A really cool piece. After the hot nose, there is a little depth missing, which is not surprising in the case of the youth.
    • Nose
      92 92
Nougat, nutty, some furniture polish, spicy sherry, the springbank minerality slowly comes through, hot chocolate, leather, a great nose - I can't get it all broken down
    • Taste
      89 89
Citrus-heavy start, mineral, strong contrast to the nose, again a lot of chocolate, a lot of oak spice and dryness, nice and creamy at the back
    • Finish
      89 89
Chocolate without end, pleasantly spicy, wonderfully creamy, rather a short finish

Nutty toffee, forrest fruit syrup, dark chocolate, candied earth, and funky oils. Exceptional character and depth for 8 years old and such heavy sherry - like a more elegant cousin of the (also superb) Kilkerran 8 year old Oloroso cask.

One of the rare whiskies that seems to get worse with time in the glass. Liked it much better immediately after pouring, each time I tried it, especially on the nose.

Thankfully sulphur-free. Sports the savory/spicy/jammy character you's expect from such a bottling, with big notes of smoked bacon, berry jam, charbroiled meats, and tomato-based barbecue sauces. The distillate plays second fiddle, but you can still make out a tart graphite / carbolic industrial edge and a mineral / salty limestone-and-seawater touch. I'd say the SB smoke gets somewhat lost behind all that sherry.
Water brightens it up considerably and dials down the sherry (as far as that's possible here), yielding apricot and carbon paper.
    • Taste
      87 87
Needs water to become enjoyable rather than merely impressive or imposing. There's a youthful heat that's hard to tame, even with dilution, but apart from that, it's a full-on flavor attack. Simple, but delicious, with soft smoke and a big honeyed sweetness that you seldom find in SB. As for the flavors, see above: it's basically the nose on repeat, perhaps with an added juiciness.
    • Finish
      87 87
Still some heat creeping back up the old esophagus, but also immaculate, unassailable flavors that reflect the distinctive distillate and the fresh sherry hoggies in equal measure. A big barbecue feel here as well. Pretty long, due to the smoke. With water, you get a bit closer to the distillate, which I'd recommend.

A young jumping bench as one can hope for. It combines the typical distillery character with youthful strength and adds a fine nutty note. The PLV is now absurd.

Another great SB, with leather, damp soil and light peat, not too sweet, peppery, complex. Syrupy, toffee, some boiled fruit. Elegant & Lovely!

Very nice nose, for me too much wood in the taste to score it higher and a very good finish. I like the sample I got from a friend but to buy it myself it became to expensive.

Such a shame people are dumping this trying to make a profit. Genuinely irritated for all the people like myself just trying to buy a bottle but cant because of these people

Nose: whiff of peat, varnish, Jamaican ginger cake, herbal, sandalwood, the ethanol is quite prominent on the nostrils

Mouth: hot and thick, more ginger cake and varnish, slight acrid note a little like burnt plastic.

This is hot without water and pretty blunt really, the distillate has been blasted to hell.

Water softens it and dissipates the acrid note and releases a lot more fruity notes. Transformative!

To conclude: without water I don’t like this, with water it’s ok, tolerable with some redeeming features. A plea to Mitchell’s…no more first fill sherry or bonkers sherry finishes. You’ve beaten us to death with a sherry drenched stave.

This whisky was sold for 55£ in June 2021 by a ballot for Springbank Society members.

  23. zurbaran scored this whisky 89 points Member Senior

A beautiful, flawless, so to speak modern and still quite young Oloroso sherry bottling. Cinnamon orange marzipan, plum compote with rum, brown sugar, salty caramel. The Campbeltown character is still clearly recognizable. Very tasty, but also a bit young and impetuous. No sulfur. Well done but not a 90+ whisky.
I don't want to comment on the fact that a society bottle that is explicitly bottled for fans and sold individually via an elaborate lottery procedure is offered several times at a multiple issue price.
