[December, 2021] I found this dram in this year's advents calendar...

...and this is another one of these modern drams that do not have very much in common with malt whisky anymore. Just pour some bottles of cheap port wine into a virgin cask and roll it a couple of times across the distillery plaza before re-racking the malt into it - and you will get this result. But as long as customers like it and pay a hell of bucks for such cheap thrills they do everything right in Scotland, or would you do things differently these days? Think twice.
    • Nose
      74 74
The colour is auburn what is very dark for a two years wine finish and which indicates that not many whisky aromas might have survived the wet cask treatment - and indeed, this nose smells just like high-spirit tannic wine and nothing else. To be honest, I prefer the nose of any good (straight) port wine over this punchy-alcoholic-woody-winey mess.
    • Taste
      70 70
The taste is sweet (cheap) port wine and bitter woods, the malt was killed instantly by these two very aggressive combatants. What else to say: "Where is the spittoon?" No, this is not drinkable to me, sorry folks. Before I flush this down the drain I added some water (out of curiosity only) but nothing changes, just the bitterness grows even stronger. The malt is dead, dead, dead!
    • Finish
      68 68
The dram arrives very hot, almost burning with a bitter-astringent mouthfeel on my palate while the coating effect is very limited. The finish is short as a lightning and adds nothing accept bitter-drying wooden impressions of the virgin cask (which was treated with port wine for just some minutes only, most probably). Booah, I do not like this at all!

The official tasting notes are pretty spot on. The cask doesn‘t overpower the spirit in my opinion, but I‘m also a Port fan.

Good, tasty, but adds nothing new and doesn't command my attention. The port finish does overwhelm the distillate.

    Cadenhead tasting notes:
    • Nose
Flat coke, brown sugar, lemon and lime.
    • Taste
      Plums, chilli chocolate, fruit cake.
    • Finish
Fizzy cola bottles, strawberry and cream sweets, blood orange.
