Caol lla is probably the most fruity islay malt out there.
    • Nose
Oh that’s a nice nose. Very fruity with loads of sweet fruits and some mildly sour ones. Sweet apples, peach, lime and fresh oak. The peat is there but it’s very complimentary and at the background. I wouldn’t say this is just 10yo, considering the nose. The peat gives ashes, like in ash trays and smoked (warm) red apples. I wouldn’t recommend adding to much water. The nose tends to implode a bit because of it.
    • Taste
Subtle, sweet and again fruity. It appears to be accessible but in a good way. Rather smooth with flavors like in sawdust/wood shavings. Smoked fruits mainly. Water releases more orange fruits like orange and tangerines. Also the peach comes back again. It adds honey as well. Again the peat is complimenting, not taking over.
    • Finish
Medium length. Smoked ham, smoked apple, smoked pear. In the finish the smoke/peat really takes over. It’s like a blanket of ashes is laying over it. I tend to like it!

This finally is a well deserving whisky in the second batch of this WIN art collection. This is something I could recommend buying. It’s not overly complex or with a lot of depth but it offers quite a bit of pleasure.

Nice straight Caol Ila, with the peat being not too prominent, especially the nose has more fruitiness to offer. In taste more smoke, but still room for sweet- and fruitiness. Pleasant dram.

Quite alcoholic, punching. Very light and fruity, citrus, pushing the peat more to the background. Later on some more woodsmoke and ash. Then ripe apples, and a sour touch. Pretty versatile.

Sal ammoniac, licorice, fruity, citrus, sweet smoke. Then some caramel as well. Pretty smooth now, which is surprising after a punchy nose.
    • Finish
      85 85
Still smooth, juat a little sparkle. Sweet smoke, some citrus fruits, some vanilla and caramel. Ashy, middle long finish, a bit drying mouthfeel.

Quite a raw and uncompromising Caol Ila which (undiluted) carries an impressive punch. A classic Islay, but not for beginners. It can do with a drop of water, and is then vaguely reminiscent of the Caol Ila 1982 that WIN once bottled, with a load of green apples. A pleasant dram for a long evening.

"It's phenolic and distinctly Islay without been too aggressively so. But it's still got the power, still got the peat punch going on."

Decent Caol Ila, though way too dry and ashy in the finish.
    • Nose
      86 86
Bonfire smoke on a hot beach, earthy peat, some mild mustard and piccalilly, mashed potatoes, salty, some lemony citrus and a musty nuttiness.
    • Taste
      85 85
Greasy smoke, quite a fat and oily mouth feel, lots of black pepper, mashed potato , piccalilly, mild general sweetness and some lemon like fruit notes at the back.
    • Finish
      81 81
Long: some sweet and slightly honied liquorice, a stingy alcoholic pepperiness, heavy on dry charcoal and ash notes.
