A 14-year-old Aberlour from the Brühl whisky house, beautifully dark golden in the glass. The color promises rich sherry aromas, but is not so dark that you have to fear syrup. So this could be a nice Speyside whisky. A 14-year-old Aberlour from the Brühl whisky house, beautifully dark golden in the glass. The color promises rich sherry aromas, but is not so dark that you have to fear syrup. So this could be a nice Speyside whisky. With its bottlings, the Brühl whisky house stands for richly finished whiskys that are bottled at cask strength, uncolored and un-chillfiltered. And the fan base is so large that they usually sell out shortly after release and then appear overpriced on the secondary market. There you should keep your hands off it, because there are always new and interesting bottlings appearing.

    • Nose
Strong on the nose with sherry tones present, not too sweet and easy to drink, but with nutty notes, dark fruits and some wood. They are strong, dark fruit tones, some with a tart component, some overripe, sweet apples. That's an interesting mix. With a little water, the fruit flavors become clearer. In the background is toasted wood.
    • Taste
Despite the 54.3% vol. the whisky runs smooth and oily on the draw, it doesn't bite and flows warm down the esophagus. Nuts and creamy chocolate on the tongue, oak in the background with some subtle 'dirt' that could come from the burnt out barrels. Not particularly complex or deep, but a nice aroma with some spiced fruit. The whisky is quite sweet, not too liquor-heavy, but remains sweet on the tongue even after swallowing. A few drops of water will do him good too.
    • Finish
The aftertaste is medium-long with wood and spices. In the end, the Aberlour remains sweet and sugary in the mouth, the nutty power of the Oloroso, which would have given the whisky a longer and deeper finish, is then missing.

A nice sherry whisky that is fun to drink. Perhaps the PX cask gave it a little too much sweetness, a slightly drier nuttiness would have done its character good. So it ends up being a little too sugary. But the ADOS whiskys are often on the sweeter side of power - but sometimes that is their problem. It's not a problem here, just a small weakness.

Had this one in a blind tasting: Liked the nose and body, some nice red fruits and sirup, quite some power. But in finish, I get this overwhelming sugar-like sweetness, which I occasionally experience with a too active PX-cask. It pulls down my score a little, but still overall it's a pleasant dram.
    • Nose
      87 87
Very fruity, red fruits, apple sirup, plums, raisins, coffee, quite some chocolate.
    • Taste
      86 86
Pretty some power, sparkling, red fruits, chocolate again. Plums, berries.
    • Finish
      84 84
Still sparkling, red fruits, but now clearly some sugar sweet notes, to much sugar experience. Drying mouthfeel, middle long finish.
