Cinnamon, sweet dates, prune juice, cherry

    Farmer’s Butter

This 19 year old official release of Bladnoch was put together by Master Distiller Dr Nick Savage, who quit his job at Macallan four years ago to put this Lowland distillery back on the map. The malt matured for almost two decades and did so in PX sherry casks.

Oh, this is a nice nose. Apricots, raisins, Christmas cake and farmer's butter. Yes, it even smells greasy. Behind that are some notes of marzipan, vanilla, hazelnuts, nougat and menthol. A hint of baby breath... but completely within limits and then it is an enrichment. I also smell a horse stable in the distance. Fried banana kicks in. There's a lot going on here and I like it.

The body is a bit on the light side, but the taste is good. Less sweet than the nose promised. This is where the rather bitter notes come to the fore. Think walnuts, chestnuts and bitter oranges. Hazelnuts return. But the raisins and apricots have trouble showing themselves. It even becomes very dry and spicy midpalate.

The medium long finish, which starts warm and spicy, evolves from sweet to sour to even a touch salty.

Although this malt largely restores my confidence in Bladnoch, it is still a bit too bitter to completely charm. About 150 EUR.

  4. ffmdino did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

    he needs time
for me it was challenging and difficult
a PX malt in a different way, rather tart
I have to be in the mood for it
not necessarily a candidate for purchase
    • Nose
Leather (starts great later like freshly tanned), sherry, sweetness decreases, slightly cherry, slightly cola, coconut increases, oak (weird + cheese), honey (acacia) comes, late gravy, plum, liquorice

from the 1920s: dusty, dirty, slightly polished, mini-nutty, tingly, chocolate, a touch of cloth/fabric, later some leather
    • Taste
      full and round
Leather, almond?, old oak, chocolate ~70%, sherry, more tart than sweet, slightly spicy
    • Finish
      long (almost sticks)
Sherry (different), mini cola, burnt coffee, late with a tart note

Another Bladnoch in my tasting collection and I am once again impressed.
Lots of fruit, sweetness with the dominance of ripe cherries, as well as delicately oak with leather notes. The finish is long with a hint of bitterness drowned in honey.
    • Nose
      89 89
quite intense, sweet, strong sherry, cherries in liqueur, chocolate, delicately leather, oak with a bit of pipe tobacco
    • Taste
      90 90
sweet, fruity, ripe cherries, black cherry, apricot, sugar syrup, dark chocolate
    • Finish
      89 89
long, sweet, slightly spicy tip with honey and nuts

  6. Koning scored this whisky 87 points Expert Senior

The sweet PX influence pairs well with the Bladnoch spirit. The finish is a bit odd though. For me, it's on the same level of the 14 years old 2021 Oloroso sherry cask release (wb id 179438).
    • Nose
      88 88
Immediately those notes of dried banana and lactic sourness I get with other recent offical Bladnochs. I like it when the distillery character is recognisable! The PX-cask impart a lush sherried sweetness: raisins, chocolate and cherries. The nose has a savoury side too.
    • Taste
      88 88
Rather intensive with sweet raisins, citrus fruit, liquorice, mint chocolates and yogurt (the sour Bladnoch marker?). It has a light spiciness and a hint of sulfur.
    • Finish
      85 85
Starts on sour and bitter tones, before sweetness kicks in: honey, chocolate, sweet citrus fruits morphing into a curious fresh ipa-like hoppiness.

Bladnoch is one of the interesting new Lowland distilleries, although this distillery has been around since 1817. After an eventful history, it was only a few years ago that it was repositioned again - but in contrast to the actual start-ups, it can also fall back on mature whiskys. This is a 2021 released 19 year old PX Sherry maturation. I have no idea how long it was in the sheery cask. The color is strong copper.

    • Nose
The aromas are ripe and powerful. Sweet fruits, yellow plums and peach unfold on a background of vanilla. There are also herbal spices and then wood. It's not brutal or overloaded, has a few fresher fruit flavors with freshly cut red apples. There is also cinnamon in the spice, maybe a hint of clove.
    • Taste
The whisky flows sweetly and velvety on the tongue, but then develops a stronger, alcohol-supported start with a spicy, woody finish. Fruit is there, spice is there - but the fireworks don't really ignite. The whisky tastes good and is mature - but it is not expressive enough and the sherry aroma is somewhat arbitrary.
    • Finish
In the aftertaste fine wood spice with some cinnamon and herbal spices.

This is a nice whisky. But he cannot fully convince me. It seems a bit too thin to me, although the alcohol is strong enough and quite oppressive. But the flavors are too fleeting for me. Ok, it's not a Highlander, it's lighter and fruity. And the sherry flavors are there. But the wow effect that should be there at prices of around €150 is missing a bit. I haven't really warmed up to Blad yet.

Sherry, dried fruit, leather, fruit, citrusy, red berries, spicy wood. Balanced, spicy sweetness, somewhat thin, medium attack, not quite medium intensity.

  9. Martinesk scored this whisky 88 points Expert Senior

Heavy, rich whisky that you don't necessarily want to drink every day. In the right mood, however, he carries you through the entire evening.
    • Nose
      89 89
Fruity sweetness flows temptingly from the glass. The delicate campfire note from pouring quickly gives way to the rich sherry scent. Alcohol perfectly integrated.
    • Taste
      86 86
Walnut, toasted nuts, nutmeg, heavy black wood.
    • Finish
      88 88
Slowly builds to fill the mouth with spiciness and sweetness. Medium to long.

The cup became a bit poor after waking up.
    • Nose
      88 88
Smell very sweet, toffee, candied fruit, red fruit, jam, grapes, a touch of spice, cloves, cinnamon.
    • Taste
      86 86
The entrance is sweet, the fruit is stewed, there is some cream, and then comes out the comfortable spice, cinnamon, cloves, star anise, and at the same time the comfortable red fruit. It is a high concentration of dark chocolate. Full-bodied, medium-greasy, slightly thorny. After the cup is awake, the spice is more obvious, and the bitter bottom is increased.
    • Finish
      85 85
The finish is medium, with a slight bitterness of dark chocolate, followed by spice, red fruit, and some grapes slowly coming out at the back.

  14. MaltMatters scored this whisky 86 points Expert Senior

Overall, the malt is deliciously interesting and, despite PX maturation, clearly brings the distillery character with it.
    • Nose
      87 87
Beautiful, balanced nose of oak, must plum, pickled raisins, blackberries and vanilla. The vanilla always floats in the background. Chocolate notes are also added.
    • Taste
      86 86
Texture is slightly oily, round and soft. Sweetness is pleasant and quickly transitions into chocolaty notes. Followed by coffee or rather mocha notes.
    • Finish
      85 85
The finish is drying, salivating and short to medium length.

So this is a beautiful amazing shot. Beautifully balanced character of the distillery and PX sherry which is not predominant. Raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, chocolate, coffee. Awesome

    (TASTED BLIND)
NOSE: Dried banana, mild vanilla, cream custard, freshly squeezed citrus rind, fresly cut lemon. Lovely. (89p).
TASTE: The arrival is fruity. Fruit also on the mid palate; dried pineapple, dried mango, cured lemon. Acidic and astringent. Spicy; oak spices, aka dried ginger, a little pepper. Turmeric and curry in the distant background (88p).
FINISH: The spices continue, as does the fruity acidity. (87-88p).
OVERALL: This is a good one but I still struggled to get my head around it. And I have no clue as to what it may be. Wonder why..? Total score 88 points.

    • Nose
      88 88
Sherry driven, with raisins and Christmas spices like cardamom. More nutty and some marzipan now. An orange twist, menthol and even spearmint. A whiff of canned apricot. Apples. Vanilla. Berries. Candy / chemical in the end.
    • Taste
      86 86
Taste profile more on the bitter side of things. More wood driven as well. Semi-oily. Bitter spices. Orange peel. Some nuttiness and eventually sour grapes.
    • Finish
      85 85
A tad sour and dry development. Semi-long finish. Cocoa powder. Bitter notes and cask influence. Bitter spices. Bitter berries after a few minutes.

    Good, balanced whisky
    • Nose
      89 89
Wine aromas, grapefruit, apple, apricot, later some raisin, light alcohol. The wood note contained is therefore well subliminal. After 15 minutes, the dark berries come through nicely, such as sour cherries or blackberries. Toasted vanilla
    • Taste
      87 87
Nice mouthfeel, creamy, light tannins, sherry and wine aromas accompany this. Well-balanced and beautifully matured.
    • Finish
      87 87
      good and medium length

  22. RJKrueger scored this whisky 89 points Expert Senior

A very balanced and interesting Bladnoch, in which the PX barrels do not push themselves too much into the foreground. Makes a lot of fun.
    • Nose
      89 89
Lemon notes, apricots, plums, marzipan and yet amazingly fresh.
    • Taste
      90 90
Fruity and distinctly sweet on the palate; with more dark fruits, spicy notes and some pepper. Nice complexity, although the PX barrel is rather reserved. With the second sip, the PX is more noticeable.
    • Finish
      88 88
Pleasant, harmonious, middle to long finish without disturbing bitterness.
