Excellent whisky among the range of the Penderyn Gold Series. Rich Oak 46% is one of the newest bottlings to join the Gold Series. It used to be a small batch 50% bottling but the distillery decided to add it as a 46% bottling for its Gold Series.

Excellent value for a rich whisky full of flavours. You get chocolate, dried fruits, coconut and a hint of vanilla in this beautiful dram.

Clearly very young - Penderyn haven't managed to hide that.
    • Nose
Fortified wine - reminiscent of un-aged brandy. Some malt. Vanilla.
    • Taste
      More fortified wine.
    • Finish
Very short. Wine and vanilla. Malt.

My first malt is from Wales. Pleasant aroma, light, wine barrel gives berry notes. But heavily hardened, the tree protrudes, which did not like. In general, a good molt, so to speak, there is potential))

The wine finish is quite evident - more like a fortified wine in some ways, but a decent sipper.

      Woody, vanilla & pear drops.
    • Taste
      80 80
Initially tastes more like a glass of wine, then the alcohol comes in, slightly drying note at the end.
    • Finish
      80 80
Medium - the wine notes keep popping up.

A little closed and rather difficult. On the one hand strong oak and pithy spices, on the other hand vanilla, caramel, juicy red berries and roasted nuts. With water: fresher and much more lively. Mint, then lots of caramel, pithy spices and again hints of red berries.
    • Taste
      82 82
Very creamy and full. At first it becomes very sweet and caramel, but later it becomes dry and spicy after pepper and allspice. In the background hints of cranberries. With water: juicier and more balanced. Oak, berry notes, chocolate, caramel, orange zest and pithy spices.
    • Finish
      80 80
      Long, very dry and calibrated

Really disappointing as a previous 50% expression under the late Jim Swann was probably one of my favourite whiskies ever. I've been told that Penderyn, like Kavalan have a new source for their wine casks which could be the reason for the change in taste.

    Nose: floral, vanilla, laundry detergent
Palate: icing sugar and a hint of spice, a bit watery.
Finish: black pepper with a slight heat

I can admire the amount of flavour that was infused in a short time, yet it’s a shame that I can’t reality get beyond the overt wood flavours (vanilla, I’m looking at you).
    • Nose
Big on the vanilla (it’s a bomb), caramel and fudge, with hints of freshly cut grass, some drops of mango juice. Very modern and very much wood driven.
    • Taste
Fairly fruity. The mango certainly makes an encore, as does the fudge. There’s room for some cloves and nutmeg too. Also, there’s no escaping the vanilla, although the balance is better than it is on the nose.
    • Finish
Lingering vanilla custard. Short to medium.

    Penderyn Rich Oak 46%.

30ml sample at home July 2022 after a day at St Margaret’s Fair.

Mid-tone yellow with a faint orange hue.

Aroma of highlighter pen, green apple sherbet, a musty old oak note, mostly permanent marker and tangy apple.

Body is watery to lightly oily.

Taste is soft on impact with some prickly salt and white pepper. Very easy, clean and straight-forward. I wouldn’t say the oak is as rich or predominant as the name suggests. The oak is nicely balanced, not bitter or tannic or charred.

Solidly made. It’s not going to rock your world but it’s a very enjoyable 'start of the evening' winding-down whisky. Certainly more armchair than hipflask. One of the better Penderyn offerings I've tried of late. 3.5/84

Light fruity, sweet, apple, herbs, toffee

Spicy, honey, only a little fruit, great wood spice

    Medium length, sweet, spicy

    Tendency towards 85

C: ‘Rich Oak’,… as opposed to poor oak? I rather liked this back in 2016 [score: 82], offering the headline ‘a fun one’. Today, this is the best of the three. Same score too, some six years later.

Penderyn Gold Range Rich Oak, 46% alc. Original bottling. Expansion: Bourbon casks, post-aging in European wine casks

Nose: Muesli with honey and pieces of dried apple, behind which the apples become fresher and crunchier, pears and grapes join them. Some fudge and marzipan follow, a hint of peppermint. However, the fruit aromas clearly dominate.
Palate: Very fruity and thick, quite sweet. A large amount of vanilla fudge, some nougat and caramel, light milk chocolate. Also currants, dried raspberries and sugared grapes. There are also spices here, I find nutmeg and cinnamon, a hint of cloves.

Finish: Medium length, vanilla fudge, pepper and some cinnamon. The oak comes out much more strongly here, the spice aromas are remembered longer.

Conclusion: This Penderyn retains its distillery character, the post-ripening brings spice and grape aromas. The result is already successful, an extremely drinkable single malt. 82/100 points (2022)

    • Nose
Vanilla, apple, slightly artificial, then a little caramel
    • Taste
Sweet, slightly spicy, caramel, vanilla, toast, apple, nutty
    • Finish
Moderate. A hint of solvents, coconut, at the end very slightly bitter

Tropical and orchard fruit, vanilla taffy, fruit gems, honey and cinnamon with a touch of oak.

This is a lovely aroma that comes through soft but heavy.

Exact carbon copy, but a tad richer and deeper.

I’m enjoying the overall profile of the Penderyn Rich Oak Single Malt. It’s warm, bold and expressive. It’s awesome.

Medium -> Tropical fruit candy, vanilla taffy and some malty sweetness dissolve to turn a tad metallic and oaky.
