish
        Pepper-resin, coniferous, with medical, medicinal tones; sweet cough mixture, lemon notes;

Tasted it blind during PO2017 (june 2017). It gets better the longer it is in the glass....
    • Nose
First thing that comes to mind is a farm, manure and some dieselfumes. A little sharp in the nose, vanilla, malt and after a while some citrus and ginger, a little sour note
    • Taste
Real sharp and burning on my tongue. Sweet fruity notes, some rubber, coffee and earthy, leather and tobacco
    • Finish
Medium length, rubbery and leathery, some dried fruits and some peat.

Tasted this blind, didn't know this was Connemara.
    • Nose
Soap, solvent, glue, "green", sour like an unripe kiwifruit, smoke (ashy, not peaty), yellow tropical fruit. Smells young.
    • Taste
Peaty and ashy, medicinal, banana, citrus notes from lime and lemon, cardamom. Nice dram, not complex, but ties everything together great.
    • Finish
White pepper, sharp, sugarsweet, warm. Not a very long finish, but it packs a lot.

The Turf Mór is a strong, moderately complex whiskey with a very unique smoky note, which I did not have with one of the many smoky Scots. But this Connemara would have done a long maturation really well! The potentials, which unfortunately only existed in their beginnings, could have developed properly in a good barrel. Especially in the mouth, the aromas are complex, but develop only restrained and more additional spice from the oak barrel would have rounded it all off nicely.
The powerful smoke is wonderfully soft and beautifully integrated into the overall picture, far from the smoke monster, as he is often described! No trace of the real smoke bombs of the nearby island of Islay - here a nice smoky fire crackling fire and burning no fish hall.

I do not understand why this "accident whiskey" was bottled so young. Just such a single piece could have been expanded to a wonderful Irish flagship whiskey! Chance missed.
    • Nose
Citrus fruits, restrained soft smoke, nothing phenolic, malty sweetness, fresh hay, dominant alcohol, with water comes even more sweetness and a slight spiciness,
    • Taste
sweet slightly scratchy smoke, more pronounced than in the nose, vanilla, oak only in batches, the sweetness and a grassy fruitiness provide for salivation
    • Finish
the sweetness and spiciness dissipate quickly, the nice smoke is expected to adhere a little longer, a slight metallic note is also noticeable in the beginning, and also the typical Irish "lubricating oil" is very easily perceptible.

The Connemara is the only smoky Irish whiskey and is made in the Cooley distillery south of Dublin. Unlike the typical Irish whiskeys, the Connemara is distilled instead of three only twice in real pot stills and he comes so close to its Scottish relatives purely in terms of production technology.
The Turf Mór is now something very special: he happened "by mistake". Cooley does not malt and dry the barley himself, but they buy it ready (the Connemara is rumored that the smoky barley is even imported from Scotland) The normal Connemara is only slightly smoky and mixed to produce therefore smoky barley with non-smoky Barley to achieve a mild smoke flavor. In one production cycle, a batch of non-smoky malt was allegedly mixed up and mixed with two smoky barley and then given a very smoky distillate. Instead of disposing of it, this "failed" batch was given the beautiful Gaelic name of Turf Mór, which means "big peat bog" and created a very limited special edition - it was the only accident of its kind at Cooley so far.
I do not understand why this "accident whiskey" was bottled so young. Just such a single piece could have been expanded to a wonderful Irish flagship whiskey! Chance missed.

When it was released the price was fair at a good ABV. Love or Hate Whiskey for most people.
I love the unique earthy taste of this one, winged by Connemara Smoke and sweet Sherry influences.
Earthy is the single best word to describe the Turf Mor in cask strength.
    Very long lasting finish.
Sadly the average rating is lower then it should be, because some people exaggerate and rate the whiskey lower then a red label.

    Tasty Irish, Islay-style
    • Nose
Peat smoke, coastal notes, the smell of a wet forest, unripe white fruit and then some vanilla.

Sweet peat taste, some spicy and peppery, then sweet licorice and honey. In between, a salty tone.

Banana Haribo smoked with 58% alcohol. Whiskey the most undrinkable that I could tasted.

  35. Hans-Ludwig scored this whisky 84 points Expert Senior

The Connemara is very bright, almost pale. As expected, the nose is first powdered with ash. But then many sweet fruits come through and push back the ashes. In the mouth again this combination of smoke and intensely fresh, sweet fruits. A wonderful interplay. The high alcohol content is a bit intrusive and darkens the nice impression.
An Irish whiskey of such intensity: just great. You feel relocated to Islay. For connoisseurs of Islay whiskeys, this Connemara is a must.
