Third one of the second batch of 2021 WIN bottlings I tasted and the third dissapointment. It just might be the pointless finishing here... Not that it's undrinkable, but it's nowhere near the quality I'd expect from an 85 - 90 euro whisky.

Floral and slightly volatile smells, dried fruits with a mild sourness from the port cask. Some dried apricot, lychee, sour berries, lime juice, pickles and model kit glue.
    • Taste
      81 81
Not sure about this. It's sour, quite sharp, a bit stale and only mildly fruity on sour berries and bitter citrus. More and more pepperiness comes to the front. The alcohol builds up on the tongue to the point where it becomes unpleasant. Eventually it's quite a hot and sharp experience.
    • Finish
      79 79
Medium length: watery sour wine notes combined with bitter liquorice and ending on a hot wood spiciness.

For me a disappointment. Few flavors to discover. Even if you allow it plenty of time in the glass before sipping. Adding water does hardly make a difference.

  4. Cask1988 did not rate this whisky Connoisseur

The color gives away the use of port casks instantly. This batch of WIN is a big disappointment so far. This is the final sample of the complete batch and I’m holding by breath for it… (although that makes nosing quite hard lol)
    • Nose
Well..it’s a grain on light port steroids. But I can’t say I’m impressed. It’s loaded with simple grain flavors like vanilla, some orchard fruit and quite some butter. It appears to be tart and a bit moldy on the nose. Water adds some sweetness and fruitcake but that’s about it.
    • Taste
This soft, gentle, sweet and fatty. On the palate I’m overloaded with buttery flavors. Again loads of simple grain flavors and somewhere in the far background some port cask sweetness that gives me some plumbs and raisins mainly. Fair enough, tastewise the alcohol integrated very well. I wouldn’t have guessed it to be almost 58% ABV. That’s a positive. At the same time it acts quite dry and tannic. The oak overshot a bit. Water gives a try in reinstating the balance but it’s not good enough. It does bring out more sweet red fruits. That’s a positive. Still it remains tart.
    • Finish
The finish is a continuation of the above. Lots of oak, vanilla and again butter. Water makes the finish fall apart. It’s getting completely focused on try oak flavors and pulls away my mouth.

It appears young and with a lack of character. It seems to me this has been ‘matured’ on a completely dead refill cask for most of its time 19-19,5 years is my guess, before it was offered a quick 6 month finish on a port cask to try to add some taste. But the buttery and dry character tells me more then enough. This has been way to long sitting down on a cask doing nothing.
I seriously got the feeling that this just has been dumped at the retailers and costumers. WIN seems to have moved their ‘problem’ away from themselves onto the next one in the chain of logistics. It’s completely rubbish and I seriously don’t get why this has been bottled. I cannot believe the ones responsible for this bottling were seriously convinced that they were bottling a great whisky.

Pretty okay dram, although I expected more of a 20+ yo grain, it misses quite some depth. Some sweetness, strawberry, but furthermore not too much to discover.
    • Nose

Sweet and fruity, strawberry, some vanilla, quite smooth and friendly.
    • Taste
      84 84
Quite some power, pepper, sweet and fruity. Vanilla, strawberry, a bit oily, not very complex.
    • Finish
      83 83
Still some power, sweetness, vanilla, strawberry, middle long, pretty drying mouthfeel. A bit oily.

Again another rarity in this series and not in a good way.
    Port dundas unworthy.

why the hell would you finish a dundas on a ruby port?
just leave it another 10 years in the original cask or pour it in another cask for an extra 10 years.. a short finish Ruby port doesnt do it any good..
