Great idea on paper, a bit flat and uninspiring on the palate.

Glenfarclas 185th gave me a classic sherry. The obvious raisin chocolate, rich fruit, cream honey cake and the oak flavor at the end make the taste very full and soft, and the complexity is also very high. It will be more reflected in the taste gradually. The overall let me feel the texture brought by the high-quality original whisky ! Great ! It's worth collecting!

rich raisins with yellow jam, cookies with cream flavor, and a little spice with orange peel.

long, rich red fruit with spice flavor, honey sweet, slight mint flavor, followed by oak aroma.

    Glenfarclas 185th Anniversary SSMSW 46%.

    30ml sample, Aug 2022.

    A light shade of amber.

Aroma has some ginger sweets and mince pie, raisin, but not super dense or rich - it’s an airier impression than that. Trifle, boozed up with a sprig of mint and a little digestive biscuit crumble. Trail mix. Over time, the slightest playdoh.

    Body is rounded, lightly oily.

The first thing you notice on the palate is how soft this is, no alcohol sharpness at all. Lots of warming salty spirit on the swallow but that initial impression in the mouth is of creamy soft spirit, with soft sherry cask influences suggesting raisin, dense fruited cake, maybe fig. Those vibes intensify and sweeten a bit over time but never take over.

Very nicely balanced. It doesn’t shout "sherry cask" in your face, which is my strong preference. Really well put together. Complex with nice interplay between the different casks and the spirit character.

Not a life-changing dram, if such a thing exists, but a fittingly good one for an anniversary celebration release. £120 is quite an outlay and I’ve paid less for similar drams, but you could do a lot worse at the price too, especially these days! 3.725/89

This is a contemplative whisky. One to savor slowly, letting its flavors slowly reveal themselves: peaches and cream laced with smoked chili peppers, apples (green, yellow, and red), turmeric, soy sauce, a cinnamon stick in semi-over-steep black tea, some wet oak, malt, walnuts, Christmas cake, and high quality rich mocha with whipped cream.

89/100 from a freshly cracked neck pour. If I notice improvement (such as if the balance and alcohol integration were tweaked a smidge), I'll adjust my score. Either way, this is a great buy and a hearty recommendation.

    A wonderful Glenfarclas.
    • Nose
Complex nose. Age, but also youth. Mint and herbal notes along with aged sherry, red fruit, dark honey, sugar, bourbon, and gentle oak spice.
    • Taste
Sweet and smooth arrival. Sweet oak spice, red fruits in dark honey, herbs, mint. Definitely taste the age, but it's quite well integrated. Great palate.
    • Finish
Long, with emerging spice, mint, red fruit, lingering honey, and oak.

Great release. On the nose chocolate, sherry, barrels. Develops in the glass to caramel and honey with blueberries. The taste is also sherry-wine, the influence of several old barrels immediately manifests itself. The finish holds the mark, medium long in the direction of chocolate and caramel with a transition to dense citrus fruits. Definitely worth a try.

Juicy cranberries, table grapes, plums, raspberries. Chocolate covered raspberries. Wine gums. Oranges, and also dried mandarin peels. A sort of mojito sense. Some chewing tobacco - that is, juicy - a bit of cedar or juniper and leather, a little bit of varnish. There is a co-existence of old and dusty and fresh and juicy Old pleasant oak and sherry and prune, dust and dunnage. But also fresh cranberry juice and fresh berries and currants. There is also some perfume or potpurri, some wool carpet cleaner. As it opens, some savory herbs, soy sauce, a bit of licorice, still juicy - jammy blackberries. With water: Fresh plums, jammy plums, mint, complex fruit juices, fruit jellos, caramel, anise, light mints. I find bergamot and mountain mints on my last tasting.
    • Taste
      89 89
Full, sweet, sherry profile: leather, coffee, syrupy. Fruity, tangy, full. A little bit of bitter chocolate, herbaceous, leather and polish. With water: fuller, leather and raspberry syrup. Some pebbles and rock dust

      too.

Syrupy, roasted nuts, caramels. A bit wooden, a touch of bitterness. On some tastings a bit dry and verging leafy. Some chocolate covered nuts, pebbly. With water, milder, juicier, nuttier

Personally the best whisky i tried this year and for a long time. Everything is perfect, fruit, spice and malt form a really balanced malt with a neverending finish. The aftertaste is already worth the price tag. I cannot remember a malt where i had to pour a few more drams indifferent what was open in my bar.

Honestly i think this is a vast improvement over the family casks of the last two batches! If someone would ask me how glenfarclas tastes i would say grab that bottling.
I ordered another three bottles just in case i get tired of all the new too young bottlings with wet finishes.

  18. thijs100 scored this whisky 89 points Connoisseur

Really good and with a flavour profile that showcases the casks from the earlier decades.
    • Nose
Waxy, honeyed and fruity with elements of mango, plums and yellow peaches. There are hints of sultanas too, as well as some fruity tea, sweet porridge, a whiff of mint and sprinkles of cinnamon. Showing its age in the best possible way. Not too dissimilar from some of those early 1990s undisclosed Speysiders.
    • Taste
Creamy mouthfeel with soft spices and a few light tannins, quickly followed by plums, honey, orange zest and cotton candy grapes, but also a whiff of pink grapefruit. Some slight herbal touches, vanilla custard and cloves as well.
    • Finish
Lingering notes of pollen, a hint of milk chocolate and some aniseed. Short to medium in length.

Update: After the bottle is half empty I have to increase the points from 89 to 91. Wow - this has gotten better over time and is great now.
As with almost all Glenfarclas, the price-performance ratio is at least very good, if not unbeatable.

In a blind tasting I would have estimated him to be around 18-22 years and 48% after standing for 20 minutes. The Glenfarclas profile is clearly visible.
    • Nose
      91 91
I'm surprised to find so many notes of graceful old whiskys here. The whole profile is very well balanced, the clear sherry notes are rather light and at the beginning of the fruity variety, after 10 minutes there are subtle and beautiful tones of furniture polish, leather, oak and also some vanilla.

Oh, over time it gets a little older and a little darker too, Demerara sugar is coming - the change from light to dark is really great for such a cheap whisky.
    • Taste
      91 91
The start is already strong and powerful, again fruity wood, light sherry sweetness and at the same time the dark sherry tones with a spicier share than the nose. The second sip is much clearer and milder, here the second half of the nosing is more in the foreground.

It's not slack at all and is also beautifully round and balanced. But I like the nosing even better.
He tolerates water and is even a bit better in the tasting.
    • Finish
      90 90
The finish is rather dry and slightly spicy, medium to almost long, but not particularly intense (which I couldn't expect based on the overall impression).

...a very complex, convincing single malt - very harmoniously balanced, not a "sherry monster" that suppresses other aromas - and - even without an indication of age, it shows maturity in many nuances...

    • Nose
      full aromas, raisins, peach, spices (clearly cinnamon), almonds, spicy, woody;
    • Taste

    • Finish

Incredibly complex and nuanced, easily one of the favourites from 2021. Has a fairly narrow goldielocks zone once open, I suspect the older constituents start to ‘collapse’ with oxygen and the palate and finish develop a bitter woodiness.

What a worthy bottling for an anniversary celebration!
    • Nose
      91 91
Sits heavy in the glass in terms of smell, but manages to fill the room somehow. Sloooow legs. Old wood, red and yellow fruits, sweet notes, herbs. Raspberry jam and ripe blackcurrants. Mezcal-like fresh citric herbal notes: orange and grapefruit peel, wintergreen, mint and clary sage. Vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg and clove bring the spice. Fruity notes of raisins, morello cherry, blackcurrant liqueur. Dry tobacco. Interestingly, I also detect notes of frangipani-like white florals, on the sweeter rather than indolic side. Honey as well.
    • Taste
      90 90
Fresh-herbal, bitter and fruity, quite dry and old. Nice maltiness as well. Cherry, blackcurrant, orange marmalade, tobacco. Fresh herbal notes of thyme and mint. Dark chocolate and soft vanilla. I suspect you can find anything in here if you put your mind to it, it’s that complex.
    • Finish
      90 90
Medium to long and dry. Tobacco leaves, wood, remnants of the black forest fruit, the herbal freshness is there as well. With water, long cigar ash finish, dry tobacco.

A bit unusual for a Glenfarclas, but there are also some trademarks. Floral and herbal-spicy, menthol. Nuts, aged sherry, nougat. toffee and raisins. Orange. leather polish. Very complex and the longer it is in the glass, the more flavors you discover.

    • Nose
Very lightly sherried and balanced. Malty, mineral, but fruity as well. It has to open up a lot.
    • Taste
Right on the first contact it obviously has some old stuff in the vatting. Even if it's a very small percentage, it's embedded into the profile. The smell does not give it away definitively, but the taste does for sure.
    • Finish
Although the finish is in the mid range, there are no flaws in it, and leaves a very pleasant finish (mostly toasted mashmallows and wood, with some fizzy and crispy minerality) of a very well aged spirit.

Typical Oloroso Sherry Malt. Chocolate, dark fruity, pleasantly mild oak. In the beginning, the Oloroso furiness even comes through, which could indicate a slightly older age. It is also pleasantly full in structure and not watery. Great, but not really outstanding.

    COLOUR: light amber

    - a very intense angular Glenfarclas,
    - quite dry and with a lot of spice
    - interesting story with the 6 decades, but tastes good
not as good as the comparable priced 25 J. from the
    standard range
    - but fully on par with the Christmas Edition
    1991 / 2015 (23 years)
    - PLV: at €120 it's quite a high price, ok
is a special edition, but for the taste
    a bit over the limit
    • Nose
fruity, spicy first impression, spices in the background, pleasant dry sherry aromas
    • Taste
strong, intense attack with lots of oak and a lot of spice, very strong, for the 46% still very strong (almost even stronger), dry sherry aroma clearly noticeable, stays in the mouth for a long time
    • Finish
      long dry finish ;
Long, tart, very spicy aftertaste, felt more spice than sherry flavors remain in the aftertaste

Soft on the nose, subtle caramel, candied apple, rosemary, raisin, dried berries, orange zest, floral, unripe peach. On the palate it is tangy and sour with some salinity and minerality. On the finish a bright espresso note, orange zest, peppery, herbal and a pleasant bitter oak note lingers.

Great, tasty malt. Everything looks very harmonious and round. For me a well-made sherry malt. No more and no less. But then it is somehow interchangeable and at the price only a NAS.
    • Nose
      87 87
Soft, gentle, toffee, caramel, honey, nuts, fruit aromas of apricots, oranges, cherries. That has to be sorted first. Fresh herbs and chocolate are mixed in. A certain maltiness with grain surrounds the whole thing. Spices like cinnamon and gingerbread with a few wood aromas are added in the background.
    • Taste
      87 87
The first impression is very chocolatey and nutty. A couple of fresh, honey-sweet fruits like raspberries, cherries and oranges create a nice mixture with spicy, sometimes bitter almonds. Orange biscuit, vanilla pudding and a little cinnamon add a light, soft creaminess. There is also something like a slightly tart balsamic vinegar. Could also be lemon peel.

What a beautiful whisky - blind I would've never guessed this was Glenfarclas or that there were any sherry casks involved. I would've guessed this to be a 25+ year old refill bourbon matured Speysider (and I absolutely love those type of whiskies).

It evolves beautifully in the glass and you can really tell older casks were used to make this.

A beautiful dram, well composed by the guys at Glenfarclas!

Aroma: medium intensity, sweet and confectionery spectrum, caramel, sprinkled bun, vanilla. The second layer of dried fruit tones - raisins, dates, honey, sweet-herbaceous shades, something like a healing potion, light woody-nutty tones.

Taste: delicate, tingling spices, caramel, slightly bitter herbal tea, wood is already much more powerful than in the aroma, tangibly astringent, varnish, black coffee, eucalyptus.

Finish: longer than average, wood, caramel, black coffee, light tones of dried fruits, fading honey. The pleasant, delicate woody sillage lasts for a long time.

    Score: 88

Bottom line: an elegant whisky that grows from aroma to finish, if you can present what you would like brighter to the aroma, then the long finish compensates for everything and in general everything looks organic.
Expectations were for a certain sherry bias of this whisky, but as it turned out not, apparently those sherry barrels were not of the second or even third filling, but a respectable age and elegance can be traced at all stages.

The Gf 185 is characterized by its balanced, complex interplay of aromas. Despite its complexity, it is always pleasant to drink. It's heavy and oily on the tongue, which comes from the older barrels.
    • Nose
      87 87
On the nose you have ripe, light fruits, honey sweetness, lemon zest, vanilla. The spiciness of the wood notes is always present.
    • Taste
      89 89
A fine play of the different aromas that you already had in your nose alternate again and again. The whisky looks very round and dangerously drinkable. At first I had apricot notes, hints of coffee, vanilla and the spiciness of the wood. It was followed by notes of malt. Hazelnuts and pepper complement the interplay. The malt is pleasantly warming and, in my opinion, the alcohol content is perfectly selected.
    • Finish
      88 88
The finish is medium to long. What remains are dried apricots and the taste of unroasted walnuts, the skin of which has slight bitterness.

Nose: nutty roasted aromas (hazelnut), oranges, red apples, milk chocolate, brown sugar with cinnamon, a few dates, some forest soil

Palate: hazelnut, milk chocolate, oranges, red apples, brown sugar with cinnamon, a few dates, unfortunately a bit watery

Finish: medium to long, warm, oranges with cinnamon and milk chocolate

Rating: nice thing, I think it's really well done: nutty roasted aromas, oranges, milk chocolate and brown sugar with cinnamon; no sherry board, but an interesting game of flavors. But I think 120 euros for NAS and 46% is very excessive ...

Nose: if you’ve tried Glenfarclas from the 1970s (especially refill wood) then this will be familiar. Stewed plums and nectarines, as well as waxed oranges, pink grapefruits and hints of pollen. Hints of dried mango and golden raisins. Light touches of dried herbs and subtle rose petals. Dusty books. Mint tea as well. Pretty gorgeous: really vibrant and fresh, and unmistakably well-aged.

Mouth: richer now, slightly spicier and not as light as the ABV suggests. It’s close to some of these undisclosed Speyside malts of late – still hardly any young notes. Oranges, damsons, stewed berries, even a hint of passion fruit. Hints of herbal tea, candied ginger, cinnamon and a little furniture wax. Now more nutty hints and a wee touch of chocolate as well.

Finish: not very long, but enjoyable, with some mint, apple, old wood and cocoa.

Glenfarclas hardly disappoints if you like a bolder distillate. Still I wonder about the choice of casks in this vatting. Where it should be a special moment (to celebrate the 185th annisversary) I find it a bit "modernistic" as it is fairly on the spicy/tannic side. Especially the taste is not that gentle in my opinion. The nose is great as always, just as is the finish.

If you're into some spice taste in your drams, than be quick to get a bottle before it's gone.
    • Nose
      88 88
Typical Glenfarclas style nose, which is fairly nutty, malty with sufficient toffee and wood. Ginger bread, almond, fudge, honey, leather, tangerine, oloroso sherry and moist wood. It's all delicate but harmonious.
    • Taste
      82 82
The taste is a bit flat and on the spicy/tannic side (ginger, grape pip) compared with the nose. It gives also a more citric expression, on seville orange zest. Behind that, there is bitter cocoa and cinnamon stick, dried fruit and walnut.
    • Finish
      85 85
The finish is moderately long, leaving a bittersweet note of orange/chocolate bonbon, almond again, even a faint whiff of char or smoke, a little balsamic vinegar, toffee, earth, wood, pepper and ginger bread.

First, an unusual nose. Very different from modern piglets. Much more herbs, acid and something meaty. At first I thought of a Mortlach from the PX Cask.
But then he opens. Much more fruit. Then floral again. Later fruit cake. Pastries. Changes again. Exciting
    • Taste
      87 87
A lot more Farclas immediately on the tongue. Raspberry, cherry on the front, then typically dark chocolate and nutty. Here, too, it turns into a second sip. More plum, more spice.
    • Finish
      91 91
Finish in the first attempt again herbaceous and, typical for piglets, slightly bitter (but less than the 25yo), and very balanced. It takes a long time to turn back to fruit. With the second sip even longer on berries and pudding.

There, it’s even better than 10 years ago. It’s great how they manage to let the older whisky speak and keep the younger casks at a distance. A great refill-ish profile at an easy-going strength and with a very fair price! Highly recommended. https://www.whiskynotes.be/2021/glenfarclas/glenfarclas-185th-anniversary/

Color: relatively light. Appears much darker in the photo than in reality.

Scent: restrained, sweet, light fruit (orange).

Taste: nice sweetness (demerara sugar), very light cardboard, oily, harmonious, hardly any sherry aromas, alcohol not completely integrated. No interesting taste development can be determined. Overall, the flavor intensity is too low and it is a rather insignificant whisky. Therefore I cannot give a buy recommendation, although this bottling is still slightly better than the one for the 175th anniversary (WID: 20657)

[July, 2021] I liked the Glenfarclas 175th Anniversary edition very much (WB id 20657) because its composition of different vintage casks delivered an unbelievable erotic moment to my taste buds (if such a thing is possible with a spirit). So I have high expectations on the 185th Anniversary bottling...

...and again well done, George and the team at Glenfarclas! If you like delicate, complex and charming drams with a slight bias towards the bitter-herbal-spicy side this one is for you. All is perfect and even the price of around 109 bucks is absolutely okay for a dram of such a quality.

Again, this is not a dram to be tasted when in a rush or using a small sample size only. To really enjoy the different impressions I suggest to have at least 5cl over an hour of tasting time (at least).
    • Nose
      90 90
The colour is deep gold and the nose offers a fantastic fresh and complex profile again, which is the result of marrying very old, medium aged and young casks together with every age contributing the best it can offer. Not a single flaw, off-note or imbalance that I can find and certainly they checked all casks to be not spoiled by a sulphurous treatment. This is a delicate nose with fine bourbon and sherry casks aromas completing the excellent 'farclas spirits profile. If you are looking for quick and powerful impressions you will be disappointed because there are none, this nose shines through its subtleness and vast variety of different aromas. I like it very much! It nicely opens up upon oxidation and offers even more aromas after 20-30 minutes of breathing time, so take your time with this dram.
    • Taste
      91 91
The taste is of equal quality with all flavours delicate and perfectly balanced. It leans a little to the spicy - herbal side which is something I like, but it misses the "sexiness" of the 175th edition (no erotic moment according to my taste buds here, sadly). But I never found another "erotic" dram so far anyway. This taste is both interesting to explore (because of its many different impressions) and dangerously quaffable to sip. Water is not needed but does no harm either.
    • Finish
      91 91
The initial mouthfeel is warming, peppery and coating with some bitter impressions of spices and wood which are tasty in this setting and not distracting at all. The finish is long and adds more of the bitter herbal-wooden flavours without loosing the balance, obviously they used much more European oak casks in this batch than with the 175th edition. The sweet malt and sherry impressions keep the wood under control until the very end, and again there are no distracting drying or astringent moments at all. A perfect casks selection, indeed.

This was a fascinating dram, rather unique, definitely something I’ve never had before. This is what using casks from 6 different decades must taste like. It goes beyond the standard Glenfarclas standard bottle flavor profile into new territory (for me). It’s much bolder than a typical Speyside. There are elements that remind me of something from Islay’s Bunnahabhain, some Bruichladdich, some Campbeltown coastal salinity from Glen Scotia, but then there’s still this undertone that reminds you of Glenfarclas in some of the layers.

What a nice way to celebrate 185 years. Happy Anniversary, Glenfarclas!

Stone fruits, Maritime salinity, walking along the coast, ocean waves crashing against the shore, reminds me of Bunnahabhain 18’s deep coastal salinity. There’s some sweet-tart that evokes passion fruit. Ginger, salted toffee, then old furniture, dark chocolate bitterness, drying effect, like oversteeped tea.

A great surprise for the anniversary and a good idea to create a very atypical bottling for it and to set off for new shores.
But be careful: the classic Glenfarclas sherry flavors of the standard bottlings are only found here in nuances.
    • Nose

The alcohol is very nicely integrated. Significantly less sherry influence than expected. Sweet and slightly herbal aromas flow from the glass. But also very nice fresh notes.
Sour apple rings, herbal tea, vanilla, fresh black pepper, honey, a hint of lemon balm, orange zest, caramel, fine oak spice.

Fresh juice oranges, spicy wood aromas, dried apricots, dried blood orange, dark chocolate, liquorice, some aniseed, papaya.

An unusual Glenfarclas! Extremely heavy on herbs and spices with spicy wood tones, muted fruit notes and a fresh aftertaste. The hazelnuts already mentioned remain persistent and often show themselves in the taste and aftertaste. For me, this extremely spice-heavy anniversary bottling is a welcome change from the otherwise often fruity or wood-heavy Family Casks. Tastes and I like it very much!
    • Nose
Light amber shimmers in the glass, an oily streak sticks to the glass wall of my Premium Snifter from which occasionally long and syrupy "legs" loosen. Roasted hazelnuts combine with raisins and dried berries, caramelized sugar is mixed with semi-dark chocolate and a pinch of cinnamon, abrasion from old orange peel plays with hints of grapefruit and a hint of spicy wood. Apricots and peaches, a delicate scent of fresh mint and wet meadow herbs, a few drops of cold coffee and again whale and hazelnuts, in the background are old toffee and a steamed mixture of spices.
    • Taste
The first sip flows spicy over the tongue, hints of dark chocolate, mixed with fresh sawdust and old dry wood. Dark fruit notes, dried fruits, caramel and toffee, milk chocolate and an increasingly dominant spice note. Tart wood tones play with dried fruit, meadow herbs and spices, in the background there is a minimal note of smoke and peppermint.
    • Finish
Peeled hazelnuts stick to the palate, spicy wooden elements ensnare meadow herbs and spices, apricots and a touch of grapefruit slowly announce the end of the aftertaste ...
