Quite fruity on the nose with BBQ smoke, then rather strong spiciness in the taste, which reveals more fruit on the second sip.
    Succeded.
    [86 - 82 = good whisky -> get (second) bottle? Maybe...]
    • Nose
      86 86
initially light smoke from BBQ (umami), which then becomes stronger over time; partly also salty-maritime.
Behind it red-fruity, light berry aroma, which also has a slight acidity.
With fresh apples, pears and apricots. Over time I still hear a hay / straw aroma far in the background, but noticeable to me.
Indefinable herbs and spices, but somehow goes well with this malt.
    • Taste
      85 85
especially light, then chilli-peppery heat on the tongue, but goes by again quickly.
Fruity, spicy, slightly tart notes of dark chocolate.
Second sip: softer, more pleasant; much more fruit and also the red fruits come through well. The smoke is now less likely to be felt.
    • Finish
      84 84
Medium long (up to long for the smoke component). Seasoning and spices as well as herbs stick together with tannins well on the tongue.
The dark chocolate gets its own moment again, but then fades noticeably.
The smoke reappears when you exhale through your nose.

2021 is No. 318 appeared in the Small Batch series. Lightly peated whisky from 1st fill Oloroso butts and bourbon barrels was used here. Unfortunately there is no information about the age. The strange numbers of the small batch releases refer to the location of the kegs in the warehouses.

    • Nose
The smoke is only very faint in the nosing, but it gives the whole thing a slightly more complex aspect. The young notes are still dominant. And in the background is the lactic acid again.
    • Taste
In the taste, the smoky note is very pretty, but fruity additions are missing. There is a syrupy sweetness in the foreground that is offset quite well by the smoke. But then a bitterness is felt again.
    • Finish
In the finish, the smoke alone leaves a little more substance.

There are a few deeper aromas due to the Oloroso, it also has some wood - but overall it is still too young and not mature. Wolfburn is a distillery that I would like to like, unfortunately the whiskys featured at Wolfburn Week didn't justify it. This is a pity …

Wolfburn is definitely on the right track. Lots of light, but also some shadows at the end.
    • Nose
      86 86
Interesting nose, light fruit notes, apple, pears, plums, vanilla and some marzipan, mixed with light smoky notes.
    • Taste
      85 85
On the palate, in addition to the fresh, sweet fruit notes, spicy malt and sherry notes are noticeable, then a youthful peppery spiciness sets in. Towards the end, some tart bitter notes emerge. The smoke is more restrained in taste.
    • Finish
      82 82
Spicy, slightly bitter notes also dominate the finish, which then becomes somewhat soapy and stale. It's a pity, the departure pulls my rating down a bit. The smoke is more present again.

Starts surprisingly sweet and fruity with red apples, berry compote and sweet pears. Salt, ash, gentle peat smoke and lime slowly follow. Old rubber boat?
Becomes tart and smoky over time, with the more gummy bear-like fruity notes fading into the background.
    • Taste
      82 82
Starts again fruity and quite apple-toned, but this time accompanied by a fine chilli spice. Then develops more and more gentle peat smoke, metallic accents, lime, ash. Later also earthy tones as well as oak and roasted hazelnuts. In the background also quite sweet gummy bear-like hints.
    • Finish
      84 84
Medium length and nicely balanced. Nutty sherry sweetness, Fernet, dried fruit and smooth smoke.

    • Nose
Apple from the barbeque, apricot jam, a hint of hay.
    • Taste
Peppery. Nice combination of fruit (pear, apricot) and soft smoke. Gets tastier with the sip. Bit thin at 46%.

Nothing special and quite interchangeable. Smoke initially covers a lot, but then appears better integrated. Behind it some fruit, pear and oak spice. Default.
